In a recently published comprehensive set of burglary statistics, Tallaght has topped the poll as the burglary capital of Ireland. “The recession and high unemployment com-bined with drugs problems in the area are used as excuses for the high burglary rate. How-ever it is also related to Garda numbers and the extent of policing resources available. The Irish Times has reported Garda sources saying that “some neighbourhoods in south Dublin and other mainly middle-class parts of the State have seen burglary rates higher than general crime rates in those areas”. However, residents may be relieved to hear that Garda sources have also revealed to the Irish times that the intense focus of the force’s new dedi-

cated anti-burglary drive – “Operation Fiacla” – has already begun to drive burglary rates down in some areas over the past six months. In The Southside People, it was revealed that the specific aim of “Operation Fialca” will be to focus on identifying and targeting mobile gangs involved in burglaries around the coun-try, in order to disrupt their activities and bring them before the courts. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice was quoted in the South-side People as having said “specific burglary re-lated initiatives are being implemented in each Garda region in support of Operation Fiacla”.

“This is a coordinated, intelligence- led strate-gy designed to maximise organisational resources in order to proactively target prolific offenders.” “Similarly, the Garda national model of community policing plays a key part in re-sponding to crime by taking into account and responding to local conditions and needs. “In this regard the Gardaí continue to work closely with communities to enhance communi-ty safety in a wide range of local forums, includ-ing through partnership programmes such as Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch.”

Renault callstime on CullenpartnershipCelebrity businessman Bill Cul-len is no longer a Renault car deal-er, according to the latest reportsCullen’s long-time association with the car manufacturer has finally ended af-ter the last of his garages in the Dub-lin showrooms at Airside in Swords and Liffey Valley both lost the rights to sell the cars at the end of August. Prior to 2007, Cullen held the national fran-chise for Renault, before it was taken back un-der control by the French firm. After being taken back under the guidance of its French parent company, Renault’s sales improved vastly thanks to a large marketing blitz and the introduction of the government’s used car scrappage scheme. Neither Ireland’s Renault base or Bill Cul-len Motor Group offered any reasons for

the split, however insiders have suggest-ed the split was both amicable and mutual. Earlier in the summer, two of Cullen’s other car dealerships in Ennis and Gal-way were forced to close their doors which resulted in the loss of almost 30 jobs.

The Bill Cullen Motor Group has been hit hard by the recession, as new car sales nation-wide have fallen a further 9 per cent on last year according to SIMI (Society of Irish Motor In-dustry). 75,000 new cars are expected to be sold by the end of 2012, in comparison with 90,000 at

the end of 2011 and 151,000 at the end of 2008. It has not been the best year for the Irishman, as earlier on this year TV3 pulled the plug on the Irish version of ‘The Apprentice’ series after a dip in ratings. Cullen had fronted the show from 2008 up until its final series at the start of 2012. Cullen released a statement earlier in the sum-mer regarding his business, saying he was happy with their current status despite recent closures. “I’m pleased to announce that my dealerships are still firmly in the motor business in my 56th year of giving the Irish motorist the best sales and service experience in the industry,” he said. Having started his career as a messenger boy with Waldron’s Ford Dealership in 1977, Cullen managed to rise to the top of the mo-toring industry just nine years later, head-ing the very same dealership and becoming the largest distributor of Ford cars in Ireland.

In the run up to this year’s National Men-tal Healthcare conference, it was re-vealed that a 30% per cent increase of mental health issues in Irish chil-dren has been recorded in recent years. According to irishpressrelase.ie, the confer-ence organisers claim that the recession has “caused a surge in the numbers of Irish Children suffering from social dysfunction, withdrawal, depression and various mental health issues” with the numbers of those coming forward for treatment in frontline clinics in the past two years seeing a 30% increase. The rise in mental health issues in chil-dren is believed to be an effect of the recession on Irish homes and families. Although the most obvi-ous effect of the recession has been stress on those providing for themselves and their families, it has been suggested that this has had a direct effect on the mental health of Irish children, which may often be overlooked. Conference Chairman Dr Ian Gar-gan said “in a recession, the stress experienced by

children tends to increase significantly... [we] are beginning to see a “corresponding escalation” be-tween the economic down fall and the increase of mental health issues among our youth. The Irish Ex-aminer has also noted how the rise has been recorded by “Imagine Health private clinics” as well as be-tween “20 and 30 psychologists in the public sector”.

Dr Ian Gargan told the Irish Examiner that it is easy to see how some parents may miss the signs. “It’s difficult for parents to handle eve-rything. They’re doing their best, keeping their head down and trying to get through the difficult times... it’s far more difficult to be aware of and open your mind to the possibility of social dysfunc-tion with their children”. He also warned; “it’s im-portant to realise that there could be something

more sinister and serious which could be a threat.” “However, the good news is that new and more effective treatments aimed specifically at children are being brought to the fore all the time, often developed and pioneered here in Ireland where many aspects of treatment are approaching world class. The challenge now is to make practi-tioners and parents aware of these new options.” It has been suggested by Dr Gargan that we need to start taking a different approach to the men-tal health welfare of our children. “Children have quite a different treatment requirement to adults and Ireland’s challenge is to find new and relevant ways of treating our children’s mental health”. The confer-ence taking place this month will be dealing solely with this issue, under the theme: “The Assessment and Treatment of Children and Young People: Providing an Excellent Future”. The event will be held at Dub-lin’s Burlington Hotel on Thursday September 27th

Sinn Féin Councillors are tabling an emergency motion in response to the decision of the Minister for Environ-ment, Community and Local Gov-ernment Phil Hogan to slash funding for the Council based on the level of Household Charge collection to date.

Sinn Féin Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha, chairperson of the Council’s Finance Committee, said:

“In 2011 Dublin City Council was allo-cated €60.2 million from the Local Govern-ment Fund which is disbursed centrally by the Department of Environment, Commu-nity and Local Government. In Budget 2012 this was reduced to €54.8 million. Now the Council has been told by Minister Hogan’s Department that this is further reduced to €50.1 million. And the minister has directly linked the reduction to the level of collec-tion of the Household Charge in Dublin City.

“This is an attack by the Fine Gael/Labour Government on local services for the citizens and communities of Dublin City and of local authorities across the State. Minister Hogan has doggedly persisted with the inequitable and uncollectable Household Charge, de-spite the huge level of non-payment. Now Council services are being punished by the Government for its own inequity and in-eptitude in trying to impose this unjust tax.

“It is outrageous for a minister to slash the funding for local government in mid-year, significantly reducing the allocation sig-nalled at the start of the year. It typifies the slash and burn approach of this Government.

“Sinn Féin is tabling an emergency motion at the monthly meeting of Dublin City Council.

‘In light of the impending financial crisis facing Dublin City Council and local authori-ties throughout this State, Dublin City Council calls on the Minister for Environment, Com-

munity and Local Government Phil Hogan TD to reverse the cuts in the Local Govern-ment Fund and restore adequate funding for local democracy and the provision of Council services to our citizens and communities. We deplore the Circular from the Minister’s De-partment to all local authorities announcing further reductions in the Local Government Fund and linking reductions of funding for individual Councils, including Dublin City Council, to the level of collection of the ineq-uitable and uncollectible Household Charge.

We call for the replacement of the House-hold Charge with reformed, equitable taxa-tion based on ability to pay and we warn against the imposition of a further un-just charge based on the market value of homes and without regard to ability to pay.

Dublin South West TD Sean Crowe has condemned a recent rise in racial Graffiti been sprayed around the Tallaght district. South Dublin County Council where praised by Crowe after they promptly sent out an anti-graffiti team to remove the racist graffiti which was sprayed up outside the Shamrock Rovers stadium. Thousands of football fans which of-ten include families and young children visit this stadium on a weekly basis. This location of choice to spray is literally rubbing it in. Deputy Crowe said: “I was notified that racist graffiti was drawn onto the exterior walls of Tallaght Stadium and I informed the Environment Department of South Dublin County Coun-cil of the exact nature of these slogans. “I encourage all residents to be vigilant against all forms of racism in Tallaght and to inform South Dublin County Council and An Garda Síochána if they notice any more racist graffiti. We must all work together to ensure Tal-

laght continues to be a safe and welcoming area to people of all ethnicities, races and religions.”

Anti-Social graffiti gangs appear to be on the rise. Along the Red Luas line, particularly com-ing up to St. James stop, Graffiti -wars in several languages litters the walls. Graffiti artists usu-ally work in a stealthy manner and mainly leave their mark while most of us are well asleep. Saying this anybody caught in the act will be fined up to €400 and risk been imprisoned. South Dublin County Council and deputy Crowe are working hard to tackle the sneaky graffiti culprits. Everybody is trying hard to recover from this recession and Tallaght is

working hard to bring more business to the area. The addition of the football stadium and IMC Cinema are drawing thousands of sports fans and shoppers alike to the region.Deputy Crowe continued: “It is not yet clear who carried out this de-plorable act, but their choice of Tallaght Sta-dium is particularly appalling. Since the sta-dium opened its doors to the public in 2009 it has been a fantastic amenity for all residents of Tallaght and South Dublin County in gen-eral. Members from every ethnic, racial and religious background have been welcomed into the stadium to enjoy all the sporting and cultural events which have been hosted there. “I personally know that Shamrock Rov-ers Football Club have been to the forefront of campaigns to remove all forms of rac-ism from sport and within the Tallaght com-munity, and is an active member in the Show Racism The Red Card campaign.

A WALK INTHE PARK

South Dublin County Council have installed 131 pieces of Outdoor ex-ercise equipment in Parks across South Dublin including Tymon Park, Glendown park, Rathcoole Park, Cherryfield Park and Kingswood. Councillor, Éamonn Walsh has welcomed the proposal to install out-door gym-exercise equipment in his Tallaght Central constituency. ‘Beechfield Park has been a long neglected park in the Council area however since my election two years ago, significant improve-ments have been made. The decision to in-stall outdoor exercise equipment for young and old on the 30 year old disused play-ground is a great advance and a welcome addition to this park’s facility’, Walsh says.Similar facilities are to be provided in the same constituency in Greenhills Park, Glen-down Park, Tymon Park and Kingswood Park.

‘I have spoken at several Council meet-ings stressing the importance of preserving our public sport and playground facilities in this recession against vandalism and neglect and that for health – both physi-cal and mental- it was essential that we get all our citizens –young, old, working and unemployed to get exercising for their well-being. Type 2 diabetes especially among young children is a huge worry for us all. I will continue to urge the Council in

their endeavours to promote a healthy lifestyle which will reduce pressures on the health service now and into the fu-ture and which will reduce work ab-senteeism and the consequent loss of productivity in our battling economy’. The exercise areas look to be a big hit in the parks, the equipment is been used daily by parents and kids which is most definitely going to benefit to help fight the battle of obe-sity which seems to be on the rise in Ireland. It is now confirmed that Obesity is high up there as one of Irelands lead-ing health issues. Yoga, Jogging, walking and swimming are light activities that can help fight this problem. Light activity is known to boost your immune system, re-lease happy endorphins and release stress. Monkey see, monkey do. Many coun-tries look to the west and see the land of dreams…the Americans. We like to imi-tate how they live as they are the most powerful country in the world. Many big food chains have swam across the pond and we are now eating how they eat.

Some 60% of Irish people are over-weight. Shockingly over 300,000 children are overweight , that figure is rising by 10,000 annually. Research also revealed that 23% of partners have told their other half they needed to lose weight.

The stylish streets of Dublin came alive last week as Dublin’s Fash-ion Festival took centre stage from the 6th to the 9th of September. The festival, which is run by Dublin City BID (Business Improvement District), is in its 3rd year and primarily covers the ‘Creative Quarter’ of Dublin which includes Wicklow Street, Drury Street, Georges Street, Lower Stephen’s Street, Exchequer Street and South William Street. The four day schedule was jam-packed with a whole host of hip and trendy events for all ages on both sides of Dublin’s city centre, with Irish fashionistas coming out in their droves to make the festival the most unforgettable one yet. On-street fashion shows kicked off festival proceedings on Thurs-day the 6th. Both Henry Street and Grafton Street were buzzing from morning until late afternoon as the fabulous festivities kicked into full gear. Brown Thomas held their very own ‘Vogue Night Out’ just hours later, as customers were invited to come in and shop well past closing time, with special offers and complimentary drinks also on offer in-store.

TV personality and former model Amanda Byram acted as this year’s ‘face

of the festival’. She not only launched this year’s festival in Dublin’s Westin Hotel on the 24th of July, but also made her long-awaited return to the Irish modelling scene by taking part in the Creative Quarter fashion show outside the Powerscourt Centre, which was the festival’s highlight on Friday the 5th. The Creative Quarter fashion show was styled by owner of 1st Option modelling agency Jules Fallon, and had some of the biggest models on the Irish fashion scene strutting their stuff down Dublin’s South William Street. During the weekend of the festival, it was the city centre’s biggest shop-ping centre’s turns to get in on the fashion action. Sonya Mohlich headed the ‘Strike-a-Pose’ event in the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre on Saturday the 7th. Members of the public were invited to get their picture taken in one of the designated photo booths to show off their trendy threads and edgy poses. The Ilac Centre joined in the fun as they hosted their ‘Fash Dash’ event on the very same day. An online competition was run in the weeks prior to the event to find four talented upcoming stylists to face-off in a fashion frenzy. The finalists will be given €200 a piece to dash around the Ilac Shopping Cen-tre and put together the best outfit possible within the financial constraints. On Sunday the 9th - the final day of the festival – the kids came out to play as a whole host of children’s events were being held around the southside of the city. A mini pink catwalk, dress-up box and games for all ages were just some of the entertainment on offer on Dublin’s South Anne Street. Children of all ages came out to show off what the next generation of fashion could look like in Dublin in years to come.

A Sinn Féin survey of unemployment lev-els in the Clondalkin local electoral area has revealed a shocking 40% of people are out of work. The survey, conducted in July, surveyed 400 houses in all parts of the Clondalkin ward. Unemployment was highest in North Clondalkin at 52%, followed by Bawnogue at 44%. Signifi-cantly Clondalkin Village, St Johns and Cherrywood combined had an unem-ployment rate of 38%. The full details of the survey are attached to this e-mail. Sinn Féin Dublin Mid-West representative Eoin Ó Broin has described the results as ‘shocking’ and ‘a wakeup call to the Gov-ernment to start taking the Clondalkin un-employment crisis seriously.’ÓBroin said: ‘In July Sinn Féin undertook a survey of un-

employment in the Clondalkin local elec-toral area. 400 houses were surveyed, pro-portionately distributed across the ward. ‘The results revealed a shocking 40% of people are out of work. Unemployment was highest in North Clondalkin at 52%, followed by Bawnogue at 44%. Significantly Clondalkin Village, St Johns and Cherrywood combined had an unem-ployment rate of 38%. Newcastle, Brittas and Rathcoole had an unemployment rate of 33%. ‘While the state wide unemployment fig-ure is almost 15% the figures for all parts of Clondalkin are genuinely disturbing. They reveal an unemployment crisis far deeper than most other areas of the country. ‘These results must act as a wake-up call to the Government. Clondalkin, and ar-eas like it, urgently need targeted Govern-

ment intervention to get people back to work. ‘Sinn Féin has repeatedly called for the establish-ment of a jobs task force for the area. This would bring all the key statutory, community and busi-ness leaders together to design and implement a strategy for getting local people back to work. ‘For such a task force to work it needs to have targeted Government investment in job crea-tion. The people of Clondalkin do not need a talking shop. They need a body with the po-litical will to act the financial resources to put credible job creation plans into action. ‘From September Sinn Féin will start a series of meetings with community and business leaders in an attempt to put a greater focus on the need for targeted investment in job creation in CLon-dalkin. Without this the unemployment crisis highlight by the Sinn Féin survey will get worse.’

Clondalkin Unemployment Hits 40%

B o r d G a i sRaise Prices

Bord Gais customers are in for a harsh winter as a price rise of up to 8.5% will come into effect in October. 400,000 customer swill once again feel the strain of the hike in price which will add €70 onto the average household gas bill. This time last year Bord Gáis, which con-trols 69% of the residential gas market, got ap-proval for a 22% increase for residential gas prices.

The commission said that since the sum-mer the price of gas in euro terms has continued to rise. It said the value of the euro, which has decreased against sterling over the last year, is a key driver on gas prices as Ireland purchases virtually all of its gas prices from Britain.

In addition, it said that transmission and distribu-tion tariffs for the forthcoming year have also risen. The regulator added that the increase may cause problems

for many consumers given the economic circumstances, but said that wholesale gas costs are something Ireland has no control over.Citing the same increases in costs, Airtricity has said its gas prices will also increase in the near future. Both Electric Ireland and Flogas have said they are reviewing their prices.Age Action has described the price in-crease as “a huge blow to many older people”.It said: “The continuing problem of energy poverty must be taken seriously by the government who must guar-antee that no further cuts to either the Household Ben-efits Package or the Fuel Allowance will be considered.”

A series of meetings have taken place as part of an in depth review, an-nounced following incidents at the Phoe-nix Park concert on the 7th July 2012.

An Garda Síochána and MCD Pro-ductions, continue to work closely to-gether to address the issues identified and acknowledged in the course of such review, and indeed both parties suc-cessfully implemented a number of re-sponse measures at the recent series of concerts held at Marley Park, Dublin.

The response to the enhanced polic-ing and security measures put in place for such Marley Park concerts, by both concertgoers and the public alike, was extremely positive and such enhanced measures were well received by patrons.Between 5th July and 25th Au-gust 2012 over 170,000 people at-tended the six combined Phoe-nix Park & Marlay Park concerts. An Garda Siochana and MCD Pro-ductions wish to acknowledge the good behaviour and cooperation of those who attended such events.

It should be noted that 67,500 peo-ple (combined attendance figure) who

attended the Electronic Dance Music concerts by David Guetta Marley Park (24th August) and Swedish House Ma-fia Phoenix Park (7th July) the vast ma-jority 99.5% of whom were extremely well behaved as can be clearly seen on Youtubefootage. The 0.5 % who showed no respect for authority, other concert goers or indeed themselves need to re-alise that anti social behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.

Despite the considerable efforts of An Garda Síochána and MCD Productions who undertook an extensive security operation at the Swedish House Mafia event at Phoenix Park, this very small percentage of 0.5% of individuals intent on causing trouble did engage in anti-social behaviour on the 7th July 2012.

An Garda Síochána and MCD con-demn all acts of anti-social behaviour and will continue to work together to minimise the risk of a reoccurrence of such behaviour, and to develop further robust protocols regarding procedures, and to fully implement the lessons which are being learned by both parties from this indepth review, to ensure a safe se-cure and enjoyable environment, for all concertgoers attending future events.

In this regard, a number of further progress meetings will take place.

Communications Minister, Mr. Pat Rabbitte, T.D., recently launched “Delivering a Con-nected Society – A National Broadband Plan for Ireland” which will facilitate the provi-sion of high speed broadband to every home and business in the State over the lifetime of the Government. The plan is focussed on ensuring internet speeds for Irish consum-ers that are much faster than those gener-ally available today. The plan is the result of detailed engagement with stakeholders including the telecommunications industry. National Broadband Plan Targets:

70Mbps - 100Mbps to more than half of the population by 2015; · At least 40Mbps, and in many cases much faster speeds, to at least a further 20% of the population and potentially as much as 35% around smaller towns and villages; and · A minimum of 30Mbps for every remaining home and business in the country – no matter how rural or remote.

Launching the plan at the Croke Park Conference Centre this morning Minister Rabbitte said “I want everyone in Ireland to have access to at least 30mbps download speeds no matter how rural their home or

business. In addition I’m setting a higher target of at least 40mbps for many areas outside the cities. “Despite the pressure on Government finances we will invest public funds so as to make sure more thinly populated areas are not left behind. Internet connec-tivity is now as important for both employment and society as electricity has been for the last 60 years.

“We will also do everything in our power to facilitate commercial investment so that speeds of up to 100Mbps are offered to as many households as possible. Many urban homes can already access that sort of speed but we want to get the regulatory environment right, to strip away barriers to private sector investment and to encourage demand for higher band-with services.

“These are dramatic increases in speeds – par-ticularly for those outside urban centres who often can only access 1Mbps or 2Mbps today. The faster speeds will come from ongoing industry investment, the release, this year, of spectrum for 4G mobile services and from State investment to address mar-ket failure. Notwithstanding the constraints imposed on the exchequer at present, Government will inter-vene where – but only where – it is evident that the market will not deliver. Ireland’s population is more broadly dispersed than that of many other countries so reaching the target will require State investment to encourage the private sector to offer services

which would not otherwise make commercial sense.

The Plan outlines measures to facilitate the de-livery of broadband speeds of between 70 and 100 megabits per second (Mbps) on a commercial ba-sis, to approximately 50% of the population. The Plan also announces the Government’s intention to develop an intervention to deliver minimum speeds of between 30 and 40 Mbps to the other 50% of the population which would not be achieved on a com-mercial basis, thus ensuring that minimum levels of high speed broadband services are accessible to all. Implementation of this plan will see Ireland doing more than meeting the targets set down by the Eu-ropean Commission in the “Digital Plan for Europe”

Emphasising the importance of broadband for jobs, growth and sustainability as well as bridg-ing the digital divide, the Minister added: “High speed broadband will bring economic and social benefits across Ireland. This Plan lays the foundation for further momentum along our path to recovery. The resulting high speed broadband will be crucial for innovation, crucial for job crea-tion and crucial for the continued attraction of inward investment to Ireland. The emphasis on universal access will ensure balanced benefits, deliv-ering the connected society, at higher speeds, to all.”

After the politicians long and more than likely luxurious summer comes to a hault. Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has backed the HSE’S health’s pro-posals and guarantees further cuts would not affect the people’s needs. Groups representing the disabled and the elderly protested outside government buildings and have threatened to intensify their efforts to be heard by staying out over night. This surely does not bode well for the govern-ments first day back of the season with media and public eye scanning in on a building rift rising between the united government leaders. The Government plan on saving in around €75 million which they will take from a wide range of 800 allowances. Asked about the €130m cuts to the health sector, Mr Gilmore said it is always a challenge to make reductions and balance them with meeting the needs of people, but he said he had no doubt that is what Dr Reilly will do.

In response, Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelle-her said Mr Gilmore failed to address the concerns of patients and their families. He said: “The Tánaiste’s comments today will provide absolutely no comfort to the thousands of high-dependency patients who will have their home care supports cut as a result of this Government’s decisions.”

HSE regions have been asked to submit their cost-cutting plans by the end of the week. However, it is expected that this process may continue into next week. He said yesterday it was “regretta-ble” the HSE had announced cuts in services. “Every organisation, every department and every service has to ob-

viously work within budget,” he added. In the looming 2013 budget the government will attempt to raise €1.4 billion in revenue and cut €2.4 in spending, Health services will be set back by some €10 mil-lion. Protests are surely only going to inten-sify when you take into account the amount of vulnerable people relying on benefits.Asked about the €130m cuts to the health sec-tor, Mr Gilmore said it is always a challenge to make reductions and balance them with meeting the needs of people, but he said he had no doubt that is what Dr Reilly will do. This year, from 27th September to 14th No-vember, Dublin will be celebrating one of the most highly reputed theatre festivals in Europe. A festival which has “been on the world’s festival calendar since 1957!”, ac-cording to their website statement. The web-site also boasts how “in 2011, the Festival presented 553 performances in 25 venues and set Dublin city ablaze with the most in-vigorating exciting theatre in the world”. At the festival you can expect major in-ternational theatre of scale, with the hosting of pro-ductions by the world’s most highly regarded artists as well as premiered work from some of the stars

of Irish theatre. The widely renowned festival has previously exhibited shows by some of Ireland’s most loved and respected artists - including Sea-mus Heaney, Roddy Doyle, Brian Friel, Sebastian Barry, Enda Walsh and Tom Murphy. But this is not all. As said on their website “asides from hundreds of main-stage productions”, they will also be hold-ing “a multitude of special events” including “mas-ter classes from the world’s top practitioners, artist development programmes, film screenings, sympo-siums, schools workshops and panel discussions”.

The festival opens with a staged adaption of James Joyce’s “Dubliners” at the Gaiety Theatre on Sep-tember 27th.Willie White, the festivals new artistic director, told the Irish Times that it is “fitting to be launching this programme in Dublin’s iconic City Hall and to open the 2012 festival with a new ad-aptation of James Joyce’s Dubliners in the Gaiety Theatre”. He explained how “over the 18 days of the festival, we are inviting people living in, work-ing in or visiting Dublin to experience some of those stories, to take a look at familiar tales re-im-agined and to discover new ones yet to be heard”.For more information on events, dates and venues, please visit their website at dublintheatrefeestival.ie.

In a recent press release, Ford have claimed that their Focus model has been the best-selling car internationally for the first half of 2012. In this press release, available from their website, they also had the pleas-ure of announcing the landmark produc-tion of their 350 millionth vehicle of all time. In order to show exactly how colossal this fig-ure is John Fleming, Ford executive vice president of global manufacturing said “producing 350 million vehi-cles is equivalent to producing one vehicle every 10 sec-onds for our 109-year history. If placed end to end, the vehicles would stretch to the moon and back – twice,”. According to Bloomberg Business Week, Ford are also expecting to maintain the sales pace for its Focus compact car, which outsold the Toyota Co-rolla to be the world’s best-selling car in the first six months this year. The Toyota Corolla had enjoyed status as the bestselling car on earth in recent years. According to industry analysts IHS Automotive, in the first half of 2012, Ford sold 489,616 Focus mod-

els. This saw them overtake the 462,187 Corollas sold internationally by Toyota, which is now relegat-ed to the second most popular model on the planet.

In the Ford press release Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president for Global Market-ing, Sales and Service, attempted at explain-ing the reasons for the models recent success. “Embracing its performance, value, versa-tility and fuel economy, the Focus is attracting many new customers to the Ford brand for the very first time, particularly in Asia where we are growing every day”. “The Focus is a winner on so many levels be-cause it successfully provides customers with what they want most – a safe, smart, fuel-effi-cient, good-looking, fun-to-drive, affordable car.”

The latest results of the Irish Busi-ness Against Litter (IBAL) Anti Litter League show a marked improvement in the cleanliness of Tallaght which is now rated Clean to Europeans Norms.

According to the survey “Tallaght, previously ‘moderately littered’, im-proved to Clean to Europeans Norms. This is a great achievement for a large population area like Tallaght, which improved in 2011 from littered to mod-erately littered, and is now deemed Clean to European norms.” The survey states that “The local authority and the people of Tallaght should be proud”

There were no seriously littered sites in Tallaght and six of the ten sites sur-veyed were clear of littered and very well maintained. In fact the Tallaght Luas stop was “pristine and prob-

ably the best Luas stop in the country”.

The Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cathal King stated “I am de-lighted with the performance of Tallaght in the IBAL survey. This is evidence of the good work that has been put into maintaining a litter free area. I wish to congratulate the Council, the businesses and the people of Tallaght. This positive news reflects well on our County town. I urge everyone to keep up the good work and maintain this level of cleanliness”.

“The Council has reorganised the cleansing schedule for the County in the past months and the success of this ap-proach is reflected in positive results in the IBAL survey” said John Quinlivan, Director of Environmental Services. “The cleansing schedule is mapped and is now available to elected members. We will be making this available to the public before the end of the year”.

In a dramatic turn of events, Ry-anair boss Michael O’Leary has branded the passengers flying on his airline who forget to print out their boarding passes as ‘idiots’. The shocking rant from the chief executive of Europe’s biggest budget air-line came after a passenger had taken to Facebook to blast Ryanair for charging her €300 to print out boarding passes on a flight from Alicante to Bristol last month. Soon after the incident, the passen-ger in question, mother-of-two Suzy McLeod, created a Facebook page which was accompa-nied by the following abstract: “I had previ-ously checked in online but because I hadn’t printed out the boarding passes, Ryanair charged me €60 per person! Meaning I had to pay €300 for them to print out a piece of pa-per! Please ‘like’ if you think that’s unfair.” Over 500,000 members of the so-cial networking site clicked ‘like’ on the page, but it wasn’t long before O’Leary

chipped into the debate with his retort, saying: “Mother pays £200 for being an idiot and failing to comply with her agreement at the time of booking…. We think Mrs McLeod should pay 60 euros for being so stupid.”He continued on by saying: “She wasn’t able to print her boarding card because, as you know, there are no internet cafes in Alicante, no hotels where they could print them out for you, and you couldn’t get to a fax machine so some friend at home can print them and fax them to you.”

When quizzed on whether or not it was a common occurrence for pas-sengers to forget to print out their board-ing passes, he was equally as dismissive:“No, there are 0.02% of passengers who

are equally stupid… We say quite po-litely to those passengers, bu**er off.” Mrs. Mcleod has said that while she printed out boarding passes for herself, her two children and her parents on an outgoing flight from Bristol to Alacante, she was unable to print out the passes for the return flight due to the length of her stay. Ryanair has a policy of letting passengers print out their board-ing passes just 14 days in advance of depar-ture, Mrs. McLeod last had access to a printer the day before her 15 day stay in Alicante. It’s not the first time that Ryanair has come under fire for the poor treatment of its passengers, as it is frequently criticized for levying sizable fees for checking baggage into the hold of the plane, and being extreme-ly strict on the size and weight of check-on baggage. In addition to this, passengers are charged a €6 web-check in fee, and the air-line have also recently introduced an “EU261 Levy” which is related to paying compen-sation for flight delays and cancellations.

According to a new survey conduct-ed by ‘Flexibletrips’, which is part of Thomas Cook Ireland, holiday go-ers in Ireland this autumn have named America their top destination for short breaks in the coming months. New York came in as the number one destination for holiday goers, with San Francisco in second place, followed by Las Vegas in third. ‘Flex-ibletrips’ said that they were unsurprised by New York topping the poll due to its excellent retail rep-utation and unbeatable sight-seeing opportunities. Other notable cities which were pre-sent on the top 10 list included European cit-ies such as Paris at number eight, and Prague at number 9. Venice, Ibiza and Gran Canaria

also made appearances on the list at num-bers four, five and six respectively. Barcelona rounded off the list, coming in at number 10.

Commenting on the survey ‘Flexibletrips’ spokesperson John Grehan said: “Despite the distance involved, these cities are most peo-ple’s idea of a dream break. We Irish are clearly attached to our sun holidays in the European hotspots, but the US still holds special appeal, be it for the shopping in New York, the night-

life in Las Vegas or the style of San Franciso.”

In terms of Irish holiday destinations, a survey conducted by property website MyHome.ie in June of this year listed Galway as the favourite holiday spot for Irish holidaymakers. Kerry came in a close second, after having topped the list just 12 months ago. Other cities which proved popu-lar included Cork, Wexford, Donegal and Mayo. Dublin came in at a very modest sev-enth position, with just 3% of those surveyed suggesting that they would pick Dublin as a holiday destination. Cities such as Limerick, Cavan, Offaly and Monaghan proved unpopu-lar with holiday makers, with the numbers plan-ning trips to Northern Ireland also very low.

Study Shows Cannabis use affects IQ of Teenagers

Young people who regular consume cannabis are at risk of causing permanent dam-age to their intelligence, ac-cording to recent scientific study published in Proceed-ings of the National Academy of Sciences. It was shown that persistent and dependent use of the drug before the age of 18 was shown to be linked to lowered IQ in later years. The research, which spanned over the period of nearly four decades, showed an average IQ decline in regular cannabis us-ers of 8 points. The effects on the IQ shown to occur with cannabis use in this research are not “trivial”, says the Independent, in an article featuring an interview with Profes-sor Terrie Moffitt (one of the con-tributors to the cannabis study). She said “research has shown that IQ is a strong determinant of a person’s access to a college educa-tion, their performance on the job, their tendency to developed heat disease, and even early death”. As expected, the non-cannabis smoking test group aver-age IQ increased over the same time frame. However, the study found no evidence of similar problems af-

fecting people who only took up cannabis from adulthood onwards.

In reaction to the recent findings, Cannabis legalisation campaigner turned independent TD Luke “Ming” Flanagan told the Irish Sun that this study actually proved to be “another reason why [canna-bis] should be legalised”. He said “there’s a need for greater regula-tion and this would be easier to con-duct if we legalise cannabis. If you look at Amsterdam, for example, people under the age of 18 cannot buy it without presenting ID”. He added, in conclusion, that “the com-mon drug dealer isn’t going to ask for identification so that’s why we need to take the power from them”. Luke “Ming” Flanagan also revealed to The Irish Sun that he is “preparing to present a private members bill before the Dail next April, which makes the case that the Government could make annual savings of €480million by legalising cannabis — which could obviously be put to great use in other sectors.”

Fine Gael Senator for Dublin South East, Catherine Noone, has today called on Facebook to close down a Facebook page which posts the times and whereabouts of checkpoints across Dublin in order to help drivers avoid them.

Senator Noone said that the Facebook page, ‘Garda Checkpoints Dublin’ was both dangerous and irresponsible.

“The random nature of Garda check-points and speed cameras exist for a reason. That is to stop people speed-ing and drink driving and ultimate-ly to save lives. This approach has helped to reduce the numbers of peo-ple dying on Irish roads in the last fifteen years by more than halve.

“This page threatens to negate the impact of these important and effective road safety measures. Knowing and sharing the locations of checkpoints makes them far less effective. While it might seem like a harmless bit of fun, in reality it aides those who wish to engage in drink-driving or speeding, behaviour which puts them and other road users at risk.

“The fact that the page has received over 6,000 ‘likes’ in 24 hours is very discon-certing. This page has already posted the locations of 70 speed cameras and check-points. I have communicated with Face-book in a bid to get this page shut down.

“While the establishment of the Fa-cebook page doesn’t break the law, it certainly abuses the spirit of it and en-courages people to drive irresponsibly.

I would also urge responsible people to avoid the group and contact Facebook urging that the page be closed down.”

“Garda checkpoints exist in order to catch people who are speeding and drink driving and to deter other road users from engaging in this behaviour. There can be no doubt that this ap-proach has helped to drastically reduce the number of deaths on Irish roads.

“The number of road deaths fell to 212 in 2010, the lowest level on record. The target of achieving no more than 252 deaths per annum by the end of 2012 was achieved three years ahead of schedule. People who use this site are effective-ly trying to negate the impact of these hugely important road safety measures.

Noone calls on Facebook toclose Garda checkpoint page

The Government has announced that they will be reducing cuts to ser-vices for elderly and disabled peo-ple in the upcoming national budget. In a statement released by Minister for Health Dr James Reilly has said that he will need to look again at cuts which were suggested earlier in 2012, and ensure that those in need of special assistance are given proper support from the state. However, the minister was also quick to stress that savings need to be made on the €1.4 bil-lion disability budget, and cuts may need to be made in other areas in order to make up the difference. A group of disabled individuals had been protesting outside the Dáil over the course of several days during the months of Au-gust and September and have said that they will not back down unless cuts are reversed. The originally planned cuts which were initially announced by the HSE received a huge backlash, and appeared to create a rift within the current coalition between Fine Gael and Labour. Cuts which are still expected to be put in place include those on spending on home help services, as the Government looks to make saving of up to €130 million to make up the budget deficit.

In relation to the upcoming budget, Taoi-seach Enda Kenny admitted that the Government has some tough decisions to make: “The silly sea-son is now over and Government gets down to real work making the decisions in respect of sorting out our country’s public finances, making decisions that will make it more competitive for us to attract in-ward investment and the creation of jobs and mak-ing sure that services for those who need them…that we are in a position to deliver those,” he said.

In related news, up to 40 gluten-free products are expected to be made no longer avail-able either free or subsidised to patients suffering from Coeliac disease under HSE drugs schemes. The move is expected to save the Gov-ernment up to €3.6 million. However, the Coeliac Society of Ireland has reacted strongly against the proposed move, saying that it will make it much more difficult for those with coeliac disease to follow their recommended diet which could lead to potentially serious health side-affects.

Local Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Brian Hayes has today welcomed the confirmation he has received from South Dublin County Council that the TASC Pa-vilion on the Limekiln side of Tymon Park is to be built.

Minister Hayes stated, “TASC is made up of a number of clubs including Limekiln Rounders and Greenpark FC. For many years these clubs have been campaigning for the provision of a pa-vilion that would include changing facilities, showers, toilets, meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. In 2005 and 2006 TASC received a total of €700,000 in grant aid from the Department of Sports to develop such a facility but the legal requirements to obtain the grant were met with obstacles on every occasion.

Minister Hayes continued, “I met with members of TASC a number of weeks ago and learned first hand the obstacles they were faced with. Following lengthy discussions between my own Department, the Chief State Solicitor, Department of Sport and South Dublin County Coun-

cil I am delighted to say that these obstacles have now been overcome and a notice for tendering for the work will be published next week.”Minister Hayes further stated, “South Dublin County Coun-cil have confirmed to me that they expect the groundwork to begin later this year with a view of completing the project by January/ February next year. I find it extremely shocking that €700,000 sat idle since 2006 when the clubs involved in TASC could have had these facilities. This is a great day for the local areas of Greenhills, Limekiln, Walkinstown and Manor Estates.

Minister Hayes concluded, “I look forward to the opening of the new facility and Icongratulate all those involved who have fought for many years to establish it.”

15 year battle for Tymon Parkpavilion given the go ahead

The number of people signing onto the Live Reg-ister in Ireland has fallen by over 2,000 people in the last month, according to the latest reports. The official figures which emerged from the Central Sta-tistics Office (CSO) suggested that at the end of August, 434,400 people signed on to the live register. However the current unemploy-ment rate still stands at 14.7% which is unchanged from last month. Almost half of those who are on the register have been on it for more than a year. In 2012, the amount of long-term claimants who are male increased by 2.8%, or around 3,800 individuals, while the amount of long-term claimants who are female increased by 11.4%, or around 6,100 individuals. Over 19% of the register is made up of casual and part-time workers, which comes to just over 87,000 individuals. This is an increase from the same month in 2011, when 18.2% of those on the register were also working and claiming funds. Despite the stabilisation of these figures, experts have given little hope when it comes to the improvement of unemployment rates and say that minimal financial growth is expected in 2013. Public sec-

tor job cuts are expected to be high in the coming 12 months, and there has been no sign that there will be increased investment in the private sector either, which means the situation is likely to remain static.

The Irish Small & Medium Enterprise Association ISME has remarked that the live register figures remain poor and show little to no sign of improving. Chief executive for the association, Mark Fielding, has said that certain measures need to be taken if Ireland is to improve its labour market in the coming future: “Educational and training programmes, intern-ship schemes and other such initiatives have a limited capac-ity to get people back into the workforce. The best and most ef-ficient way to create and protect employment is to reduce state inflicted costs, which will generate confidence in business, in-crease consumer spending, which in turn will lead to job creation.”
