interior design by nne Gelbard, the parisian expert in home couture

Anne ounded her workshop a decade ago aer graduating rom the cole NationalSuprieure des Arts Dcoratis in Paris. Her workspace overfows with books (orinspiration), swatches o abric, other pieces that she has created and... some secrets!

Why? Because Anne Gelba has developed her own technique or using metal lea (gold,

silver, copper) to abric, paper and even eathers. The most prestigious names in ashion (Dior,

Christian Lacroix.) were quick to request her talents or creating items in their collections.

Recently, she has adapted the techniques she uses in haute couture or what she calls homecouture, with an exclusive collection o wallpapers, abrics, cushions and decorative panels.

Ce Mcell and Anne have worked together closely to conceive all the wonders that are

to be ound at La Belle Juliette, with the invaluable help o architect Vce Base and under

the daily supervision oPascal Mcell, present at every stage.

Materials, colours, urniture, lighting, foorcoverings, walls, bathrooms, rooms, salons...

absolutely everything has been careully thoughtthrough, studied, discussed...

The aim was to oer a rened dcor that succeeds in

combining a certain classicism with a contemporary

setting, mixing quality urnishings and the latest

technology, design and comort. (In the annex, youll nd

more inormation about the interior design choices).

La Belle Juliette oers our-star service and thirtyour

rooms, ranging in size rom 13m2 to 35m2. Prices range

rom 300 euros or a classic double room to 700 euros or

annex: an interview with nne Gelbard

met to talk) that were very much in vogue at the time.

Juliettes was the most requented and lively o the time.

These themes are spread over the our foors where the

    rooms are.

Youll start on the second foor up by getting to know

Juliette Rcamier. I wa nted very sober, monochrome

tones here (Juliette wore all white, right up to the end o

her days) and Madame de Stal, a very strong infuencewho will be represented by bold, contrasting colours.

The third foor is inspired by Italy and evokes movement,

long voyages by coach and horse. This explains the

simplicity o the materials and styles used. The accent

is on the walls, the colour o the sky, with large rescoes

that suggest imaginary landscapes lost in the mist.

The ourth foor, dedicated to Chateaubriand, is laid out

like his memoirs rom beyond the grave. Its the the most

    masculine o all the foors.

The ith loor, called Les Causeries, represents

    socialising and tells o certain characters o the time;

scientists, philosophers, actors or women o loose

values. Its the most classic o the levels, with heavy

curtains, plaster mouldings and antique urniture

(taken rom the previous hotel and completely

    transormed by Ludovic Avenel).

The ground loor is also designed like a home with

the antechamber or salon des voyageurs which will

be a space or photo exhibitions (the HPRG label is a

sponsor o photography), the reception area, round,

which will be li ke a cocoon that welcomes guests, theTalma bar, a homage to a amous actor o the time and

riend o Juliette, who oten entertained her sa lon, the

music room, and the library. Each space is designed

like a living space. The idea is to g ive the impression

o walking i nto Juliettes townhouse and eeling at

home, not just in a hotel.

The spa is a poetic stroll, like a secret garden or the

Grecian baths and reproductions o caves that

were popular at the time. With a resco called The

extraordinary garden by Jean Boggio or Frantz, youll

discover a laid-back, calm space magnied by this

    ceramic landscape.

Ca yu ell me w yu came be vlve e pjec?

I met Alain Bisotti o the Htel Paris Rive Gauche label at the Maison

& Objet trade air in Paris. Thats where I show my home decoration

collection based on my haute couture work. He then introduced my to

Corinne and Pascal Moncelli, the owners o La Belle Juliette, and aer

a series o discussions and conversations we decided to collaborate on

the birth (or rather, rebirth) o their new hotel. It was a very down-to-

earth meeting, with a great eeling o complicity, shared ideas and trust.

It was Corinne who had an attachment or this 19th century heroine

and introduced me to her. Juliette Rcamier has a certain renown

o course, but shes not really known or what she did. I really got to

know her while designing the hotel. I had to steep mysel in her era,

her lie, like an actress researching her character. My eelings about

her evolved over time, as theres an iconic image o her (as the most

beautiul woman o her era), but she was also a real businesswoman,

kind o a orerunner o what is now known as marketing or PR.

Sme e esgs uve cse ae a me cempa a

It was an era with a lot happening. Society was going through radical change,

new values were being ormed. It was just aer the Reign o Terror that

ollowed the French Revolution. Philosophy, design, the way o dressing, the

whole way o lie were perpetua lly changing. Greek reerences, the republic

and democracy were the basis or constructing a new liestyle, a new aesthetic.

Societys values were very ree. You have to remember that death and violence

were both very close. What now seems old to us - the Directoire style - was

new and innovative at the time, and both Juliette Rcamier and Josphine de

Beauharnais were considered trendsetter. So it seem logical to me - obvious

even - not to betray Juliette, to introduce key pieces o contemporary

design like the Risom chair or the Saarinen table, or excellent new pieceso current design like Arik Levy and Sam Baron. Im not here to copy the

style o an era, but to understand a character. It also allowed me to bring

in young creators and photographers like Elene Usdin, Valentine Fournier

and Marie Maurel du Maill who will be giving us their vision o Juliette.

Each foor marks a strong element rom Juliettes lie, either key people -

like Madame de Stal, her best riend and mentor, or Chateaubriand, the

great love o her lie - or snapshots rom her lie, like Italy, her reuge

and venue or the cultural and political gatherings or those exiled by

Napoleon Bonaparte, or the literary salons, the causeries (where people

My approach or this hotel was to make a place, a reassuring house, not

a concept. Juliette was an excellent host, so I wanted to make the hotel a

warm cocoon or voyagers discovering Paris.

As a place o luxury too, I wanted to avoid the simple solutions, anything too

showy, and get back to chic, quality materials, use hand-craed wallpapers,

specially-created paint colours - the real luxury o the era - painted rescoes,

abrics woven to order. The time needed to design and build the space was

also a luxury that we gave ourselves.

Coming rom the world o ashion and haute couture, a special harmony,

a resonance o colours and materials, is especially important to me.

The sculpting o spaces, complementing elements, the surprise given by

the subtle mix o contemporary and antique are al so very important to me.

Is that my signature? Humorous touches - like bubbles o oxygen - withoutwhich lie would be completely dull. In act, I hate anything serious, boring,

pedantic or ake... I like poetry, the imaginary. With Corinne et Pascal

Moncelli, we got on absolutely perectly. They are concrete people, open,

rank, with the right words to help things advance. Together with Alain

Bisotti, everyone gave their time and energy to the project. Its a hotel that

    comes rom the heart.

The numerous restrictions and obligations dictated by the workings o a hotel

were just bumps along the way. I adopted a phrase said to me by one o my

teachers: Going beyond restrictions is the greatest o l iberties.

I really eel like this rst experience will be remembered as my best: a

ascinating theme, a huge amount o reedom and trust, amazing, unny,

adorable bosses... and eet on the ground. I hope that the guests will eel this

ambiance when they stay at La Belle Juliette.

Even i each foor has been designed to

    represent the undamental symbols o

Juliettes lie, I wanted each detai l to be like

at home; reassuring, comortable. I want

to intrigue and surprise guests and make

them eel at ease. For me, we are in Juliettes

home, or at least my vision o it.

    Wa was e bulg lke

we yu bega?A superb, impressive aade, a aded interior

and a strange foor plan all stretched out

that makes the building so particular, like

    a picture book.

    Wee hee any specific challenges

    yu face? Specal mmes?

Speciic challenges, yes!!! Its the irst

time that I have been asked to design a

space that must stand the test o time,

an interior to be lived in. You have to be

sure that your designs on paper and your

    dollhouse model really represent what

you have in mind. There have been many

special moments too, one in particular: a

weekend in Brussels with lots o laughing,

snowball ights, and lovely meals, when

we went round the antique stores like

curious children, looking or objects and

urniture with 20cm o snow outside. We

all went: Vincent Bastie, the architect on

the projects, Corinne and Pascal Moncelli,

Alain Bisotti, and Emilie Corre who has

helped me to transorm my ideas into

reality, doing a great translation job.I only had a ashion vocabulary at

the beginning, and it wasnt easy to

    turn that into architectural language.

I deinitely needed an interpreter who

could understand my way o explaining

things rom a ashion background. Each

proession has its own language, each idea

has a huge number o ramiications when

it comes to technical details, inishing

touches and lots o other elements...
