The 100 % control allows products to be classified prior to packaging and to be discharged and sorted according to their product quality. Non-conforming products will not be pack-aged which lowers costs.

Faccenda is the first choice in the UK when it comes to poultry. The leading family company stands for consistent quality. This, in addition to excellent service and a wide range of products are the main reasons why customers from the retail and food service sectors place their trust in Faccenda. Every year, 3,500 operators process 100 million chickens, turkeys and ducks. Faccenda has now expanded on this potential with one of the most modern, one of the largest and most technically advanced systems in Europe. And their chosen partner in this project: Bizerba.

Consistent quality and increased OEE

Faccenda keeps its promises. “Trust-ed Delivery” is the motto by which the company produces two million packages every week for the retail trade. The variety of fresh and frozen poultry products is huge: with tra-ditional Christmas turkeys, whole or cuts of poultry, natural or seasoned and convenience products, Faccenda meets the high demands of its cus-tomers: they want a wide range of products that undergoes regular change at a top level of quality. Being able to provide both economically is a real challenge.

In 2015, the British producer from Telford decided to build its sixth

processing and portioning works. 15 new packaging lines for the re-tail sector was what they wanted to have here. “We used the system planning to put our product label-ing, production monitoring and management system to the test”, says Philip Davidson, Director Oper-ations at Faccenda. “Previously, we were satisfied using a wide number of different systems and software products. But unfortunately this led to quality problems printing the la-bels, e.g. legibility and durability.

We wanted to work with a partner to create a centrally controlled prod-uct label information database so

that we could distribute the data au-tomatically to the production lines. Collecting the production data was also an important issue for us, so as to monitor the production process and to automate saving the data. This traceability is part of our quali-ty assurance and fulfills the require-ments our customers and food legis-lation demand.”

Systematic performanceBizerba had the right answer with our network-capable system: “Our contact partners understood what we wanted right from the word go. Bizerba designed a one-stop solu-tion that fully meets our very indi-


vidual requirements. And they also met our requirements in terms of reliability, flexibility and efficiency”, says Davidson. Comprehensible tar-gets, in the face of planned produc-tion volume at the new Telford site:

Around 1.5 million chickens are to be portioned, packaged and labeled— and transformed into about 750,000 marketable meat products.

Faccenda opted for the price label-ing system GLM-Imaxx with dual labeler and C-Wrap applicator for the new lines. “We wanted to at-tain maximum capacity at each of our 15 lines. The GLM-Imaxx has a

high throughput at a constant level of quality—just the things that we consider to be important”, explains the Director of Operations. And the

interplay between Bizerba technol-ogy and the Bizerba linerless labels met all expectations: “The printing process is perfectly coordinated. The thermal labels are clear and legible and positioned exactly where they should be. We offer our customers the quality they expect from our products and simultaneously save time and consumables”, summarizes Phil Davidson. The minimized role change increased the availability of the production lines. The print-heads last a lot longer on the high-quality thermal paper. “All in all, the com-bination of Bizerba technology and labels has had a positive impact on ROI. Our processes have been sim-plified: from the uniform spare parts we use for all applicators, our em-ployee training courses through to operation and maintenance.”

of production. BRAIN2 controls all labeling sections centrally, from individual packaging to the finally packaged goods. The system records data in real time. Faccenda uses this data to monitor performance and identify where processes can be improved. And it enables the com-pany to produce flexibly. Phil David-son: “Thanks to the open, modular architecture, remote modification of the production plan is quick and secure, for example when customer demand changes. We are connected to our systems and other elements of the processing chain. We also check the entire equipment used in our lines digitally. As a result of this data security, we are reliable at pro-ducing the quality we stand for. Our own database helps us too, which we have implemented now together with BRAIN2.”

Investments that payThe summary of the Direction Op-erations is duly positive: “We have improved our OEE figures through simpler, more effective and quick-er changeovers. That is important in a plant where we make upwards of 100 changes daily. We have also more confidence in our data integ-rity through the control the system affords. With Bizerba’s intelligent system, we are producing more punctually, more efficiently and can react more flexibly to our customers’ requirements. We are extremely sat-isfied with what we have achieved with Bizerba. Our overall equipment effectiveness and constant product quality prove it: Our Bizerba system solution pays off.” Reason enough for the British company to think about installing further Bizerba sys-tems at its other plants.

Sustainable productionSustainable production of labels is important to us. We are saving resources by working in an energy and material efficient way and only use FSC-certified paper.

And this is yet another result of our decades- long experience: At international locations, by using our technical know-how we manu-facture labels which are free from BP-A, BP-S and lately also free from phenol and we utilize low-migration ink. Ideally suitable for the food industry.

Recycling is another aspect in our production: A special extraction system collects paper scraps. After being sorted they are further uti-lized, e.g. for the production of silent asphalt. With these sustainable performances we sup-port you in fulfilling a customer trend towards sustainably produced packaging.

Clear trend: TransparencyA current packaging trend for fresh products are transparent hard trays. Consumers are at-tracted by this appealing design: They can see color and shape of the product which allows them to get a clear picture of the product’s quality.
