degree in painting is buttressed by Baratta's in art history. Their style is

e"pressed in radiant color and clean forms. The family room, one of the

hubs of the home, features a patlerned carpet that recalls Jasper Johns'

work (with deliberate absence of pigment integral to parts of it so the yarn

"breathes,w as did Johns' canvases), diamond·quilted upholstery inspired

by Matisse's harlequin motifs, and square-within-square throw pillows

that conjure Josef Albers' disciplined compositions.

Directly below the family room is the equally convivial, o!",n

kitchen, outfitted for cooking en famiUe, everyday dining and lounging

about on an invi ting organic sofa and lounge chairs-all interpreted in

perfect sky blue accented with sunny orange. Elegant bay windows on

both levels stretch the rooms out toward a spacious garden. A more deco

rous library wrapped in pine paneling is a nod to "grown·up· space.

There's no need for a formal living rOOm.

By the owners' request, blue is the order of the day, but the design·

ers broke it up with gray suede cloth, warm wood tones, healthy doses of

white and a few hot accents. Paralleling the artistic tension between col

ors is the play of contemporary against classic. Says Baratta, "l love it

when a house retains a sense of tradition and then we come in and fuse

revamped by Janna Bullock, the Russian ·born real estate develop." who

made a name for herself in New York buying, renovating, and reselling

townhouses on Manhattan's Upper East Side. ~For art and archite<:ture to

cohabitate, it is important to create inspirational interiors and not sterile

environments,' says Bullock, a philosophy she brought to life in the six th ·

story tomer unit she transformed at The Plaza .

In this 3,000 square-foot apartment, Bullock combined her passion

for historic a rchitecture with her love of contemporary a rt to crea te a ca lm,

tranquil environment the designer describes as having stillness imbued

with a life force that is created by art. "When you design a colle<:tor', reB ·

idence, it is important that the art has enough space to live, inspire, and

influence," she elaborates. "There needs to be harmony between all of the

components." And the outs ide is part of the equation.
