The BizBeat Team
Hello Masonites,
As always, we are excited
to bring to you another
edition of the monthly
Newsletter of the Full Time
MBA program, the one and
the only Biz-Beat!
February is one of those
months that flies by so
quickly. Maybe it is
because it has fewer days
than other months but it
feels like only yesterday
that we welcomed a new
Chinese year, opened and
shared Valentine gifts,
celebrated Black History
and watched the Super
Bowl.
We at the Bizbeat team
have loved every moment
of February but we are
more than ready for March
and Spring.
This edition features all the
things that have made our
smiles a little brighter and
our hearts a little warmer
this winter.
We hope you enjoy every
interview and article. There

BB: What is your area of
concentration and where did
you intern this summer?
CS: I took the Corporate
Finance and Entrepreneurship
CAMs and interned at
Gourmet Trading in L.A.
BB: Why did you decide to
come to Mason and has it
been everything you hoped?
CS: I wanted to come to
Mason for the small size,
academic tradition, and EP
program. Although I am far
from achieving my goals, my
experience has far exceeded
my initial expectations.
BB: What has been the best
part of your experience?
CS: Discovering my ideal
career for the next 20 years
and increasing my confidence
in my skills, knowledge, and
experiences. Also, it has
been awesome getting to
know my classmates and
them.
BB: How is the job search
going and what is your
ideal job?
CS: My job search came to
an end last summer after
meeting my future boss at a
bar in Venice Beach. My
ideal job is private equity in
Latin America but never
forgetting why the poverty
cycle and unnecessary
inequalities exist.
BB: I have heard you have
a passion for Latin/Central
America; can you tell us
more?
CS: Mujeres de pura
calidad! But Latin America is
an amazing combination of
my interests: polit ics,
economics, contemporary
history, Spanish, music,
outdoors, and spicy food. I
also love (almost envious)
the way Latin cultures value
family, trust, friendship, and
happiness.
BB: What is your favorite
thing to do when you are
not dealing with school
work?
CS: Learning about Latin
America—www.cepr.net. I
also like bro-ing out with
m y r o o m m a t e R o b
(occasionally Guyon joins),
grocery shopping and
cooking with my other
roommate Justin, and
sabotaging Asok.
BB: Well Valentine’s Day is
just around the corner;
what is the best gift
anyone has ever given
you on this day?
CS: When you are 5’2,
corky, and unsmooth you
have to give all the gifts on
Valentine’s Day. However,
on Valentine’s Day in the
4th grade I did get
dumped by my 6th grade
girlfriend. Even though I
wore Girbaud jeans, she
told me I was a loser.
Thank you Charlie and all the
very best in everything.

Based on the poll, we had
three top contenders for the
best AD and they are as
follows:
Audi
Dodge Ram (The
Farmer)
Jeep
And Dodge Ram came out
tops.
So we asked and you
answered.
This was my first Super Bowl
experience. Last year, I was
too bogged down with
figuring out bonds and
break evens.
This year’s event was worth
every minute. I even got to
watch a friend and Ravens
fan almost have a nervous
breakdown. Good times!
The rest of the world
however went with the tear
inducing Budweiser’s
Clydesdale.
The pictures of hardworking
men and women must have
resonated deeply with
dedicated business students
more than any other AD.
Congrats again Ravens!!!

With a population den-sity of 1.9 people per square mile, the num-ber of animals is actu-ally more than the num-ber of people inhabit-ing Mongolia.
The Mongolian stock exchange is the small-est in the world.
The traditional hospi-tality of nomadic tribes is overwhelming.
The vastness of the Go-bi desert, snow-peaked Bayan-Ölgi mountains, in addition to Mongoli-an grasslands, Tsensher hot springs, and lakes of Khövsgöl, offer am-ple opportunities to the eager tourist to enjoy
the outdoors.
Mongolia is very rich in natural resources and famous for cashmere.
The literacy rate in this country is over 80%.
Many dinosaur fossils still lie exposed in Mon-golia and the tourists pick them as souvenirs.
Phone vendors carry wireless phones and charge you 100 tugriks (the Mongolian curren-cy) per minute for mak-ing a call.
Women’s status is low and domestic violence is common.
Most people have cars, but they are mostly
second-hand and have been purchased from other countries.
Mongolians are in-trepid and upright, but get angry easily and are violent.
It’s one of the poorest countries in Asia with typical salaries remain-ing below $100 per month.
It’s a country of harsh extremes and therefore has a short travel sea-son.

Dragons, lions, pipa, qipao, silk fans, kung fu, karaoke.. What is all this you may ask? These were all part of Mason’s Chinese Lunar New Year Event. Traditionally the Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days.
The Mason community was fortunate enough to witness this fun-filled Chinese tradition on February 1st, 2013
Various performances by
the students delighted guests all night long. The acrobatic skills of the Lion Dance performers left the crowd asking for more. And of course, there was great food catered by Peter Changs’.
The Lunar New Year celebration encourages us to build strong relationships and welcome new spirits for wealth and good luck. I was very fortunate to be a
part of this event. It gave me an opportunity to know more about the Chinese culture, as well as to know my classmates better. They were all so patient and encouraging as I constantly butchered the dance moves.
I look forward to next year’s celebration! On behalf of everyone involved, we want to wish you all a Happy Year of the Snake!

Your thoughts so far and
message to your class-
mates.
It’s been a long and crazy
year that’s quickly winding
down. This is an amazing
program with wonderful
opportunities. Like all
things in life, you only get
out of it what you put into
it. I really encourage eve-
ryone to come out to all the
events coming up in the
next few weeks (YVR,
blood drive, golf tourna-
ments, mug nights, spring
formal, Mason Idol, Tribe
Fest) and socialize with
your classmates – especial-
ly people you still haven’t
gotten a chance to know.
What was coined as an
idea by Benjamin Franklin
in the year 1727, of a
small club dedicated to-
wards mutual improvement
on a common area of inter-
est, was taken to an all new
level by the current first
years of the MBA program
at Mason School of Busi-
ness. The global issues cov-
ered in the ‘Juntos’ discus-
sion groups this year com-
prised Corporate Responsi-
bility, Digital Marketing,
Data Analytics, Global Eco-
nomic systems, Food Crisis,
Fiscal Cliff, China,
Healthcare, North Korea,
and Transportation.
I chose to be a part of the
Data Analytics junto group
and I must say that it pro-
vided me with a platform
for looking at ‘big data’
from various angles I never
knew existed. We started
off by looking into the
world of social media, and
web analytics; and how it
has changed the way data
is generated, interpreted
and synthesized.
The group watched
‘Moneyball’ over the winter
-break and in the ensuing
discussion, simply marveled
at the way data analysis
has revolutionized the
sports industry, especially in
terms of player valuation.
Our junto experience was
concluded with a field trip
to meet the CFO of Bon
Secours Health System in
Richmond, Virginia, which
provided the group with a
real world example of da-
ta collection in a hospital
environment.
I still remember going
through the list of junto dis-
cussion groups and choosing
‘Data analytics’ as my only
area of interest. Little did I
know at that time that as I
would be sitting through the
concluding presentations of
my classmates at the end of
this nine-week period, I
would be sincerely admir-
ing the hard work that they
all have put in their individ-
ual groups. Each presenta-
tion topic seemed so inter-
esting that there was never
a dull moment, primarily
due to the diversity of the
cultural, professional, and
academic perspective of
our first year MBA class.
