OWNERS of the houses in Block A at Foxford Court, Lucan, Co. Dublin have expressed concerns that their homes are not properly fireproof and a potential safety hazard.

Local TD for Lucan, Derek Keating, has called on the new Manager of South Dublin County Council to immediately examine these houses, as the 14 duplex properties are potentially putting many lives at risk.

“I am asking the Fire Officer in South Dublin County Council to immediately

examine these 14 duplex properties to ensure that the families who are residing there are safe. I know that two of the three reported houses have shown from examination that they are not fire proofed” said local TD Derek Keating.

“South Dublin County Council has indicated that it is not their problem. However, I am calling on the Council to immediately examine these properties at no cost to any of the residents to ensure that the apartments are safe for habitation,” he continued.

It was reported last November that a resident discovered that he could reach in under the wall into the apartment next door after he had lifted the floorboards in a bedroom. Currently, many residents in this area are in arrears with their management fees due to the difficulties of our economy which was inherited by this Government. TD Derek Keating continued to voice his concerns by saying: “I have been in contact with residents in Blocks B and C today and I am satisfied that they do not share the same concerns which have been expressed by some of the residents in Block A.

“Currently, the residents pay €1,400 per year

in management fees and I have been informed that an extraordinary general meeting of the residents is being planned to deal with other matters. However, the difficulty in relation to the fire proofing of houses is a major concern and the responsibility of South Dublin County Council,” he said.

The builders of the development, Newlyn Developments, has said that they were unaware of any problems that the apartments were

completed and handed over to the council having complied with all regulatory and compliance issues.

The company continued on to say that it had not been in contact with South Dublin County Council over the matter, but that they were prepared to answer any questions and meet any stakeholders if they were required to do so.

“Many Lives In Danger At Lucan’s Own Priory Hall”Story continued from page one

A CAMPAIGN to save Ballyfermot College is gaining momentum by the day as teachers and students unite in an effort to combat its downgrading. Under proposals set out by Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon, BCFE will be incorporated into SOLAS in the coming years.

This means that the college will no longer be recognised as an educational body, but as a training body. This could mean the college will lose a number of its highly-rated courses. While the proposals are in the early stages, BCFE has already put together a plan of action and the staff have set up a ‘Save Ballyfermot College’ campaign on Facebook.

Deputy Principal, Kevin Devine spoke about how SOLAS could affect the college, should the proposals go ahead and result in the college being downgraded. He said: “There are a number of difficult issues that are facing the college. In the short term it could be budget cuts, and in the medium term incorporation into SOLAS. “We fear that if cuts are implemented the college will lose staff, then lose classes, and go into a downward spiral”. “We are concerned that the higher education courses that we run will not fit into the SOLAS model. We are confident that those in power will recognise the significant contribution Ballyfermot College has made to Irish education and alleviate the situation”.

Another area of concern for the college is the availability for progression for students. Many students from BCFE go on from BETEC and FETAC courses to higher education courses within the college as well as other educational institutions around the world. BCFE Deputy Principal Diarmuid O’Brien spoke about his concern for the progression of students, He said: “Ballyfermot College offers progression to third level institutions and we fear that the availability of progression will be stopped. If we lose our BTEC programmes there could be significant consequences for the college.” He went on to say the college has been receiving support from

local TD’s and councillors: “A lot of ministers have taken up the cause of the ‘Save Ballyfermot College’ campaign and they have brought the issue to the attention of Minister Ruairi Quinn”.

One of the TD’s who has been voicing concern for the ‘Save Ballyfermot College’ campaign is local Labour TD, Eric Byrne. He said: “I am well aware of the current issue at BCFE, and I have made numerous representations at to the minister. I agree that the college plays a vital role not just in Ballyfermot, but in the greater Dublin area. The success of the graduates of BCFE speaks for itself. I don’t see a need for a change. I await the minister’s response and look forward to the situation being resolved”.

Senator Cáit Keane recently highlighted the issue in the Seanad. She asked the Minister to provide assurance that the college “will be able to provide degree courses that supersede Level 6 under SOLAS”.

Indeed the success of the college and its graduates is one of the main points being raised by members of the ‘Save Ballyfermot College’ campaign.

Hundreds of messages of support for the campaign have been left on the Facebook page, while others have left comments about their time in BCFE.

Former animation students and founders of awarding-winning animation company Jam Media were very complimentary about their time in the college. They said: “Studying at Ballyfermot was a fantastic experience. The college gave us the foundation to forge successful animation careers, working at huge international companies such as Disney, Bluth and MTV, where we truly honed our skills and craft before going on to set-up our own award-winning company, JAM Media. Ballyfermot in essence has been the root of our success.”

Other messages include one from Emma Morris, who has worked on one of the biggest television shows in the world since her time in

the college. She said: “Not only did BCFE give me a HND in Television Production so that I could progress to a BA(Hons) Degree in Edinburgh, and my first paid TV work on XFactor, it gave me the greatest friends that I still keep in contact with to this day. The best years of my life were in Ballyfermot and I hope that more and more people get to have the same experience I did by keeping it open to its fullest potential.”

RTÉ has recently released the shockingly high salaries of their highest earners, leaving the nation stunned and confused over RTÉ’s messed up priorities. As of 2011 RTÉ was doling out salaries as high as around €700,000, but at least their latest contracts have introduced some cuts to their broadcaster’s salaries of around 30%. But is 30% enough? In this economy surely RTÉ’s elite should take a bigger cut leaving RTÉ with more funds for their programming?

When the figures immerged Ryan Tubridy was revealed to be RTÉ’s highest earner as of his salary in 2011 which was a whopping €723,000 but when his contract was renewed he took a 31% cut reducing his salary to €495,000, which is still a figure most of us can only dream of in these hard times. While also in 2011 Pat Kenny was sitting on a substantial salary of €630,000 his contract is up for review this year so we can only hope that his new salary will better represent his contribution to Irish society through his broadcasting duties.

Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources thinks that there is room for more cuts to RTÉ’s broadcasters. “The information published by RTÉ illustrates that there are several broadcasters at the station who

are paid exorbitant amounts from the public purse. While there has been a reduction from previous levels, the salaries received by several members of staff remain extremely high.”

The salaries of RTÉ’s elite stay extremely high while the rest of the population struggle on with the ever rising costs of running their homes. Deputy Colreavy continued, “At a time when there are so many families struggling with household bills and mortgages it angers people to see broadcasters receiving such high salaries.”

It’s hard to watch broadcasters such as Ryan Tubridy, Pat Kenny, Joe Duffy and so on make so much money while the rest of us struggle on with our mountains of bill and now this new Household Tax, we as a people are struggling while our nations most respected media organisation fails us. RTÉ should revise their priorities when it comes to the cuts that they’re making, instead of overpaying their broadcasters they should go back to drawing board and put more funds into the programming that their producing. RTÉ has a responsibility to represent and inform the Irish people, but with their recent cuts to programming in regional services they seem to be failing the people who are funding their overpaid broadcasters. Deputy Colreavy went on to say, “The national broadcaster should reduce the high earnings by some at the station. There should be a greater emphasis on programming rather than on personalities. This money would be better spent on diverse and quality programming which would serve all the people of the country.”

RTÉ should go back and rethink where their priorities lie, it’s their responsibility to keep the people of their nation informed and update on current affairs and they won’t achieve this by wasting their money on overpaid broadcasters.

RTÉ High Earners Need to Take a Bigger Cut!

SINN Féin TD for Dublin South West, Seán Crowe, has raised the issue of gambling addiction with the Taoiseach in the Dáil. Crowe highlighted the negative affect that gambling addiction has on thousands of families in Ireland and asked the Taoiseach if he would support legislation which would stop the glamorisation of gambling and introduce a health warning related to gambling activities.

Gambling online is big business and was estimated to be worth 44 billion euro globally last year. There are no statistics

available for Ireland and no major research has been done to find out the true extent of Irelands gambling exploits; however it is estimated that Irish online gambling nets company’s about 2 billion euro a year.

Deputy Crowe said:“There is urgent need for legislation

which would address the glamorisation of gambling and help to curb gambling addiction, which is negatively affecting thousands of families and individuals across the state.

However many others, from all walks of society, have a gambling problem

or addiction that will negatively affect their families and loved ones. The easy accessibility and normalisation of online and offline betting is a curse for many families and individuals.

In some other EU countries there is a health warning following gambling advertisements, which alerts the viewer to the dangers that gambling can actually cause. We need to follow suit in Ireland and update our laws and regulate advertisements in this area.

I welcome that the Taoiseach recognises that gambling addiction is a very serious

issue and that extensive work is being done to bring legislation on this issue forward. He also stated that he will update the Dáil on the progress of this legislation soon.

Gambling online and offline can bring short term joy to some, but unfortunately, many lives have been left destroyed by this addiction. It is time that we finally legislate and tackle the gambling addiction crisis that we are facing as a society.”

Crowe raises gambling addiction with the Taoiseach

ACCORDING to a recent report from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), the rate of Irish mothers who breastfeed their new-born babies is severely lagging behind that of other European countries.

Five out of every 10 babies born in Ireland are breastfed, compared with every eight out of every 10 babies born in the UK. In countries like Sweden, Denmark and Norway, breastfeeding rates are even higher, as almost every baby born in these areas is breastfed.

Breastfeeding in Ireland experienced a significant drop in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, and in spite of a 7% increase in the amount of mothers who breastfeed from 2005 to 2012, the Health Service Executive (HSE) are still unhappy with the persistent apathy towards breastfeeding in this country, particularly amongst younger mothers.

La Leche League Ireland is a voluntary organisation which provides information and support

to women to want to breastfeed their babies. There are over 100 La Leche League Leaders in Ireland with more than 40 groups across the country.

A La Leche League Leader and spokesperson has explained why breastfeeding rates in Ireland are lower than other European countries, and why the issue can often be seen as something of a taboo. “Print media contributes to the perception that formula feeding is the norm. Representations of breasts as sexual objects in the media powerfully interact with beliefs about the inappropriateness of breastfeeding in public,” they says.

In regards to the family influences which can affect whether or not a women breastfeeds her new-born, the La Leche League spokesperson continues on by saying: “The opinion of the father can either dissuade or persuade a woman’s decision to breastfeed. The grandmother of the infant often plays a key role, and whether

or not there is a positive history of breastfeeding within the family.

The HSE has stated that there are several important benefits of breastfeeding a new-born baby, and La Leche League Ireland state that if an infant is breastfed for the first six months of their lives, then they are able to properly achieve “optimal growth, development and health”.

“While it is unclear why breastfeeding is protective against SIDS, study after study has highlighted that breastfed infants are healthier than their bottle-fed counterparts. There have also been studies which have shown that breastfeeding reduces the risk of infants becoming obese when they become older. Infants are able to self-regulate their intake through breastfeeding, and those infants who are breastfed have a lower plasma insulin level, which stimulates greater adipose tissue deposition,” claim La Leche League Ireland.

DUBLIN Bus needs to put the community first according to Lucan Councillor William Lavelle.

Speaking at Dublin’s March South County Council meeting in Tallaght, Fine Gael Cllr. Lavelle put forward the motion to call on the Minister of Transport, Leo Varadkar, to “promote and permit greater bus service competition” on city-centre routes and to allow for new ‘orbital’ bus routes in West and South County Dublin. He said that Dublin Bus was not providing enough town to town routes that the people in the community deserved. Lavelle told the 26 elected council members that there were fewer buses in Lucan than there were 20 years previously. He blamed this on the ‘archaic bus licenses and regimes’ that prevented Dublin Bus from expanding.

In addition to new routes, Lavelle put forward a motion to

encourage the government to further support the ‘extension of subvention to private bus operators’. He commented that he would like to see private buses take on routes that Dublin Bus have failed to expand. Lavelle mentioned that it is becoming a problem for students from Lucan and Clondalkin to attend IT Talllaght as there is no direct or linking bus route like they were promised years ago. He argued that while bus drivers were the greatest asset to the company, Dublin Bus is not responding to the needs of the community. Lavelle called for a regulated frame work for the public and private companies to work together.

Lavelle was greeted with a mixed response from his fellow councillors, some of whom welcomed the expansion of public bus routes but discouraged the continuation of

subvention of the private companies. Labour’s Tallaght South Councillor Chris Bond supported the motion but believed that Dublin Bus was a success story as he felt the company had increased its reliability in the last year. However he was in favour of the expansion of routes across Dublin. Some councillors such as Labour’s Eamon Tuffy agreed to support the motion only if there was an amendment to dismiss the subventions to private bus as he felt it was too costly and Dublin Bus was capable of taking on extra routes if the circumstances called for it. There was support for the amendment but little for the motion and it did not go through.

The topic of buses came up again when Fianna Fail Councillor Eammon Walsh put forward a successful motion to appeal to have the Nitelink bus moved from D’Olier

Street back to College Green as some members of the public felt the current location was too dangerous. Councillor Walsh said that the stop was located on the same road as three pubs and one nightclub causing unease among the public. He emphasised that Bus Átha Cliath was not taking people who had to work late in town into consideration an also proposed that their timetable be altered to increase the frequency of buses during the night.

Other motions that were debated included new regulations to deal with the disposal of dog waste in public places, continuous support of schools in the area of science and mathematics, property tax clarification and further action plans for job creations.

long you want each strip! Dont worry about jagged edges. 3. Cut one strip of t-shirt cord & place inside the inside of the C shape cards. 4. Holding the C’s together so you sandwich your short cord inside, begin the wrap the t-shirt cord

tightly around the C shape card, keeping the short cord ends free.5. Keep going wrapping fabric around the Cshape card until you cant see any more card. 6. Knot the short cords together really tightly. 7. Cut in between the Cshaped cards so the pom pom appears and pull away the pieces and you are

left with a cute little upcycled t-shirt pom pom! 8. Repeat to make more pom poms then tape two twigs together to make a cross shape and hang

IRELAND has a very high rate of home ownership, with 70% of people owning their own homes. Successive governments refused to introduce rent controls and have systematically reduced the stock of social housing. From July 2013, this Government are imposing a property tax so that people will pay an average of €300 to €400 a year, just to live in their own home. The government claims that such a tax is necessary to broaden the tax base and to ensure a steady stream of revenue to the state.

By introducing an annual property tax, the state will be guaranteed an income stream of €500 million a year. But they refuse to introduce a wealth tax. A tax on Financial Transactions of just 0.05% would yield more than the €500 million a year that the Home Tax is supposed to raise. A wealth tax would target assets that are valued at over €1

million and would not be primarily focussed on family homes. Less than 2% of the revenue from the Property Tax will be derived from properties valued at over €1 million and so the vast majority of the taxes will be raised from those who simply live in a house or apartment.

The decision to tax 125,000 local authority homes exposes the Labour Party rhetoric that this is a “progressive tax”. Local authority tenants do not own property, yet their homes are subject to a ‘property’ tax. Local councils will add on the tax to the weekly rent. This shows that the tax is being imposed on the family home and not a property asset that represents a form of wealth. Its purpose is to hit the majority of the population – rather than the tiny financial elite who caused the economic crisis.

The Property Tax will not help to fund local

services. The central funding for local government has been cut by cut by 20% between 2008 and 2012, a total of €522 million. And this just happens to be precisely what the government hopes will be raised from the property taxes. In other words, property taxes will not lead to any improvement in local authority services. It will simply divert money that previously went from central government to local government to pay off bondholders.

The Fine Gael manifesto stated that ‘a recurring, residential property tax on the family home is unfair’. The Labour Party stated that they favoured a ‘site value charge’ rather than a property tax. They also stated that there should be exemptions for those who recently paid large sums in stamp duty and those in negative equity. But we got neither. Last year a magnificent nationwide campaign of Boycott and Protest resulted in 50%

of home owners refusing to comply with the Household Charge legislation. One hundred years ago James Connolly said “Unjust laws were made to be broken”. Today this law is completely unjust, undemocratic, unwarranted and unwanted.

Dates of Importance for the campaign against the household charge.

• April 13th is a National Day of Protest when everyone is asked to converge on Dublin for the meeting of EU Financial Ministers. Meet at Parnell Square, 12 midday.

• April 27th Rally and National Conference against this unjust tax on homes.

• May 1st – Day of Civil Disobedience and Action across the country.

THE gastric-brooding frog, which swallowed its eggs, grew its young in its stomach and gave birth through its mouth, became extinct about 30 years ago. But scientists working on the “Lazarus project” have successfully reactivated its DNA and produced an embryo in a process that sounds like Jurassic Park but is closer to the cloned sheep Dolly.

Prof Mike Archer of Sydney’s University of New South Wales said the gastric-brooding frog was an extraordinary creature. “In the stomach these eggs went on to develop into tadpoles and the tadpoles then went on to develop into little frogs, And like any pregnant mum, when you have little babies rattling away in your stomach saying, ‘let me out’, she would then open her mouth and out would pop little frogs”. “The first people that saw that were aghast. By the time anybody got excited about it, suddenly it was extinct.”

The team, which also includes researchers

from the University of Newcastle north of Sydney, found some gastric-brooding frog carcasses stored in a deep freezer and were able to recover tissue.

Using a technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer; they implanted the dead cell nucleus from the extinct species into an egg from another frog species. From this, the scientists created an embryo. “There was one day in the laboratory that was so exciting when all of a sudden the egg from this living species that had had one of these extinct frogs’ nuclei inserted into it started to divide, and then divide again,” Prof Archer said. “We were holding our breath and then it just kept going . . . It went on to develop an embryo.”

Though the embryo has so far only survived 36 hours, the Lazarus project team is confident that producing a tadpole is the next step.

“We are in a research zone beyond where anyone else has been before and there’s no signpost,” Prof Archer said.

YAHOO! has announced the creation of more than 200 new jobs in its Dublin Operations Centre over the coming year. Recruitment has already begun in the areas of HR, customer support, operations, technology and finance which will support its business across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Yahoo! began their Dublin operation ten years ago and has been growing strongly ever since. Their Dublin team offer technical and operational support, customer care and finance/related services for the EMEA. Meetings have been taking place over the last twelve months between senior Yahoo! executives, Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD and Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD. This was

part of he IDA’s investment missions in the past year.

The ICT sector has been targeted through the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs so this announcement that Yahoo! will be more than doubling its workforce is proof that this plan seems to be working.

IDA Ireland’s CEO, Barry O’Leary said, “Yahoo! is one of the jewels in the crown of the Irish-based ‘born on the internet’ companies. It has successfully been running its operation here for nearly ten years.” He welcomed the decision by Yahoo! to expand in Ireland as it, “further endorses the country’s reputation as a location to service the whole European, Middle Eastern and African regions.”

The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

“For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a com-mon sight on our streets and driveways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the country both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.”

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

AROUND 1,500 people with disabilities in Dublin are to suffer cuts to their services according to Fianna Fáil.

Dublin Fianna Fáil Councillor Deirdre Heney has said that there will be a 20% cut in State support to those with severe disabilities starting from July 2013. New figures released by the party have revealed that 740 people in the northside of the city will be hit directly by the cuts while a further 840 in the southside will be affected. Around 185 individuals in receipt of the Mobility Allowance will see a reduction in their income as the Government decided to axe the scheme in February of this year.

Councillor Deirdre Heney has described the cuts as ‘savage’ and believes they will have a negative impact on

families and society. “The Government has ripped

the scheme from them without warning, without consultation and without any consideration of the enormous impact it will have on their lives. Fine Gael and Labour’s justification for axing the mobility allowance is that it is ‘obsolete’. I very much doubt that the hundreds of people here in Dublin, and the thousands nationally, who have benefited from the scheme over the past number of years will see it that way. The Government has no alternative scheme ready to go in its place, so once again this looks like just another sneaky cut targeting the people who are most in need of support.”

Fears over disability cuts were voiced last September at a press conference held

by nine national voluntary disability organisations who called on the government to cease their cutbacks in state funding to people with disabilities. According to the chief executive of the Disability Federation of Ireland, John Dolan, nearly 800,000 people have had to deal with, “five years of unprecedented cuts to their ability to live ordinary lives in the community”.

Councillor Heney echoed John Dolan’s thoughts when she said that the cuts have been unfair in the last few years.

“What we have seen over the past two years is a sustained attack on people with disabilities. Fine Gael and Labour cut the disability allowance in their first budget two years ago. They cut home help hours and personal

assistants last August. They have cut the domiciliary care allowance and funding therapies for people with disabilities. They cut the respite care grant in this year’s budget. As if all of that wasn’t enough, they have now cut the mobility allowance and motorised transport grant.”

She has asked the government to disregard the new changes to preserve the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.

“It is not too late for the Government to reverse this latest deeply unfair decision as it we have two months before it kicks in. I am encouraging the people affected and their families to let their local Government representatives know just how damaging this cut will be to their lives.”

OVER 250 people are expected to take part in a massive clean-up of the River Dodder on the 6th of April.

‘Dodder Day’ comes after 500 fresh water fish were killed along a 2km stretch of the river from Old Bawn Bridge, Tallaght to Firhouse Weir in March. Brown trout, Lamprey and Stoneloach were among the dead fish.

Facebook group, Dodder Action organised the clean-up operation for the 23rd of March but due to adverse weather conditions it was postponed. However, over 50 people made their way to the river banks despite the event being cancelled.

Administrator for the page, John Lacy said: “Full black sacks of domestic waste are regularly being dumped into the river. The only solution we can see is to put cameras at all of the locations where this occurs.”

Dodder Action is encouraging anyone who is free on Saturday morning to get involved. “It’s not hard work, there’s just an awful lot to be done and it needs a lot of volunteers. Even in the harsh weather, everyone who goes out enjoys it,” said Lacy.

A number of local authorities, businesses and groups have sponsored

the event. Cleaning equipment such as black bags, gloves and pickers will be given to volunteers on the day. The Order of Malta and the IUSRU will also be present to ensure the safety of participants.

Safety rules and meeting point details can be found on the Facebook page and on Twitter: @dodderaction. Volunteers are advised to wear suitable clothing and strong footwear to the event.

The source of the contamination is currently being investigated by Inland Fisheries Ireland. Local Labour TD, Eamonn Maloney, has said that contamination of the River Dodder is a serious crime and those responsible should face prosecution.

“Inland Fisheries Ireland has informed me that they are pursuing a definite line of enquiry in relation to identifying who was responsible,” he said.

“The Dodder is a natural resource and a wonderful amenity which we must treasure and protect,” Maloney continued.

The river is the third largest in Dublin and spans from the Wicklow mountains to Ringsend

Seven Psychopaths is a comedy film written, co-produced and directed by Martin McDonagh. Seven Psychopaths stars

Colin Farrell (who keeps his Irish accent), Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and Tom Waits. This is the second collaboration between McDonagh and Farrell following the hugely popular “In Bruges”.

In Seven Psychopaths, Marty (Farrell) is a struggling writer who is trying to finish his

screenplay, which also happens to be called “Seven Psychopaths.” All Marty needs is some inspiration and a little focus, so his friends Billy (Rockwell) and Hans (Walken) try to help him out. This leads to Marty getting involved in the Los Angeles criminal world of dognapping.

Billy is a dog kidnapper, who kidnaps a dog who happens to belong to a psychopath called Charlie (Harrelson). This time Billy has kidnapped the wrong dog as Charlie will go to great lengths to

get his beloved Shih Tzu back.Seven Psychopaths is full of laughs, every single character in this film is as outrageous as the next. Colin Farrell is brilliant as the naive, struggling, screenwriter Marty. If you enjoyed Farrell in “In Bruges” you will definitely love him in Seven Psychopaths.

Sam Rockwell is hilarious, and plays the part of psychotic Billy so well. Christopher Walken is comedic gold in this film, and of course we cannot

forget Woody Harrelson who always knows how to play the part of a psychopath to perfection. In my opinion it seems all involved in this film had a great time making Seven Psychopaths and it really shows.

Seven Psychopaths is available to rent or buy now.

Dun Laoghaire Harbour set for bright futureFINE Gael Dun Laoghaire Deputy, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, has announced that a collective effort between Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council, the Harbour Company Board and local business associations will help to further develop Dun Laoghaire Harbour in the near future.

According to the recent National Ports Policy which was published by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar a plan has been put in place to transfer the corporate governance and oversight of the Harbour from the Department to the County Council, which is best placed to meet the long-term future needs of the harbour.

Mitchell O’Connor outlined some of the key plans within

the new policy, stating: “There are so many exciting projects attached to the Harbour with up to 14 cruise vessels, including the Queen Mary II, planning to come to Dun Laoghaire following a successful marketing campaign in the US by the Dun Laoghaire Cruise Stakeholder Group.

“This effort to develop the tourism potential of the Harbour will help it to maximise the use of the Harbour, and with an estimated additional 30,000 passengers and crew set to come ashore, the benefits for the town will be significant,” said Mitchell O’Connor.

A Masterplan, published in 2011, aimed to bring the 200 year progression of the development of the harbour to the next stage and realise

the potential of the harbour as a major marine, leisure and tourism destination. The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company (DLHC) wishes to enhance its attractiveness as a major gateway for tourists to Ireland, to extend the recreational and amenity value of the harbour, to promote investment in the harbour and to generate sufficient revenue from commercial operations to ensure the long term sustainability of the maintenance programme and marine facility that the harbour provides

“The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Master Plan, which was published in 2011, aimed at increasing the tourism potential of the Harbour and getting the best out of what we have to offer. Proposals have already been put to An Bord Pleanála for the

construction of a new quay that would be able to cater for larger vessels, to allow Dun Laoghaire to harness an increasing amount of tourism market share,” said Mitchell O’Connor.

Mitchell O’Connor finished by drawing attention to some of the major tourist opportunities which will be occurring in Ireland over the next few years, saying: “The Gathering represents a brilliant opportunity for people who have an interest in Ireland to pay a visit to our shores. With a host of conferences taking place at the Harbour, including the diaspora and the bratacha (flag) conference, all minds are focused on how best to develop Dun Laoghaire Harbour as a cultural amenity, a tourist attraction and a marine and leisure amenity”.

The Department of Health have released figures that show a dramatic decrease in the waiting times for inpatient and day case patients in a number of hospitals nationwide. The figures reveal very encouraging progress in the decrease of waiting times in our hospitals between February 2011 and February 2013. The numbers waiting between six months and a year have been reduced dramatically.

Since the end of February 2011, waiting lists longer than a year for inpatient and day case procedures have been eliminated in 15 hospitals and waiting lists longer than 9 months for these procedures have been eliminated in 9 hospitals. The number of adults having to wait more than

9 months for inpatient and day case surgery was down to 86 at the end of December 2012, from 3,706 in December 2011, a 98% decrease.

The number of children waiting over 20 weeks was down to 89 at the end of December 2012, from 1,759 in December 2011, a 95% decrease. The number of patients waiting over 13 weeks for a routine endoscopy procedure went down from 4,590 in December 2011 to 126 at the end of December 2012, a 99% decrease. In 2012, there were 20,352 less patients waiting on trolleys in comparison to 2011, representing an overall reduction of 23.6%.

Late last year the Government also negotiated a new deal to

cut the cost of medicines by €400million over three years and a significant new agreement was reached with hospital consultants to cut costs and improve their availability. The Government has also opened a new Cystic Fibrosis Unit in St Vincent’s Hospital and has chosen St James’ Hospital as the site for the new National Children’s Hospital.

Fine Gael TD Derek Keating has welcomed the figures released by the Department of Health and commented;

“Fine Gael promised to reform and improve our health service and we are delivering on this promise, despite the massive financial constraints that exist. The previous Government

thought it could solve our health service by throwing money at it and creating a multitude of management positions. This Government is managing through a practical, pragmatic approach to turn our health service around. It is great to see this approach benefitting patients in Tallaght and Blanchardstown hospitals.”

“Minister Reilly has established a Special Delivery Unit to work with hospitals to reduce the number of people on trolleys and waiting times for procedures. The results show that this approach is having a massive impact for patients.”

The new ŠKODA Octavia Combi is a new highlight in the world of compact cars. Like no other vehicle

in this segment, the newest ŠKODA combines high levels of functionality with dynamic elegance, featuring clear lines, perfect proportions and highest precision down to the smallest detail.

“This car is cast in one piece,” says Frank Welsch, ŠKODA board member for technical development. “It’s clear, dynamic appearance helps it stand out from the masses and is also more practical than ever before. The new ŠKODA Octavia Combi is the perfect interplay of form and function. A Combi that shows that even a large car can be beautiful,” explains Welsch.

It’s clear, precise forms, sharp edges and distinctive proportions

immediately catch the eye. “You don’t need any gimmicks or excessive decorations to have an attractive car, but rather a clear style that is timeless and remains appealing over many years,”, says design chief Jozef Kabaň. “That is what the new Octavia Combi stands for.”

ŠKODA have designed a new logo which they placed prominently on the bonnet – the “premium location,” as designers call it. At the same time, the logo is the origin of almost all the lines of the car. The logo already represents the ultimate in precision and clarity: it shows the finely detailed finned arrow in chrome on matte-black background, surrounded by a fine chrome line.

From the side the new Octavia Combi conveys pure dynamics, featuring the finely tuned interplay of lines, surfaces,

window graphics and proportion. The elongated Combi shape also benefits the car. The rear is clear, precise and clean. The new ŠKODA brand logo is located on the centre of the boot lid. The left side of the boot lid shows the ŠKODA company name, while the right side bears the Octavia model designation in new lettering. Everything is in its place.

Clean styling, timeless elegance and above all, lots and lots of space: these are features that are immediately evident in the interior of the new Octavia Combi. Each ŠKODA stands for spaciousness, especially the Combi. The designers were impressively successful in providing this space with a new definition in the Octavia. Everything is aesthetically appealing, precise and refined, whether it is control elements or air intake vents,

whether dashboard, steering wheels, gear shift levers, panels, door openers or power windows. Everything is new and extremely functional, which was the motto of the interior designers.

Ergonomics plays a major role: “The feeling you have in the Octavia is that of wearing a well-tailored suit,” says Kabaň. “Everything fits perfectly, and you feel great. The vehicle imparts a feeling of value and solidity that one does not necessary expect to see in this segment.”

Three equipment lines are available for the ŠKODA Octavia Combi: Active, Ambition and Elegance. Wheel sizes vary depending on the line (15 or 16 inch, steel or alloy) as do interior colours (ranging from black to black-grey to black-beige), decor choices, air conditioning, storage compartments,

instrument clusters, infotainment or safety equipment. The options for individualisation of the new Octavia Combi are almost limitless, be it chrome strips, nine steering wheel versions with three or four spokes, nine wheel designs and four wheel sizes, from 15 to 18 inches – no desires will remain unfulfilled.

Twelve colours are available for the exterior: three solid paints in candy white, corrida red, and Pacific blue as well as nine metallic paints, from topaz brown, race blue, platinum grey, brilliant silver, denim blue, rosso Brunello, cappuccino beige, and lava blue to Magic black with pearl effect.

Music

So JT is back. It has been nearly 7 years since the release of ” Future Sex/love sounds”. Many artists would

have faded into obscurity after such a long hiatus but not Timberlake, his flame still burns bright. So is it fair to expect Justin Timberlake’s new album The 20/20 Experience to sound like 2006? What we have here is a more mature, newly married, and happy 32 year old who is celebrating how far he’s come.

What’s apparent right from the beginning is that most of these songs are lengthy. The main album has ten tracks. Most have an extended intro or ending with about a 2 minute rave up where the chorus and music flips and becomes a

clever part two. For this album you either need to be a massive JT fan or very patient, and I have to admit, I’m neither.

“That Girl” sums up the album’s overall message: “I’m in love with that girl, and she told me that she’s in love with me,” sings Timberlake, cleanly and sweetly. The rest of the record reflects that contented emotion-- presumably inspired by Timberlake’s 2012 nuptials with actress Jessica Biel. He’s high off of love on album opener “Pusher Love Girl”, he’s enjoying a five-star reception with his head-turning date on “Suit & Tie”, he’s exploring the universe in a two-person vehicle on “Spaceship Coupe”, where he sings, “Everybody’s looking for the flyest thing to say/ But I just wanna fly away with

you.” “Mirrors” I think is the most ‘Future Sex/Love sounds’ sounding track on the album. Lead single “Suit and Tie” features Jay Z and is what I expected the entire album to sound like.

Yes, the singer unpacks his suave, impeccable falsetto and his producer Timbaland carries out some of his most compelling R&B grooves in years, but the laborious seven-minutes-plus songs meander too long. 20/20 is soulful, futuristic, ambitious, overlong—and, above all, incurably JT.

Depeche Mode are a renowned synthpop band who first introduced themselves to the

music world back in 1980. Since their formation, Depeche Mode has gone on to create several chart topping tunes, such as “Personal Jesus”, “Enjoy The Silence”, and “Just Can’t Get Enough”, which have more than stood the test of time, and arguably more popular now than they were back in the day.

Now, 33 years and 13 studio albums later, Depeche Mode mark their return to the scene with a new album full of new chart toppers and chorus chanters, all of which maintain the classic Depeche Mode element while also boasting a more matured

overall sound. The new record, titled “Delta Machine”, shows the prestigious new wave group doing exactly what they do best; synthesizer soaked tracks with just enough of a rock edge. One of the best examples off the disc, “Heaven” (appropriately also the album’s lead single, is a moderately slow paced song that showcases pulsating electric percussion work and soaring lead vocals, and eventually picks up with more dominant synthesizer playing that falls more in line with the band’s earlier works.

It’s definitely one of those songs that grows on you more and more after each listen, but for the most part it’s a solid effort, that leaves some, but little room for negative opinions.

Overall, Depeche Mode give a good performance throughout “Delta Machine”, especially considering it’s the band’s first work in four years. Even though the vocal melodies aren’t as pristinely featured as they were on the band’s earlier albums, it doesn’t take too much away from the overall listening experience.

Any established fan of Depeche Mode should be able to passionately enjoy this new release, as if bears enough of that classic sound to appeal to both long-time and casual fans of the band.
