New driving licence to be phased in from January 2013

A new form of driving licence is to be launched from the 19th of January under a new EU Wide directive. Anyone who applies for their first learner permit or is renewing their driving licence will receive a modern, plastic, credit-card sized version. The new licence will be in a format that is standardised and recognisable throughout the EU.

Currently there are different rules and over 110 different models of driving licences within the EU member states. This creates problems

of transparency for citizens, police forces and the administrations responsible for the administration of driving licences and leads to the falsification of documents which sometimes date back several decades. In order to prevent the single European driving licence from becoming an additional model to the 110 already in circulation, all member states will take the necessary measures to issue the single model to all licence holders.

Motoring

The Cortina Club of Ireland celebrated the 50th birthday of the iconic Ford Cortina in Septem-ber. Some 70 Cortina models converged on Ro-scarbery, West Cork, to display this iconic car. Produced at the Ford factory in Cork, the Ford Cor-tina was first launched in Ireland in 1962 and very quickly became a favourite with Irish motorists. With the launch of the Mk III model in 1970, the Cortina began more than a dec-ade as Ireland’s most popular car. It was the top selling model every year for a 10 year period (1972 to 1981 inclusive). “The Cortina is truly an iconic Ford with a great Irish legacy”, said Eddie Murphy, Chairman and Managing Director of Ford Ireland. “For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a common sight on our streets and drive-ways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the coun-

try both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.” The Cortina Club of Ireland which has over 100 members around the country was set up in 1995 and gives an opportunity for dedicated enthusiasts to get together, display their cars and share views, technical advice and spare parts. Speaking about his love of the car, Treasurer with the Cortina Club of Ireland, John Noel Cronin of Mallow says: “I used to own a Mark I Cortina in the 1970s and the beauty of the car was that it was so easy to work on. Just about eve-ry mechanical part in it unbolts and, with a little confidence, one can turn the saddest of Cortinas into a roadworthy classic.” Originally conceived as a replacement for the Ford Con-sul in 1962, the car ceased production in 1982 when it was replaced by the Ford Sierra. The car was named after the chic Italian Al-pine ski resort, Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Cortina was produced in

five variants (Mark I through V) and in motorsport, Cortina was a hugely successful nameplate during the 1960s and into the 1970s.TG4 has made a programme about the 50th anniversa-ry of the Cortina that will be screened during December.

FORD CORTINA: AN ICON TURNS 50

“For anyone who lived through the 60s and 70s, the Cortina was such a com-mon sight on our streets and driveways. It was a car that was loved by motorists across the country both for its modern new design and its great driving ability.”

Ferris & Dowds Call For World Heritage Status For GlendaloughLabour TDs Anne Ferris and Robert Dowds have called for the Government to press the case for Glendalough to be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site as soon as possible. With a rich cultural his-tory stretching back nearly 1,500 years and visits from thousands of tourists each year, Glendalough is a unique place which is worthy of being inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Anne Ferris said: “The people of Wicklow are very proud to have such a unique and beautiful attraction as Glendal-ough in our own county. I feel very strongly that the Government should press the case as strongly as possible for Glendalough to be made a UN-ESCO World Heritage Site in the near future. I have examined the criteria by which the World Heritage Committee determine whether a site can be designated and there is no doubt that Glen-dalough would comfortably fulfil the criteria. “We currently have only three other World Heritage Sites on the island in Brú na Bóinne, the Giant’s Causeway and Sceillig Mícheál, and it would be fantastic if we could add to that list by having Glendalough inscribed

on the list as well. I intend to write to people in the local community and to the other stake-holders involved so that we can make a big ef-fort to have Glendalough placed on the list. The Minister was very clear that there was nothing stopping Glendalough from being inscribed on the list as long as everyone in the community pulls together on this. It will be a fantastic project for the entire community in Wick-low, and hopefully we will reach our objective in the near future. There would be substantial benefits for tourism in Wick-low if Glendalough is designated as a World Heritage Site.

Robert Dowds said: “Glendalough is a fantastic heritage that the people of Ireland

treasure, and it is also a significant tourist draw which helps provide many jobs not only in Glen-dalough but also across the country. If it can be inscribed as being a World Heritage Site, this will only increase its attraction for tourists and help to boost tourist numbers further. With a history that

stretches back nearly 1,500 years, Glendalough is a place that must be protected and preserved. It is a fantastic piece of our heritage which is unique giv-en the exceptional natural beauty surrounding it. “

LABOUR Party T.D., John Lyons, has welcomed the announcement by Trinity College that it is to pilot a new admissions system for applicants to a selection of its courses next year.

“Under this new system, places will be offered, not simply based on Leaving Cert points, but also on their performance compared to other applicants from their school, and on a personal statement outlining why the student believes they are suitable for the place.

“I congratulate Trinity College on taking this bold step. As a teacher, I have seen first-hand the negative impact the ‘points race’ can have on a student’s learning experience. This new admission process seeks to offer placements on the basis of natural suitability rather than on a student’s ability to accumulate points across a broad range of subjects.

“I also welcome the consideration which will be given to students who perform stronger than pupils from their own school. This change sets to recognise and encourage strong students, and could increase the number of third level students from

disadvantaged backgrounds.“This change in admissions

policy builds on Trinity’s work in promoting third level access from those from under-represented areas and backgrounds through the Trinity Access Programme (TAP). In Ballymun for instance, the successful Trinity Access Programme has strong links with Trinity Comprehensive Secondary School.

“Dublin City University also operates a similar programme; the DCU Access Programme, which has been greatly improving access to third level for over 21 years.

“Access to education remains one of the key factors to breaking the poverty cycle and the changes pioneered by Trinity College have the potential to change how talent is noticed. As youth unemployment remains stubbornly high - any initiative which seeks to open the door for more people into formal education has to be welcomed. I wish Trinity College well in its efforts and look forward to other institutions following suit.”

“New driving licence to be phased in from January 2013”Story continued from page one

THE licence will have a microchip in it which will, from January 2014, contain all the information relating to the licence. The microchip will enable the licence to be read by special card readers which will be managed by the RSA and will be available to the Garda Siochana.

Applications for a licence or learner permit will continue to be made at the local Motor Tax Office but the facility to provide over-the-counter licences will no longer be available after this date. This is because the new format licence will be produced in a specialist facility, because of the card’s high-level security features, and posted out to the applicant.

In addition to the introduction of the new licence, licence delivery will also be centralised when the Road Safety Authority (RSA) becomes the national licensing authority in January. Motor Tax Offices will continue to deliver the service until September; after that,

licences will be delivered by the RSA under the banner of the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS).

Following a decision made by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Mr. Leo Varadkar TD, the fees for driving licenses and learner permits will increase from the 1st of January; this fee increase will be the first since 1989. A new driving license or a renewal will cost €55, all learner permits will cost €35 and the over 70’s driving license will remain free.

Mr. Noel Brett, CEO, Road Safety Authority said, “among its key benefits are that it is more durable, convenient and less susceptible to fraud, but it will also act as a key road safety tool to keep those who are illegally driving a vehicle off our roads. Centralising the licensing service means that from January, the RSA will now have full responsibility for road safety, driver education, training, testing, licensing and vehicle roadworthiness.”

As all old paper licences are valid for a maximum of 10 years, they will be replaced on a phased basis as they expire; meaning that by 2023, everyone in Ireland should have a new plastic card licence. All other licences will remain valid until their expiry date.

Licenses issued from the 19th January will also be subject to changes to licensing rules as part of the EU Directive, the most significant of which is that licences for trucks and buses will now last for five years instead of the current ten years. There are also changes to motorcycle licensing categories.

The card can also record your desire to be an organ donor. The licence will contain a certain code that will make medical practitioners aware of your intention. However in keeping with the current legal position your next of kin will be consulted in the event of any decision of this nature.

BieberFever gone too far? #Cut4Bieber

#CUTFORBIEBER began trending worldwide after Justin Bieber was photographed holding a mysterious cigarette in a hotel room in California on January 2. The young singer was snapped smoking the suspicious cigarette; which looks a lot like a joint, while hanging out with friends. The pictures were leaked a couple of days later and sparked the horrifying #cutforbieber fiasco.

After the pictures were released some irresponsible tweeter pranksters set up dummy accounts to start the self-mutilating campaign. @brittanyscrapma tweeted “You stop using drugs and

we’ll stop cutting. You make the world meaningless and we’ve lost hope”.

Shortly after #cutforbieber began trending disturbing pictures of alleged Bieber fans covered in blood with slashed wrists or their forearms destroyed with cuts started appearing on the popular social media site Twitter. Some are clearly faked but others are unnervingly realistic which casts a shadow of doubt over weather or not the young bliebers are taking this campaign seriously or as a joke.

Even if this ‘campaign’ to stop Bieber from taking drugs is just a sick joke that’s

gone too far it’s still sick and makes a mockery of the real problem people have with self-harm.

So far Bieber and his team have ignored the whole thing, but fellow singer and friend Miley Cyrus spoke out tweeting “#cutforbieber? Cutting is NOT something to joke about. There are people who are actually suffering from self-harm, this is so disrespectful.” Self-harm is no laughing matter, many young adults suffer with this addiction and this trend is harmful and unnecessary. We can only hope the people involved will be shut down and the horrifying pictures removed.

New Trinity admissions pilot will broaden access

Written by Fiona Delaney

WHILE intruder alarms and CCTV cameras may act as deterrents, they do not prevent burglars from entering our homes and with an average of more than 400 burglaries per week occurring in Dublin and surrounding counties, it means we are experiencing considerably more burglaries than most other European capitals. At this point therefore it makes sense for us to look at what other countries are doing differently to help manage their own home-burglary issues.

Throughout most of continental Europe and the UK the term Target Hardening is well known and is given priority over intruder alarms. This means focusing on the physical security i.e. the critical strength and resistance provided by our locks, doors,

windows, and glazing. As we improve the strength of these important elements we harden the security at the main entry points of our homes, and make it more difficult for the burglar to gain entry. Evidence shows that when the criminal has to spend more than a few minutes attempting to open a lock or a door, he will soon move on to find a softer target, of which you can be assured there are hundreds located within the vicinity of your own home.

Most of the locks, doors and windows used in Ireland are considered ‘unfit for purpose’ in most other European countries and thieves targeting houses and businesses in Ireland know this. As was pointed out recently on Joe Duffy’s Liveline as many as eight out of ten houses in Ireland contain front, back and patio doors with flawed locks that can be penetrated in seconds and this is a major reason for our burglary epidemic. Therefore the single most important bit of advice I can give you today is to have these locks replaced as soon as possible. Derailing

Patio doors to gain access is also favoured by criminals and there is a special Zentry Patio Door lock available that prevents this happening. I recommend the use of locks that have attained certification to the preferred Garda standard which is called Secured by Design, and be careful of who you get to fit the locks, as only a handful of locksmiths operating in the Dublin area use these as they are a little more expensive.

Getting this element of security right is critical to all homeowners, so ask the supplier to provide you with the manufacturer’s written evidence that the locks will prevent snapping, bumping, picking and drilling and are passed by Secured by Design.

Ciarán O’Connell is a Security Consultant and Director at Burglarybusters and is also a trained mental-health counselor. Ciarán is available to provide you with a ‘free of charge’ security survey of your home. Starting today Ciarán will write a regular column in this newspaper.

Slash & Burn of Garda numbers continues

FIANNA Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins has called on the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter to immediately clarify reports that he plans to slash an additional 1,000 Garda personal from the force this year.

Deputy Collins described the reports in the Irish Independent as ‘extremely worrying’ at a time of increased crime levels in communities across the country.

“Minister Shatter is single-handedly dismantling a Garda force that took generations to build,” Deputy Collins said.

“It seems it is not enough for him to shut down an additional 100 Garda stations this year and refuse to lift the ban on recruitment at a time of dwindling Garda numbers, now the Minister wants to cut an extra 1,000 personnel this year. This is a drain of ability and experience and if it goes ahead, it would bring Garda numbers to the lowest level in a decade.

“People will find it shocking that this is the Minister’s response to increased rates of burglaries, thefts

and retail crime in communities across the country, as well as fears of an escalation in gangland crime and dissident activity. People also struggle to understand how Minister Shatter can justify recruiting hundreds of extra personnel in the Defence Forces while he waters down An Garda Síochána, allowing Garda numbers to fall to dangerously low levels.

“I have been concerned for some time about Minister Shatter’s refusal under repeated questioning to commit to maintaining a basic level of personnel in An Garda Síochána. These latest revelations are further evidence that Alan Shatter has gone from being the law and order opposition spokesperson to a deeply destructive Minister for Justice who the GRA have already described as being ‘soft on crime’.

“Minister Shatter cannot dodge this issue any longer. Today’s reports will add to the fear and anxiety felt in many communities at this time, and the Minister must immediately clarify his intentions.”

Racism still looming large in FootballFOOTBALL is no stranger to racism, and even in the 21st century, players, officials and fans globally are still sub-jected to abuse regarding their nation-ality, skin colour religion or ethnicity. Campaigns and networks such as ‘Kick It Out and ‘Football Against Racism in Europe’ established in 1993 and in 1999 respectively have been backed by many high profile fig-ures in the sport such as Sir Alex Fer-guson, and whilst these measures have progressed the issue, events which have conspired over the past few weeks have propelled the issue of racism in football into a major talking point once again. After the Football Asso-ciation’s (FA) decision to hand John Terry a mere four-match suspension following his racial abuse over Anton Ferdinand, several high profile black footballers were outraged by the lenient punishment. Several of these players,

including Anton’s brother Rio Ferdi-nand decided against wearing a ‘Kick It Out’ t-shirt in support of the campaign against racism as a show of frustration against the progress of the campaign.During Manchester United’s 4-2 vic-tory over Stoke City on the 20th of October, in which Rio Ferdinand had refused to wear the ‘Kick it Out’ t-shirt, United’s manager Ferguson described Ferdinand’s decision as “embarrassing for me” and com-menting that “he’ll be dealt with”.The Professional Footballers Associa-tion (PFA) was quick to defend the de-cision of Ferdinand and other player’s decisions to not wear the t-shirt, cit-ing the right of freedom of expression. Clarke Carlisle of PFA has said: “Sir Alex Ferguson is con-tinual in his unwavering support for the Kick It Out campaign which is commendable and what we all want

to see, but you can’t vilify or coerce any individual for making a stand,”“Everyone has a right to free speech – just like you can’t coerce anyone into shak-ing hands, you can’t make somebody wear a T-shirt – although I do personal-ly believe that joining in with the cam-paign is the best way forward,” he said. T-shirts have become some-what symbolic in the Premier League of late. Last season, Liverpool showed their support for Luis Suárez after he received an eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrick Evra by wearing t-shirt which depicted the striker’s face on them. At the end of October, Chel-sea filed a formal complaint to the FA in regards to referee Mark Clat-tenburg, who they accuse of racially abusing two of their players using in-appropriate language during their 3-2 home defeat to Manchester United.

FIANNA Fáil Seanad Leader & Finance Spokesperson Darragh O’Brien has said the drip-feed of information on the valuation and collection of property taxes is adding to the distress of hard-pressed homeowners across the country.

Senator O’Brien commented, “Has the Government learned nothing from its failure to communicate with the public during the household charge fiasco? Now, instead of being upfront with householders about how its new property tax will work, the Government is relying on a series of leaks and briefings to the media behind closed doors.

“The thousands of families across the country, who are deeply concerned about how

they will pay property taxes on a house they can’t afford as it is, deserve more honesty from this Government. Reports that the value of homes will be dictated by the Revenue Commissioners and that self-assessment could lead to challenges from the taxman only add to the concerns of householders, and raise even more questions about the Government’s property tax plan.

“It seems that not only are Fine Gael and Labour intent on taxing the family home while failing to take any meaningful action to tackle the deepening mortgage crisis, they also haven’t learned a thing from the household charge fiasco in terms of the importance of openness and accountability.”

2013 Grand Nationalbetting market takingshape, who are you on?With the jump racing season now well under way, the latest Grand National odds place Seabass, Sunnyhillboy and Join Together at the top of the betting marketOnline sports betting website  BETS  have just released new odds for the 2013 Grand National. Seabass, Sunnyhillboy and Join Together are top of the list, all priced at attractive odds of 16/1.

Horses that have previously raced in the Grand National include Cappa Bleu (25/1), Burton Port (25/1) and Shakalakaboomboom (25/1)

The race will take place on Saturday 6th April 2013 at 16.15 at the famous Aintree racecourse. The race will take place with some minor alterations to certain fences. The changes are a direct result of the high-profile death of

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Synchronised in last years race. Whilst the demise of Synchronised undoubtedly took the shine off the 2012 running, horse racing fans will be hopeful that the recent modifications to Aintree fences will have a positive impact on the post race fatality statistics.

The  2013 Grand National betting  market is likely to be the biggest yet, with over £1 Billion set to be traded via online betting alone. Bets.co.uk spokesperson Paul Speakman said “I’d hesitate to describe the Grand National as being totally recession-proof but it probably is”.

Jobs figures and strong exchequer returns bring promising start to 2013LOCAL Fine Gael TD and Minister of State, Brian Hayes has said that the jobs figures released by Enterprise Ireland bring a promising start to 2013. More than 13,600 new jobs were created by Irish exporting companies last year, representing the highest net gain in jobs in 6 years. The latest exchequer returns also show that the State’s finances are continuing to stabilise.

“The publication of Enterprise Ireland’s end of year results brought a positive start to 2013, and shows that we are making consistent progress on the jobs front. Irish exporting companies created more than 13,600 new jobs in 2012; a net gain of more than 3,800. That’s the highest net gain since 2006. The end of year exchequer figures brought further encouraging news; they show that tax revenues were ahead of targets last year.

“Creating new jobs and bringing our public finances into balance are essential as we tackle our unemployment levels, which remain far too high. The Government has been tasked with completely rebuilding the economy from a broken, failed model, to a sustainable one based on innovation and enterprise. As well as implementing changes to support small, local businesses, we are also determined to help as many companies as possible to expand into

lucrative export markets. “A number of measures have been

implemented as part of the Action Plan for Jobs specifically targeted at helping potential exporters. These include a new Potential Exporters Division within Enterprise Ireland, a new Micro Enterprise Division, a scheme to target international entrepreneurs and another to promote greater female entrepreneurship. This was underlined by an aggressive programme of sixteen Ministerial level trade missions targeting new growth markets for Irish companies.

“It is significant that 73% of the jobs gains have been located in areas outside the Dublin/Mid-Eastern Region. After large job losses in the exporting sector in 2008, 2009 and 2010, these results for 2012 mark a significant improvement in this crucial part of the economy.

“The Taoiseach recently underlined his determination to keep job creation at the top of the political agenda. A special Cabinet meeting on jobs will be held this month, with a particular focus on small and medium enterprises and the domestic economy. The Government will continue to implement a range of measures aimed specifically at job creation, with this year’s Action Plan for Jobs due to be published shortly.

“Irish companies are proving that they have the capacity and the ambition to expand into new markets. For every one job created in an Enterprise Ireland company, an additional job is created in the domestic economy. New jobs were created last year despite the fact that most export markets were in economic difficulty. The global economy should improve in the

year ahead; representing a major opportunity for Irish companies to further expand in 2013. I am confident that the progress shown by Irish companies over the last 12 months can be improved in the year ahead.”

FIANNA Fáil Environment Spokesperson Barry Cowen has said it will come as a relief to older people across the country that the Government has been forced into a u-turn on the ‘incredibly cruel’ cut to the Senior Alert Scheme.

Deputy Cowen said, “This is an admission by the Government that they made a mistake in slashing funding for a scheme that has helped tens of thousands of older people over the years.

“I very much welcome the fact that Minister Phil Hogan has caved into public and political pressure on this matter.  This was an incredibly cruel and potentially dangerous cut, particularly

in the context of the Government’s slash and burn of community garda resources and the increase in burglaries and thefts in many parts of the country.  It would have been completely wrong to take security supports from older people who are already feeling more vulnerable than ever in their homes.

“It comes as a relief that Minister Hogan has heeded advice on this matter. I hope this marks a change in the Minister’s approach and signals a willingness from him to listen and communicate with people on matters of public concern.”

Smoking “rots the brain”claim scientists

ACCORDING to a new survey published by King’s College London, smoking can not only damage your body, but it also damages your brain.

The study, which was conducted using a test group of 8000 people over the age of 50 over an eight -year period, included several cognitive tests which required participants to learn new words or name as many animals as they could in one minute.

The tests also calculated the cardiovascular risk factor of each participant, which in-turn showed that high blood pressure and being overweight had an impact on brain activity, but neither impacted as strongly as smoking.

The cardiovascular risk factor of each participant was calculated using the following information: blood pressure readings which were classified as either normal, borderline-high or high; total cholesterol levels which were classified as either optimal, mildly high or high; body mass index (BMI) classified as either normal, overweight or obese; whether or not people were non-smokers (never smoked or ex-smokers) and smokers (current smokers).

The final risk scores for each participant were calculated using validated measures and were based on information about age, gender,

blood pressure, blood lipids, diabetes and smoking.

Dr. Alex Dregan, one of the leading scientists who was involved in the study, has said: “Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.

“We have identified a number of risk factors which could be associated with accelerated cognitive decline, all of which could be modifiable. We need to make people aware of the need to do some lifestyle changes because of the risk of cognitive decline.”

The Alzheimer’s Society has released a statement agreeing with the findings in this study, stating that they hope its findings will be wake-up call to smokers.

“We all know smoking, a high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a high BMI [Body Mass Index] is bad for our heart. This research adds to the huge amount of evidence that also suggests they can be bad for our head too.

“Eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and not smoking can all make a difference,” they concluded.

Sports capitalgrant welcomed

FINE Gael Dun Laoghaire Deputy, Mary Mitchell O’ Connor TD, has warmly welcomed the Government cash injection into local sports facilities, in the form of the Sports Capital Grant. A total of €26 million was granted by the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Minister Ring TD, to sporting facilities across the country.

“Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown is a significant beneficiary of the grant, receiving in excess of €870,000. The Sports Capital Programme is the main channel of Government support for developing sports facilities and purchasing equipment for sports clubs and organisations across Ireland.

“This is the first round of sports capital funding for four years and demonstrates the Government’s commitment to encouraging more people to take part in sport. The funding is due in part to the Government’s recognition of the alarming rates of obesity in children, teenagers and adults. As a nation, we need to be mindful of the amount of physical activity we engage in. The funding made available under this programme aims to enhance sporting facilities inspire all citizens to become more active and to focus on their health.

“Demand for grant funding was extremely high. A total of 2,170 applications were received; the highest number of applications ever received under the Programme. These applications sought a total of €229 million in funding. It is fair to say that Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown fared extremely well in the allocation of funding and I look forward to seeing the impact the additional funds

will have on local communities.““Ten sports/leisure groups in Dun Laoghaire/

Rathdown have been successful in securing funding under the programme

They are: Cabinteely Park - €25,000

Trinity College Dublin announces new Professorship - Seamus Heaney Professorship in Irish WritingTHE Seamus Heaney Professorship in Irish Writing, named in honour of one of Ireland’s greatest poets and Nobel Laureate, was announced recently by the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

“This is a significant event in writing in Ireland and internationally. Trinity College Dublin is enhancing its extraordinary literary tradition with this new professorship,” the Provost stated on the occasion of the announcement.

The poet, who has a long standing relationship with Trinity, having been an Honorary Fellow since 1998, expressed his delight at his association with the new professorship, which will undoubtedly become one of the most prestigious appointments in Irish academia.

“It was a great honour when Trinity proposed that my name should be associated with the new Professorship in Irish Writing.   The gratitude I feel is all the greater because of my high regard for the work being done in Trinity’s School of English, and my friendship over the years with the writers and scholars who have contributed to the study and practice of Irish writing. I greatly appreciate the generosity of the benefactors, which is clearly underpinned by their special interest in poetry,” said Seamus Heaney.

The new position was generated by several of Trinity’s major donors, including Dr Mark Pigott, KBE, and Dr Martin Naughton, Chair of Glen Dimplex.   “We are very appreciative of their support and strategic vision in developing this appointment,”

Dr Prendergast said. “Trinity is deeply indebted to all of its generous funders who are supporting Trinity’s growing reputation as one of the leading global educational institutions.”

The announcement of the new professorship was made during a read-a-thon of   Paradise Lost   organised by the School of English in aid of charity at which the poet, Seamus Heaney was participating. One of the longest poems in the English language, written by John Milton after he had lost his sight the sponsored reading of the poem was organised to raise money for the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI).The poet Seamus Heaney among many other writers and public figures participated at the read-a-thon lasting all day.

PROVISIONAL road casualty figures for 2012 show that a total of 161 people tragically lost their lives on Irish roads in 2012. This is 25 fewer fatalities compared to 186 deaths last year and 51 fewer deaths compared to 2010 when 212 people lost their lives on the roads.

The third Road Safety Strategy 2007 to 2012, which will be replaced in early 2013 with a new eight year strategy, set a target of reducing road deaths to no more than 252 deaths per annum by the end of 2012. Not only was this target achieved ahead of schedule in 2009, it was significantly surpassed. Since the beginning of 2007 there has been a 56% decrease in road deaths.

Commenting on the release of the provisional figures Mr. Gay Byrne, Chairman, Road Safety Authority said “At the end of 2006 the year before the third Road Safety Strategy was launched, we were losing a life on the road every single day. Six years later and this has dropped to three lives lost every week. So as a result of your actions, the road using public, you are preventing four deaths every week now compared to 2006. While one death is one too many, this is an extraordinary achievement and something of which you should all be very proud. The challenge now is to build on this success. We have three more lives a week to save.”

“We know we can do better because

countries like Sweden, the UK and the Netherlands have done it. The task begins with the development and publication of the new Road Safety Strategy, which will cover the period 2013 to 2020. Key elements of this new strategy will focus on serious injury reduction, tackling repeat road traffic offenders and developing more forgiving roads. While government agencies will work tirelessly to implement this new strategy, ultimately

if we want safer roads only you can get us there.”  RSA Chief Executive, Mr. Noel Brett, paid tribute to the work of the Gardai and Emergency Services, “It is important, as we come to the end of another year, that we acknowledge and thank those on the front line in road safety. The Gardai, Ambulance and Paramedic crews, Fire Brigade personnel, Nurses, Doctors and Carers who are responsible for ensuring we

stay safe on the roads and for caring for those who have been affected by road trauma”.

Commissioner of An Garda Síochána Mr Martin Callinan  said today: “We wish to thank all road users who have made a conscious and positive change to both their attitudes and behaviour on our roads. This change has resulted in another record low in terms of road safety in Ireland. This is evident in particular in our drink driving arrests

which are down for the fifth year in a row, whilst there have been more Garda Mandatory Alcohol Checkpoints in 2012, compared to 2011. In 2007 the rate of detection was approximately 1 in 25, now it’s approximately 1 in 50. This clearly shows increased compliance by responsible members of the public.”

A Lucky couple in Lucan scooped €100,000 in the Christmas Millionaire Raffle draw, held as part of The Gathering festival on New Year’s Eve last.

The happy couple, do not wish to be named, were given their ticket as a present by the lucky wife’s father. The ticket

was purchased on Sunday 23 December 2012 in the Centra store in Griffeen in Lucan.

‘We still can’t believe it. We checked our ticket online on New Year’s Day, about lunchtime. We were laughing that we hadn’t won the top prize of €1,000,000 as we’d been daydreaming of what we

would do if we’d landed the million. But then the numbers matched for the €100,000, and we’re still in shock!’, smiled the happy winner.

‘We’ve no immediate plans for the win. We’re expecting a new baby in the summer so an attic conversion for the expanding family is definite,

and maybe a trip to Disneyland in Paris for the rest of the family in Spring. Oh, and we’re going to pay off our car loan next week; that’s something I’m really looking forward to doing’, she smiled.

Road users thanked as road safety strategy target achieved three years ahead of schedule

Some of the key provisional statistics for 2012 include;• 30% of road deaths were under 25 years of age.• 41% of road deaths occurred on Saturday and Sunday.• The hours between 4pm and 6pm were the most dangerous, with 31

deaths (19%)• The average monthly fatality rate in 2012 was 13 compared to 16 in

2011 and 18 in 2010.• The safest month of the year was November when 8 deaths occurred.• 108 or 67% of those killed on the roads were male.

DVD & BLU RAYLawless(2012)

Lawless is a gangster film based on the historical novel “The Wettest County in the World” by Matt Bondurant and is directed by John Hillcoat (who also directed “The Road”). Lawless stars Shia LaBeouf (Jack Bondurant), Tom Hardy (Forrest Bondurant) and Jason Clarke (Howard Bondurant) as the three ‘indestructible’ Bondurant brothers who run a successful moonshine business in Franklin County, Virginia during Prohibition in the United States. The Bondurant’s moonshine business becomes threatened by a new deputy Charlie Rakes played by the brilliant Guy Pearce, and other authorities who are looking for a cut of the profits. This forces the youngest of the Bondurant brothers Jack( LaBeouf) to step up to the plate with the help of friend Cricket (Dane Dehaan).

Shia LaBeouf shows his acting credentials as he holds his own against the likes of Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman. Gary Oldman plays a small but memorable part as gangster Floyd Banner. While Tom Hardy, once again steals the show and is excellent as the older brother Forrest Bondurant. Lawless also stars Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Tree of Life) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre).

Lawless has a stellar cast and is an excellent film, which is enjoyable to watch. If you are a fan of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” which is based during the Prohibition era and focuses on the lives of the rich, you may enjoy the different perspective of bootlegging that Lawless offers. Lawless is rated 18 and is available to rent or buy now.

Business

83 Jobs lostin BallymountDUBLIN South West TD, Seán Crowe, has expressed his dismay over the loss of 83 jobs in Johnson Brothers in Ballymount.

Management in the firm called employees to a meeting and informed them of a “significant development within the company” with new arrangements necessitating the loss of 83 jobs in its warehouse and transport operations.

It is now proposed to outsource this work to an external company. Other operations in the company which employ 200 staff are not affected by today’s announcement.Deputy Seán Crowe TD said:

“These job losses and the scale of them are a dreadful way to start the New Year for all those workers & their families.

“This particular jobs rationalisation process seems to be due to a reduction in the volume of goods transported by the company, and reflects on the poor state of our domestic economy.

“While the haulage industry will receive a rebate on diesel from 1 July 2013 under Budget 2013, this particular measure seems to have come too late for many of the workers in Johnston Brothers.

“Thankfully 200 staff will be retained by the company, but the loss of 83 jobs

is a significant amount, especially in Dublin South West which is an area experiencing high unemployment.

“The government continues to spin that the worst is over and the economy is recovering but there is little sign of that in Dublin South West or in the wider domestic economy, which is continuing to shrink rapidly.

“The government needs to invest in stimulus packages which will not only save jobs but also the conditions to create them.”

IDA Ireland Client CompaniesCreated 12,722 New Jobs in 2012IDA Ireland, the Irish Government agency responsible for attracting foreign direct investment, has reported the creation of 12,722 new jobs during 2012. IDA client companies added a total of 6,570 new net jobs, the IDA’s third consecutive year of growth in net employment. Job losses at IDA client companies were the lowest for a decade.

In total there were 145 individual investments, with 66 (over 40%) from companies coming to Ireland for the first time. The IDA client base in Ireland now employs 152,785 people, a level last recorded before the global financial crisis began in 2008. Net job creation rose to 6,570 from 5,934 last year.

Among the biggest investments were Apple,

PayPal, Northern Trust, EA Games, Fidelity, SAP, Amgen, Mylan, Cisco, Arvato, Allergan and Eli Lilly.  A notable feature of 2012 was the wide range of green field investments coming to Ireland, including Clearstream (part of Deutsche Bourse), Hubspot, Dropbox, Nextag, Aspen and Nuance.

IDA Ireland has just completed the third year of its five year Horizon 2020 strategy and the latest results put the organisation ahead of target in meeting its goal of creating 62,000 direct jobs by 2014 from 640 new investments. Over the course of the first three years (2010-2012) IDA has secured 419 investments and has delivered gross job gains of over 36,000.

“When we launched the Action Plan for Jobs last year we set some very ambitious targets for new foreign investment for 2012. On that basis, I am delighted that the results from the IDA confirm that we have surpassed the job creation figures for 2011 and have secured the highest net job creation numbers in a decade. These investments are a superb vote of confidence in the Irish economy and the Irish people” Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD

Limerick Man Wins Irish Christmas Tree Throwing Championship

Pictured: John O`Dea pictured with the winners trophy

The fundraising event, which is based on age-old lumberjack traditions and commonplace across Germany and Austria, saw members of the public compete to determine the Irish distance record for throwing a standard 1.5 metre tree.

John O’Dea from Cappamore in Co. Limerick secured a new Irish record and the Championship title after he threw a Christmas tree a distance of 10.2 metres, beating fellow competitor Sean Jaffray’s (Scotland) effort by just 0.3 metres. Norah Murphy won the ladies title with her throw of 6.3m, while the Under 12 section was won by Soran Drayas (9.2m) and Aoife O’Gara (7.86 m).

All proceeds raised during the contest, which was organised by Ennis Town Council and Clare County Council, went to the Clare Branch of Cystic Fibrosis.

According to Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer, Clare County Council: “We were delighted with the turnout at the weekend. Competitors hailed from as far afield as Oregan, Ontario, Slovakia, Scotland, Brisbane, and all over Ireland. Disposing of the Christmas tree is often an arduous

task for many so this event allowed people to do so in style.”

Kieran McCarthy, Chairperson of the Clare Branch of Cystic Fibrosis commented: “We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our

organisation at the weekend. The funds raised will complement the generous donations already received during 2012. All money raised will be invested locally in the delivery of services, which include sponsoring

FULL DIAGNOSTICS

January 2013

WHEN Toyota set about creating the GT86, the guiding principle was that it should be a car devoted to the pure passion of driving. It’s an ethos that has helped earn the sports coupe worldwide acclaim, and now the honour of being named TopGear magazine’s Car of the Year 2012.

In a clean-sweep it was also Jeremy Clarkson’s personal Car of the Year and the TopGear Coupe of the Year.

In taking the titles, GT86 confirmed its status as one of the most exciting new models of 2012. More than that, it’s priced to be affordable for many drivers, rather than being an exotic supercar reserved for the ultra-rich.

Charlie Turner, TopGear editor, said: This is a fantastic

achievement, for a car to win a TopGear Award is recognition of a truly exceptional vehicle. Only the remarkable are considered for a TopGear Award and this year the GT86 has proved to be the stand-out machine.

The award follows on from GT86’s success in the magazine’s Speed Week contest, featured in the August issue, in which it emerged the overall victor against competition from such exotic machinery as the McLaren MP4-12C, Porsche 911 Carrera S and Lotus Exige S.

At the time, Oliver Marriage, Motoring Editor, expressed how, although slower, GT86 was more enjoyable to drive than more rapid rivals: “Acceleration

is fun, but the noise is as important as the kick in the back, and I would rather spend 30 seconds wringing the GT86 up to speed than three seconds being pummelled by the McLaren. You have more time to enjoy it, you feel more like part of the process.”

In the same TopGear report, Senior Writer Sam Philip added: For driving thrills, this is my sort of performance car. Good steering, nice crisp gearchange, revvy engine. You can find its limits, slide it around, without fear of being inadvertently deposited in a loch…”GT86 becomes the second Toyota to earn TopGear’s top award, the Aygo city car having shared the Car of the Year title with the Bugatti Veyron in 2005.

IN keeping with its corporate design as revised in 2011, Czech carmaker ŠKODA is successively changing existing model lines over to its new logo. The Fabia and Roomster will now become the third and fourth ŠKODA models to receive the new logo, the ŠKODA lettering at the rear and the model designation in a the new typeface.

The logo appears in several locations both on the outside and inside the cars: on the bonnet, for instance, at the rear, on the wheels’ central covers and or on the wheel trims, respectively, on the steering wheel, the engine covering and on the vehicle key.

Another optical innovation in the ŠKODA Fabia and ŠKODA Roomster is the new typeface for the model designation on the boot cover. Engine and additional designations such as TSI, TDI, “GreenLine” or “vRS” will also take the new typeface.

In addition, the Fabia and the Roomster will henceforth spot the ŠKODA lettering at the rear, a first for these models.

Compared to the existing logo, the new winged arrow in chrome and black appears significantly fresher and more modern as designers have focused on the essential. The winged arrow is precisely contoured and stands out in chrome on a black-matte background framed by a fine chrome line. The current laurel wreath and integrated ŠKODA lettering will no longer be included in the new logo.

ŠKODA’s comprehensive revision of its corporate design underscores the brand’s entry into a new growth phase two years ago. By the year 2018, ŠKODA aims to raise its worldwide sales to at least 1.5 million per year. The brand’s new look has a modern, precise and fresh appearance and clearly brings out the brand’s new strength.

Step-By-Step Guide: Crazy Egg Carton SpecsFind Craftea Parties on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/Crafteaparties Email [email protected]

What you need:Egg Carton ScissorsPipe Cleaners Decorations – paint, glitter, beads, fuzzy balls, feathers – anything you like! Glue or Sellotape

Instructions:1) Did you know that the parts of the egg carton which hold each individual egg are called ‘dimples’? Well, the dimples are the parts of the carton which you’ll use make this kooky craft – who’d have ever thought egg cartons could be so exciting!

2) With an adults help, cut the bottom out of the egg carton and cut around 2 of the dimples from the carton making sure to keep the 2 dimples attached. This part becomes the rims of the glasses

3) Pierce the middle of each of the dimples with a pencil (there is usually an indent in each holder which will guide you or if not, just aim for the middle!) and then cut out the eye hole big enough to see out of.

4) Cut a small slit into the side of the dimples about 1cm from the bottom and thread a pipe cleaner through each slit. Tie this end back of the pipe cleaner back around itself so the pipe cleaner is securely attached to the dimple. The end of the pipe cleaner is the part which will go around each ear so if you curl the ends so the will stay around your ears.

5) The hilarious part begins when you get creative painting and decorating your crazy specs. You can paint them into frog eyes, decorate them in beads, gems or glitter with some glue or add feathers and fuzzy balls to really make them stand out.
