“MCOT is glad that Thammsat University has shown interest to our company today. We will be showing the process of making a television program, how it all works in the studio and the control room. And we will be showing the place where we broadcast the news and Modern Radio, MCOT’s radio station”

Our day started off with students of BJM gathering at the MCOT lounge, high ceiling and the long hallway was filled up with more than 70 students. We were introduced to Prachaya Polrat, the only photojournalist of MCOT, will be our tour guide though the company. “MCOT is glad that Thammsat

University has shown interest to our company today. We will be showing the process of making a television program, how it all works in the studio and the control room. And we will be showing the place where we broadcast the news and Modern Radio, MCOT’s radio station”, said by Prachaya with an active voice.

We were taken to another building, the room was small, filled with old equipment. “In this room, it’s like a small museum where we collect old equipment that was used before. There’s the old camera, we didn’t have the wireless function then, so the wires of the microphone are attached to the camera.” There are pictures on the wall that was filled with history of the company’s television programs. Then we were led to a red steel colored, fence looking object, “This is the first transmitter and antenna of MCOT”.

After that we followed Prachaya to the first studio inside MCOT. “This room we call it “Stu” or studio. This is where we record the program “Samosorn Sukaphap” (Health Club) and “Jab Ngen Chon Tong” (To Make Money) that belongs to MCOT. And there’s “Kow Khon Kon Kaow” (Inside the

News), “Chaow Kaow Khon” (News in the Morning), “Bai Nee Mee Kham Tob” (Answers in the Afternoon) that we collaborate with The Nation. Some programs are non-profit programs but most of them are because the company is in the stock market as a public organization.” It was a small room, with huge cameras and lights

on the ceiling. The stage was set for a talk show. It was set to look like a real living room. “In this room, it’s a well set up studio. We put stickers on the future board, but when it’s on camera, it looks like real books. We don’t usually turn on all the lights, it depends on the program.”

Everybody was very focused on listening and following Prachaya around the company. He led us to another studio that is across the hall. It was a very big hall but everybody was packing things and clearing the area “This studio is being strip down. It used to be one of the biggest studios in Thailand, but it’s not used anymore. Now there’s so many companies that have their own big studios, before we didn’t have that, they would come and use our studio.”

“There are so many activities that had been placed here, AF concert, The Start concert, NineEntertain, and also felicitating. All the big events had been created here. As the room is big, we have to use a lot of light, only 2-3 lights are already one million baht, the electricity bill is extremely expensive.”

As we walk to the next studio, Prachaya tells us more about the studios here at MCOT. “The next is the studio is set up for live shows, the cameras must be in an air-condition room. Most of the set is made set up the day before and striped down afterwards. The budget is also in the contract, they have to send use the concept for use to set up the studio.”

The studio we’re walking into is a live program of “Money Daily” (we had to turn off our mobile phones, we can’t take pictures with flash, and no loud noises!)

There were cameras all over the place and graphics were playing on the screen behind the 2 speakers. “The speakers will read from the telecomputer where the words will come up at the lower screen, but the speaker must know the news already. The

telecomputer is only a small element that is used when the speaker can’t remember the new. Everything depends on the speaker on how she’s well prepared, how much she knows about the news. The control room is the room where we decide which shot to choose to put on screen.”

“Next, is a room for reading news from the Thai News Information in each program such as sport news, royal news or

entertainment new,” said Mr. Prachaya.

We use this room for broadcasting live news; the news announcers should have the scripts of the news. In the script, they will write that who is an announcer and an editor. The news announcers will mark something down for trying to understand the news when they want to leave spaces during speaking and what words they do not understand.

Moreover, we use a new technique called “immersive”, the technique for producing the news in just one take. If the news announcers say something wrong, they have to redo again and

again. So, the news announcers should remember everything on the script. If they can’t remember, they can look at the paper for a bit but most of them are looking at telecomputer.

Many channels nowadays can produce the news very quickly. Especially, the Thai News Information should announce the news quickly and accurately, because it is the most reliable media in Thailand. The other information offices have to wait the Thai information office announcing first.

Because if the Thai information office has announced the news, it means those news are quite correct. The news announcers for Thai News Information do not use just only one person, but also alternate each other

every hour. If the news announcers are reporting the news in the other districts, they can write the news and send it back to the information office by e-mail.

The news announcers must understand everything in details. They have to prepare themselves at least one hour before broadcasting. The news announcers will come into a studio, sit down at announcer’s chair, and arrange all things in the paper and their mind. During announcing the news, a studio controller will tell them to turn the face to right or left side or move a little. Not only a studio controller who tell the announcers to act but also, a female announcer who sits behind the scene will tell them too. Also, all of these are a part of acting. The news announcers should practice hardly in this skill. Definitely, it is not easy to speak, listen and act at the same time. Immersive technique is very hard for news announcers. Because they have to use a lot of their energy and they have to take many scenes.

Do you know that new reporter has to prepare for report more than you think?

Then we walked to the editing section, it’s the control room. The cameraman uses this room for selecting, editing arranging the video, including preparing news. And next to it is the control room, where we put all the videos in order. This room is used 24 hours.

After they write the news, they also have to arrange pictures in order and modify them. Plus, they should know how long each news take is. For example, an editor should cut the pictures precisely

with 30-second-news.

Control room is the most important room where all completed programs are sent here and broadcasted to audiences

13

The last process in producing television program is to broadcast any program to

audience is in the presenting room. This room controls television program schedule. Some

program that MCOT doesn’t produce is sent to broadcast in tape such as movies, drama.

Officials in this room set how much time this program takes and when the advertisement

should break the program.

In each radio station room will include radio presenter, sound controller, and information finder. Nowadays the radio presenters can find the information by themselves, because radio station room will be equipped with computer, Internet and even a television to check out the latest news. If something happens, the radio presenter can choose whether he/she want to broadcast it or not by themselves.

The main element that makes people choose to listen to radio is because the popularity of the radio presenter and the clear target group they choose to focus on for each station.

For example 97.5 FM, this station opens Thai songs that mainly target on the teenager. The sponsor for this station will also target on teenagers as well. Moreover the radio presenter will have to be a good-looking person to help catch more attention from the listener.

!

The different between radio broadcasting and television broadcasting is television will have both picture and sound but radio will have only sound and the broadcasting will always be a live broadcast in case the radio presenter can’t come on that day. To fix that problem they will record the presenter sound, but the presenter have to beware to not mention about the weather or traffic because the record day is not the same day that the sound will be broadcast.

Fact :

!

Q: Did you know that MCOT doesn’t have only television programs, they also have radio stations? A: They have together 62 radio stations around Thailand, they got 9 radio stations in Bangkok.

DO YOU KNOW? If there is the case where the government needs to present out news to the public they can immediately jump in and switch the signal to their side. Doing this will cause no effect on the radio broadcasting but will cause some effect on the television field. The manager of the television program will lose some money.
