Halim EI-Dabh: Emeritus Professor of Music and African Culture
AtAt the age of 93, Halim El Dabh is the greatest living pioneer of Electronic Music. Born in Egypt, he began experimentation with wire-recording equipment in the early 1940's. He came to America by invitation of the State Department and a Fulbright Fellowship. While working in Washing-ton DC and New York City he composed for the choreographer Martha Graham, studied with Aaron Copeland and was good friends with fellow composer Leonard Bernstein.

Dr. Eric Anthony Johnson PhD.:community organizer
I do not normally dress up my VIP subjects in super-hero outfits. But in this case circumstances just made it unavoidable. I was working on a special project; a series of portraits of community leaders in the Akron, Ohio area. Part of the mandate was to avoid the conventional, and boring, style of executive portraits. I learned from Eric Johnson’s secretary that he was a big fan of comic-books and Superman. It just so happened that twenty years before in Chicago, I had photographed an all-star athlete in a Superman costume for a magazine. With JohnsonJohnson’s tall stature and a little Photoshop work the fit was perfect! I under-stand that Dr. Johnson had a life-size poster printed for his 7 year-old son’s bed-room wall.

In 1987 this young girl showed an avid interest in acting and film. Her mother brought the 12 year-old to my studio for some headshots. Today, Lauren is an award winning director and cinematographer.

No bigger change has happened in the two hundred year history of photography than the advent of Digital Imaging. With this revolution comes an irony. Black and white has gone from being the default standard to a ‘special effect’. It was once the common language which brought us so much of our information, entertainment and shared experiences. We lived in a full color world but watched and recorded it in black and white.
