Students admire the art during the Surajkund Mela-2020 in Faridabad

An educational trip to Surajkund Craft Fair is an annual extravaganza of DME Media School. As part of this exercise, the trainers – the faculty members of DME Media School – work with students in nurturing their creative instinct.

It was a field day for the students of journalism and mass thcommunication of DME at the eventful 34 Surajkund Craft Fair

on February 12, 2020. Students of all three years of BA(JMC) learned and honed their skills in outdoor photography, AV production, podcasting and V-logging on a large canvas with an international exposure.

To capture the merriments of Surajkund Mela amid thousands of enthusiastic visitors was initially a challenging task for the students but under the supervision of Dr Susmita Bala, Head, DME Media School and other faculty members, they managed to accomplish all the tasks assigned to them.

"It was a great educational experience for me as I learned so many things on a single day. I liked the concept of choosing one state

from the country as a central theme and promoting the rich inheritance of it with other states", said by AkshayArora, a first-year student.

Surajkund craft fest gave students a perfect platform to practice different

aspects of photography and videography. Stalls of countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Syria and Nigeria gave them ample opportunity to learn about the handicraft of these nations.

''I enjoyed capturing the Mela. I belong to Uttarakhand and it was good to see stalls of my state in the fair. Cultural performances of the artists were incredible" said Harsh Kandpal, a first-year student.

India and Spain are similar in many ways. They are as close to their family as Indians are. The cultures are alike and their food is familiar as well, with addition of a few spices.

How significant has DME been in shaping your career?

DME was the base of my career. It all started here. The professors were really helpful and were there whenever we needed them for career advice or any academic doubt.

How has your transition from India to Spain been like?

My transition from India to Spain has been really smooth. My family and friends have been really supportive and the people of Spain have been the most helpful people I've ever met. They have helped me with every problem that I faced. That's what you expect when you're in a foreign land. Be it the students or the teachers, they all welcomed me warmly, so I felt at home.

In what ways Spain and India are similar and different in terms of life and career opportunities?

The biggest difference that I personally feel between these two countries is that people here are more helpful to each other, they are more responsible towards the environment and their country.

You mentioned being attracted to new ideas and developing new interests along the way. Is it advisable to be open to all opportunities, rather than pursuing a single goal?

It's always advisable to have a dynamic mindset and keep learning new things. I have a curious mind and

that's why I studied digital marketing and Spanish after graduating from DME and tried new things in between. It has been a consistently changing process to find the field that interests me the most. As I started studying Spanish, I generated genuine interest in the language.

Any advices for media students on career in today's market scenario?

As a new decade has begun and with the number of technologies we have, the importance of digital platforms is only going to grow. It is an amazing time to be an independent content creator and make the use of social platforms more responsibly.

Teaching has always been my passion. I started teaching even before becoming a HR professional. Both professions have been satisfying but would definitely say that teaching gives me more satisfaction as it is what I always wanted to do.

Q. Do you think discipline plays any role in teaching? What is your approach?

Q. Being a communication teacher, what challenges do you face while teaching?

Today's generation has excess access to technology so they have been drifted away from the habit of reading books. This lack of reading habit has made it difficult for this generation to be well versed with the rules of the language, be it Hindi or English.

Q. Working in industry as HR professional, what made you shift to teaching?

I strongly believe that making students accountable for their actions is the best way to discipline them. I prefer to explain what's expected of them, so they're set up for success.

Q. Is there anything you would like to suggest to students?

In the end I would like to emphasize that reading and writing are two such exercises that everyone should make a habit, because these habits will d e fi n i t e l y i m p r o v e t h e i r communication skills and it will help them express themselves well.
