D I S C O V E R G I L B E R TEEKING OUT ADVENTURE in and around metro Phoenix leads to so many wonderful places. Somewhat new to that list is Gilbert, a community with agricultural roots that show up
in the local food scene and in uniquely hand-crafted creations. Gilbert boasts a family-friendly vibe and an emerging nightlife, all of which has been created in alignment with the local love of great food, craft beer, Ari-zona wine, handmade goods, bike trails, open space, and our four-legged friends. How new is new? Well, Gilbert’s down-town, dubbed the Heritage District, has added 26 restaurants in the last five years! Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert grew up around the Arizona Eastern Railway and quickly became known as the “Hay Shipping Capital of the World.” More recently, Gilbert has received nods like “Phoenix’s Coolest Suburb” and a “top 5 foodie neighborhood in metro Phoenix,” known now for its peo-ple food more than its alfalfa. Gilbert is also
consistently recognized as one of the safest cities and best places to live in the US. Gilbert has become a livable city and a foodie hub with agriculture woven into its fabric, and this is never truer than with the Farm at Agritopia. Here, community farm-ing is combined with U-pick orchards, a farmers market, and produce that ends up on the menus of the restaurants within sight of where it was grown. Not to men-tion two Food Network-featured restau-rants, a craftsman marketplace, and a winery and brewery on-site. What else? Just an internationally known birding area in the Riparian Pre-serve, golf courses, entertainment venues, goat yoga, outstanding open-air shopping, and paths to connect it all. All this adds up to Gilbert being an ideal home base for Arizona explorations. With 22 national parks (including the Grand Canyon) and 35 state parks, Arizona has vast outdoor space and attractions to discover, many with-in an hour to a day-trip away from Gilbert.

Consistently named among the best—and
burgeoning—foodie towns in the country,
Gilbert knows a thing or two about pleasing even
the most discerning of palates. This fast-growing city retains its Main Street
charm while attracting culinary powerhouses to
open restaurants here. You want farm-to-table?
You’ve got it. You want family-friendly? It’s here.
Want to embark on a culinary journey into another culture? No
problem. Here, we break down Gilbert’s

CULINARY TRENDSETTERSWhen you think of restaurants that are pushing the boundaries of gastronomy, you might think of those in New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. You should add Gilbert to that list. In the Heritage District, James Beard Award-nominated chef Gio Osso shakes up the dining scene with Nico Heirloom Kitchen, where West Coast-inspired Italian fare gets a seasonal face-lift. One notable dish: the Food Network-featured lasagna al forno with cotto ham and béchamel. Then there’s Clever Koi with its Asian-inspired cuisine and creative cocktail pro-gram so impressive it caught the attention of The Wall Street Journal. Barrio Queen offers up a menu of more than 20 tacos, each packed with bold flavor combinations such as chorizo and fried eggs or grilled steak marinated with fresh oranges and garlic. Not Your Typical Deli breaks the rules in the best ways possible, primarily because it offers employment opportunities for those with developmental disabilities. In fact, nearly 50% of the employees are on
7DISCOVERGILBERT.COM
Start your day with belly-filling cfort food made with love.the autism spectrum. In addition to this good deed, the deli serves up good food, too. Sandwiches feature house-roasted meats, and the chocolate chip cookies—from the chef’s mom’s own recipe—have been recognized as the best in the state.
THE ORIGINALSFor every new hot spot popping up in Gil-bert’s imminently walkable Heritage Dis-trict, there’s a classic eatery that has stood the test of time with fan-favorite dishes and warm hospitality. The Farmhouse Restaurant is such a place. Its name is a nod to the restaurant’s original location in an actual farmhouse two miles south of its current location. Go for breakfast to start your day with belly-filling comfort food made with love.

World’s Best CoffeeOK, we have no proof of it being the world’s best, but Bergies has been honored with numerous local “best of” accolades. And for good reason—the shop specializes in custom roasting and blending of premium coffee beans from Central America, South America, Africa, and Indonesia. With a prime location in the heart of the Heritage District, Bergies brings an international fl air and fl avor—literally—to Gilbert’s dining scene.
Joe’s Real BBQ is housed in a 1929 building, but the restaurant itself is more modern; it opened in 1998. Pecan-smoked meats, homemade sauces, and platters of tender ribs, plus a kid-friendly atmosphere all mean that you should arrive hungry and bring the whole family. Joe Johnston, of Joe’s Real BBQ, also has a hand in the ever-popular Liberty Market, a restaurant launched in the early days of the Heritage District’s revitalization. Its laid-back feel belies its serious food game—if you’re there for breakfast, order the griddled bread pudding and a café cubano (Cuban espresso). Even though its new iteration in Gilbert only recently opened, Nicantoni’s Pizza has been around Greater Phoenix for years. From Italian-pizzeria classics like calamari and ricotta meatballs to calzones and Sicilian-style pizza, the offerings speak to Old World cuisine in a New World setting.
HIPSTER VIBESAs a descriptive term, “hipster” gets a bad rap. But all it means is that a place knows how to set the scene with style. And when it comes to a great restaurant, some-times it’s all about the ambiance. Local restaurant group Upward Projects chose Gilbert as a landing pad for not one, but two of their concepts: Postino East and Joyride Taco House. Per-fect for sharing a nosh board and a bottle of wine, Postino welcomes all to its open-air space. Let it be known: This is where hip families come to eat and play. Similarly decked out with cool décor and an alfresco spirit, Joyride offers up shareable Mexican dishes and a margarita menu that’s to die for. For a contemporary take on the classic burger-and-fries meal, head to Zinburger. Under the lofty ceiling of the modern, barnlike dining room, sink your teeth into

the namesake burger, topped with Manchego cheese and Zinfandel-braised onions. On the side? How about Parmesan-sprinkled zucchini fries with ranch for dipping?
FUN FOR ALLAs a destination, Gilbert—and especially the Heritage District—has a lot to brag about. It’s walkable, accessible, family-friendly, foodie friendly, and exudes warmth, charm, and char-acter. So it’s not a surprise that a lot of eateries wholeheartedly embrace the something-for-everyone approach. Breakfast joint Snooze encourages cus-tomization of its menu, which is packed with everything from classic egg dishes to a quinoa breakfast bowl with baby kale and crispy pro-sciutto. They even serve cocktails, including one drink with bacon-infused bourbon. Another “you-do-you”-style restaurant, Grubstak lets you build your own entrée, ingredient by ingredient, with their expert guidance, of course. At Everybody Loves Fondue, choices are simple and delicious: pick a sauce (cheese, car-amel, chocolate) and then select foods to dip into said sauce (ham, chicken, veggies, sweets, even corn dogs and pretzel bites). Who doesn’t love that?
9DISCOVERGILBERT.COM
Its laid-back feel belies its serious food game.
Even if you’re not a seafood fan, don’t miss High Tide Seafood Bar & Grill. Why? It’s a chance to watch a unique culinary method in action: steam kettle cooking. Using high-pressure steam, which applies indirect heat and allows for maximum flavor to remain intact, chefs prepare sea-food right before your very eyes. Or, order a landlubber item from the menu and enjoy a local taste—High Tide sources meat, produce, and baked goods from nearby purveyors.
AGRITOPIANationally known for being one of the first agrihoods in the country, Agri-topia is a live-eat-play destination in Gilbert centered around an 11-acre urban farm. Where others claim to be farm-to-table, the restaurants at Agritopia live and breathe it. Food is sourced directly from the bounty grown on-site, including from a citrus grove, date and olive trees, and fields of greens and veggies. You haven’t tasted fresh food until you’ve eaten at one of the restaurants at Agritopia. A few to try: Joe’s Farm Grill, featured on the Food Network, brings people from all over the metro area to savor burgers, sandwiches, and salads under the shade of giant trees; The Coffee Shop, whose freshly roasted java is rivaled only by their delicious cupcakes, also showcased on the Food Network; The Uprooted Kitchen, which features salads with plucked-from-the-ground produce; and Fire & Brimstone, utilizing an impressive wood-fired oven to bake crispy and gooey artisanal pizzas.

BOTTLES & BREWSGilbert’s craft beer & wine embody the diverse flavors of the state
ldly Popular Don’t miss Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. (Instagram @azwilderness), Gilbert’s fi rst craft brewery and widely considered one of the best breweries in the world. Seriously. With glowing ink from everyone from Esquire to the Phoenix New Times, this brew shop is a must for beer lovers. Start with a fl ight of fi ve three-ounce pours. Following a conventional wisdom that says you should sample from light to dark, begin with the popular Kachina Kolsch (made with White Sonora Wheat from local Hayden Flour Mills) and work your way up to the Superstition Coffee Stout (brewed with coffee from local purveyor Superstition Coffee). You’ll soon start to notice a theme: Local. And it’s one you’ll encounter again and again—an emphasis on high-quality Ari-zona agricultural products that support the brewers’ “local fi rst” ethos. Harvesting many of their own ingre-dients, owners Jonathan Buford and Pat-rick Ware also incorporate as many other Arizona ingredients as they can get their

collective hands on: grains, nuts, fruits, honey, and more. With such a diverse list to choose from, you can bet these guys aren’t resting on their laurels. They’re known for their creativity and fearlessness, experi-menting with fl avors and techniques you won’t fi nd elsewhere. But never fear: For the less adventurous, there’s plenty of that modern-day staple—the IPA. And if the suds get your taste buds going, choose from a pub-focused menu that includes jalapeño meatloaf sliders, addictive artichoke dip, or perhaps a barbecue-chicken quesadilla.

from other Arizona wineries. Can’t decide between white, red, or rosé? Petite three-ounce pours are the perfect size for those who’d like to sample a variety. Come in early to try the Breakfast Wine, blending white wine and seasonal local fruits with forced carbonation for a fresh take on the mimosa, or enjoy a refreshing Northern Italian-style spritz, with fresh herbs and fruit. Patrons can nosh on a local meat-and-cheese board or can order food from neighboring restaurants. Garage-East embodies a European vil-lage winery spirit, where wine is the accent to good conversation and companionship in a casual atmosphere.
A Toast to Old Friends Next, head down the road to Barnone at Agritopia, where a dozen local artisans make and sell their crafts in an expansive 60-year-old converted machinery barn. Here, you can sample Arizona wine at Garage-East or imbibe great craft beer at 12 West Brewing.
Garage-East (@garage.east) owners Brian and Megan Ruffentine and Todd and Kelly Bostock (who also own Southern Arizona’s Dos Cabezas WineWorks) recon-nected years after high school and decided to funnel their mutual love of Arizona wine into the creation of Garage-East—from the French word garagiste, a nod to renegade small-batch winemakers in France. Think Copper State wine can’t compete with California? A visit to Garage-East might just change your mind. Most of the drink menu highlights Garage-East’s own wines, but they also feature guest wines

A Brewer’s Dozen Sharing a patio with Garage-East is 12 West Brewing Co. (@12westbrewing).Launched in 2016 by majority owners Bryan McCormick and Noel Garcia, the operation has quickly grown from one-barrel brewing (still used for creating sour beers) to a 10-barrel off-site system to meet popular demand. As the name implies, a dozen beers at a time grace the changing chalkboard menu. Their specialty? “Good beer,” according to general manager and co-owner Jayelynn Willman. As with Arizona Wilderness, 12 West strives to incorporate local ingredients like the Agritopia-grown blood oranges that fl a-vor their popular Blap Blap, a classic Belgian wheat beer. IPA fans can choose between the West-coast style Frontside IPA or the New

England-style K-Lax. Order a fl ight to sam-ple the variety—from IPA to saison to stout. The atmosphere? Welcoming, with long pine tables that encourage conversation with your neighbors. The crowd? Refresh-ingly multi-generational. Hungry? Order excellent food from Fire & Brimstone, also in Barnone, where you can enjoy everything from antipasto to pizza to salads. The two businesses often work together on inventive food and beer pairings.

If you like live music, dance, or theater, Gilbert gives you cause for applause. The town has performance venues large and small that cater to a variety of tastes. Here are just a few. The 35,000-square-foot Higley Cen-ter for the Performing Arts (Instagram @higleycenter) is one of the area’s largest venues, with a concert hall that seats 1,235. Opened in 2006, it has showcased the aforementioned McGuinn and Garfunkel, and offers about a dozen touring shows during each fall to spring season, includ-ing the annual Nutcracker ballet as per-formed by the Southwest Youth Ballet and
a live orchestra. This year, look for performances by shadow dance troupe Catapult, plus a one-man play about Charles Lindbergh.
The Hale Centre Theatre (@haletheatreaz),located right in the middle of Gilbert’s downtown Heritage District, opened its 11,000-square-foot venue in 2003. The 365-seat theater, with plush seat-ing in the round and a lobby concession stand, is one of fi ve theaters in the West founded in 1947 by aspir-ing actors Ruth and Nathan Hale. Still family-run and drawing actors from the community, the Gilbert
location features a year-round season of family-friendly entertainment like the recently presented Meet Me in St. Louis.
This year, look for upbeat shows that include No, No, Nanette and Sister Act. Want a few adult beverages with your music? Locally owned Cuisine & Wine Bistro (@cuisineandwinebistro) pairs live performances with a French-inspired seasonal menu and an impres-sive selection of boutique wines and craft beer. Enjoy the grooves—ranging from pop to jazz and beyond—every Friday and Saturday night. JC’s Steakhouse (@jcssteakhouse) turns it up a notch with live classic rock and a little country on Friday

and Saturday nights. The tunes perfectly com-plement the American menu featuring such beef cuts as porterhouse and rib eye, as well as Alas-kan king crab and lobster tail. For something a bit more rowdy, Dierks Bent-ley’s Whiskey Row (@whiskeyrowgilbert) is one of the newer additions to the Heritage District. The rambling indoor/outdoor restaurant with a vast central bar has plenty of elbow room so you can grab a burger, have a craft beer, and rock out–even dance–to jammin’ country music. DJs spin tunes nightly, and a live band takes the stage every Saturday. Settle in for the show on comfy orange sofas or enjoy a drink over yard games such as cornhole or ping pong. Don’t forget to wear your cowboy boots. Fun for all ages, Gilbert’s Downtown Concert Series—held March through May and again in October and November—brings live music per-formances to the outdoor Water Tower Plaza in the heart of the Heritage District. Pack a picnic or dine at one of the many nearby restaurants, then spread out a blanket and enjoy local bands
that perform in a variety of musical genres. During fall’s Gilbert Off The Street Art and Music Festival in the Heritage District, live bands entertain on two stages during a weekend also fi lled with craft vendors, food trucks, street performers, and demonstrations by chalk artists.

ART & HERITAGE IN THE HEART OF TOWNArt Intersection (Instagram @artintersection),housed in the heart of the Gilbert Heritage Dis-trict, features three galleries with local photog-raphy, paintings, and pottery, all designed to give beginning, emerging, and established art-ists working space and airy galleries to showcase their work through juried exhibitions. “Our motto is ‘learn, create, and exhibit,’” says founder Alan Fitzgerald. “Over our seven years of operation, we’ve shown the work of 2,000 artists.” Fitzgerald repurposed a former dance academy into the galleries and working studios that now feature the exhibits as well as fi ne-art classes. If you’re looking for an art-themed souvenir, be sure to explore the on-site gift shop, which fea-tures works from current exhibitions for sale. An array of items line the shelves, including art pho-tography books by renowned photographers such as Wynn Bullock, who the gallery represents, and other well-known artists like Scott Baxter, who produced the famed 100 Years 100 Ranchers pho-tography book for the Arizona Centennial. The organization also holds exhibitions designed to spark social and environmental con-versations at Gallery 4 in HD South, Gilbert’s nearby arts and culture center. The just-renamed facility, which incorporates the Gilbert Histori-cal Museum, features interactive exhibits, a win-dow into the history of the once-tiny farm town that has grown into a vibrant family-friendly community, and a variety of classes and semi-nars for emerging and avid artists. HD South also hosts events as varied as a quilting show and the Gilbert Visual Arts League’s annual juried show.

FRESH-PICKED & FUNIt’s easy to fi nd the Gilbert Farmers Market (@gilbertmarket)—just look for the famous water tower. The market, held on Saturdays, is “the place to go for foodies,” says Jessa Kop-penhofer, the market’s manager. “We require that our vendors personally grow, raise, pro-duce, or create their product.” Offering everything from farm-fresh chem-ical-free produce, to honey, grass-fed beef, skin care products, and candles, the market typically has around 70 vendors. The market also welcomes a hand-picked selection of food trucks and pop-up eateries. Check out Ripe Ice Pops’ adorable 1964 Chevrolet panel truck, from which owner Blake Bigelow serves up delicious frozen treats handmade from fresh ingredients. Or, satisfy that sweet tooth with locally produced honey from Sun Valley Bees—take your pick from mesquite, wildfl ower, orange blossom, and even cat’s claw vine varieties. Seasonal face painting and balloon twisting—or water play in the nearby splash pad—ensure the kids enjoy the festivities, too. Each fi rst and third Saturday, October through March, expand your explorations a few steps beyond the market to stroll through an array of handcrafted, juried art at the neighboring outdoor Gilbert Art Walk (@thegilbertartwalk). The event features a variety of artists and art forms as well as live music. Recycling is a hallmark of the artists repre-sented here, including wine- and beer-bottle art, vintage postcards recreated as desert-themed artwork, and old violins and costume jewelry repurposed into beautiful home decor.

Yes, it’s an actual repurposed 1950s-era Quonset hut barn, housing a variety of top hand-crafters, including LetterCraft (@lettercraft). LetterCraft owners Brandon and Katie Young, former teachers, turned their passion for handcrafted, recycled wood products into a thriving business. The fi rm’s bread-and-butter business con-sists of custom corporate gifts laser cut with precision equipment. “But we cre-ate products for all sorts of events,” says Brandon. “We make their visions come to life.” In addition to special orders, visi-tors can also purchase ready-made pieces such as celebrity face key chains, pins, and magnets. “We create items at a price that teachers can afford,” says Brandon. Barnone also features a custom machine shop, paper-craft shop, fl ower designer, beauty salon, and some great culinary experiences. It’s an all-in-one stop to enjoy some of the Phoenix area’s best handcrafted items—and visit with the talented, passionate people who cre-ate them.

ENTERTAINMENT & OUTDOORSIndoors or out, Gilbert is a great place to play. From bowling to golf, swimming to swing sets, there are plenty of options for all ages.
Gilbert, named a Bicycle Friendly Community, is well-known for its Central Trail System that offers approximately 135 miles of enjoy-ment for outdoor enthusiasts. Along with equestrian tracks are more than 54 miles of marked bike trails where you can pedal safely and leisurely. The trails parallel the city’s canal system and serve as a scenic artery between many of the city’s pub-lic parks, including the celebrated Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch. As one of the largest and most popular wildlife preserves in Gilbert, the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch(pictured above) features cycling, equestrian, and hiking trails open to the community. The property’s eight ponds attract a variety of wild-life, and it is considered the premier birdwatching facility in the Phoenix metro region. Nearly 300 species of birds have been sighted, and many people come from different states and countries to see the beautiful and sometimes rare species. The park boasts covered picnic areas, a dinosaur dig site for kids, petroglyphs, a small botanical gar-den, an urban fi shing lake, and campsites that can be reserved to extend your outing. The preserve also has the only Phoenix-area astronomy observatory, which is open to the public every Friday and Saturday from dusk until 9:30 p.m., subject to weather conditions.

Spring Training, typically held from mid-February through the month of March, marks the unoffi cial start of the baseball season. It is a time for revelry in the warm spring sun throughout the Greater Phoe-nix area. Arizona’s Cactus League, com-prised of 15 Major League Base-ball teams, participates in Spring Training games at each of 10 local stadiums. Gilbert’s convenient loca-tion gives visitors easy access to three parks: Mesa’s Sloan Park and HoHoKam Stadium, homes of the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics, respectively, and Tempe Diablo Sta-dium, where the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim warm up for the season.
Enhance your Spring Training expe-rience with a stay in Gilbert. Here you can enjoy plenty of baseball action combined with the city’s top-notch dining and entertainment, scenic golf courses, inviting hiking and biking trails, awe-inspiring art and culture venues, one-of-a-kind shopping, and so much more. It’s a grand slam.

Gilbert boasts a variety of arts and culture sites and activities. History buffs, artists, thespians, and families will all find something to enjoy here.
Immerse yourself in arts and cul-ture with a visit to Gilbert’s creative public spaces. The IN FLUX (Instagram @infl uxaz) art program—currently operated throughout Gilbert and its neigh-boring cities of Chandler, Tempe, and Scottsdale—was launched by Scottsdale Public Art in 2010 as an initiative for temporary installations in vacant storefronts. Since then it has expanded to include other open public spaces. The program provides opportunities for Arizona artists to create site-specifi c, temporary public art installations in a variety of loca-tions. A win-win, the initiative allows local artists to wield their artistic know-how and gain public recogni-tion while the viewing public is treated to creative displays in unexpected locales. Check discovergilbert.com for locations of current installations. To satisfy your own desire to cre-ate, pay a visit to one of these Gilbert DIY art studios. At The Art House, instructors help you swish and swipe your way to a beautifully painted canvas. Focus on wood-sign artwork at Board & Brush Creative Studio (@boardandbrushaz). Or take a class at Studio 223 (@madeby2sisters) for wood signs, you-build-it workshops, fl ower arrangement, and more.

From The New York Times to NBC News, press coverage of Agrito-pia’s unique existence spans far and wide. So, what exactly is Agritopia (Instagram @agritopia), anyway? In the simplest terms, it’s a 160-acre lifestyle village in Gilbert centered around an 11-acre organic urban farm. The Johnston family bought the land in 1960 and lived, worked, and raised their children on the farm. In the 1990s, when subur-ban encroachment threatened their bucolic existence, the Johnston sons collaborated with the Town of Gilbert and community developers to turn the land into a thriving modern-day village built on farming traditions. In addition to the farm, Agritopia has 450 residential lots; an always-stocked farm stand that operates on the honor system; a school; a winery featuring grapes grown in Southern Arizona; a craft brewery; a coffee shop; and a market where artisans work and sell their wares. All of Agritopia’s businesses are open to the public, welcoming visi-tors to stroll the grounds, buy pro-duce, mingle with the locals, and shop the artisanal goods. And to eat! All of Agritopia’s res-taurants feature fresh produce from the farm. Showcased on the Food Network, Joe’s Farm Grill is a family-friendly eatery offering up good-for-you burgers and salads; you can get crispy wood-fi red pizza at Fire & Brim-stone; and plant-based The Uprooted Kitchen feeds hungry veggie-lovers.
