History
• 1939 : One of the earliest and proven attempt was made by Francoise Hussenot.
• 1947 : Hussenot founded the « Société Francaise des Instruments de Mesure » so as to market his invention.
• 1953 : The Australian engineer Dr. David Warren conceived a device that would record the instruments reading and the cockpit voice.
• 1965 : Black boxes were redesigned and moved to the rear of airplanes.

• Sophisticated aircraft could have up to 1300 parameters! • Each parameter is recorded a few times per second• Example of parameters:

Voice’s recorder
• Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR)
– Permitted to record radio communication, cockpit voice and background noise (like motor, alarm…)
– Data are recorded on 4 magnetic tape channel
• Radio communication on channel 1 and 4• Communication with the aircrew on channel 1• Communication with the aircraft mechanic floor on channel 1, 2 and 4• Background mike on channel 3
