The kitten had no home ami no name: he was

a stray at the Xorth Shore Animal Leajûe. I put a rubber rat

near him to see if he would stalk it.



Therewasn't a lion, h^cr, or leopard, no matter how

ldr<ê and vicious, who could not be tamed by

(junter-Gebel Williams, the most famous wild beast

fanicr in the world. He was prolific as well, and scored a

scries of successes with bears, rhinoceroses and giraffes. Yet for

all the roariti<^ crowds and standing ovations, he never suc-

ceeded in getting ordinary little pussy cats like my own Dina

to do a sifigle trick, like, say, sit still. In the closing chapter

of his autobiography \Jnt2in\ed, published a few years ago,

he wrote, ''the only animal I have found to be completely

untrainable for performance is an average house cat. These

small cats take advantage of their owners' love and, for the

most part, do as they please.''

In fact. Rule Number One is that nothing will

make a cat wafit to sit still less than your wanting it to.



I found this out for the hundredth time recently when I

fooUshly decided that Dina, who is all black with a couple

of white socks and a white dot near her nose, should sit still

for the picture on the hack flap of this book. Peter Jones, the

photographer, and I planned what we thought would be a

very simple shot: Dina, who usually lounges on the dining

room table all afternoon, would occupy the foregrouiul at her

usual spot, and I would pose behind her I fished Dina from

under the table and carefully placed her on her spot, but she

jumped off the table. I picked her up again and placed her

on the spot again and she Jumped of again. We repeated the

charade 20 or 30 tinws to no avail. \ext I tried cajoling

her with treats and placed a series of bribes on the fable.

She sniffed the salami and bacon, paid no atteiuion to the

milk, and never even noticed the mozzarella cheese.



/ remembered her weakness for large, fresh shrimp and found

one after going through every plastic container in the refrigera-

tor But no sooner had I placed it on the famous spot than she

jumped off the table with the shrimp between her teeth and

disappeared under a sofa.

We were about to give up the shoot altogether when

the strangest thing happened. Lucy, my other cat, who has a

soft calico coat and was rescued from a garbage dump, jumped

on the table and, without hesitation, assumed the pose that

we had intended for Dina all along. She hammed for the

camera as Jones shot away, and took a break as he reloaded.

She posed until she was sure we had a couple of good shots

and then got up and left as if her shift had come to an end.

Which brings me to Rule Number Two: most cats

don't like to be photographed, but every once in a while one

doesn't mind. It just can't be rushed.



When cameras were more primitive and glass negatives were

very slow, it was difficult to shoot cats unless they happened to

he asleep in the studio. This is why there are a lot more nine-

teenth century folk paintings of children with cats than there

are photographs. Cats started appearing in pictures in brightly

lighted city streets and gardens late in the nineeteenth century.

There are a lot of street cats in Eugene A tgets's Paris and in

photos of Rome and London. Later, with the advent of fast

cameras and more sensitive films, cats appeared in every situa-

tion imaginable. Cats have been rescued from fires and

plucked from atop trees; they have jumped for birds, fished for

goldfish, and carried kittens across roads.

But they've done it all at their own pace, precisely

when they felt like it.

shelter that she called the orphanage.

the favored star of his children's bedtime tales. The writer's

affection for cats, including his own Beelzebub,

Blatherskite, and Tammany, inspired great heights of description.

Of a kitten he wrote: Cataline, the youngest, was black,

and he had a self-seeking nature, his motives were nearly

always base, he was truculent and insincere.

cat at DiMartino's Fish Market. He was very friendly and always

looked hungry. But he led a very cushy existence.

resident cat, highly educated and extremely

social, at the public television station.

This was taken when they were doing a show

and had just cleared the set. NJ Jumped

up suddenly and appeared on all the monitors.

He sort of stole the show.
