    PREFACE

The MBA course of studies is well for businessmanagement. The practical training at MBA level is to develop

skill and knowledge. Practical training helps to gain real lifeknowledge about the business.

Theoretical knowledge is not enough for the practical life. Inevery professional course, training is an important factor. Faculty

gives us theoretical knowledge of various subjects in the college

but we are practically exposed of such subjects when we get thetraining in the organization. It is only the training through which Icome to know that what a business is and how it works. I can learnabout various operations being performed in the training, whichwould, in return, help me in the future when I will enter the

    practical field.

During this whole project of this I got a lots of experience

and came to know about the management practices in real thathow it differs from those of theoretical knowledge and the practically in the real life. In todays world, where lots ofcompetition is prevailing in the market, theoretical knowledge isnot sufficient. Beside this one need to have practical knowledge, which would help an individual in his/her carrier activities.

    INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT ENTITLE

    Internet caf

An Internet cafor cybercaf is a place which providesinternet access to the public, usually for a fee. These businessesusually provide snacks and drinks, hence the caf in the name. The

fee for using a computer is usually charged as a time-based rate.

Cyberia: one of the world's first Internet cafs, London, 1994

The online caf phenomenon was started in July 1991 by WayneGregori in San Francisco when he began SFnet Coffeehouse

Network. Gregori designed, built and installed 25 coin operatedcomputer terminals in coffeehouses throughout the San Francisco

Bay Area. The caf terminals dialed into a 32 line Bulletin BoardSystem that offered an array of electronic services including

    FIDOnetmail and, in 1992,Internet mail.

The concept of a caf with full Internet access (and the nameCybercaf) was invented in early 1994 by Ivan Pope.Commissioned to develop an Internet event for an arts weekend attheInstitute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, and inspiredby the SFnet terminal based cafes, Pope wrote a proposaloutlining the concept of a caf with Internet access from the tables. The event was run over the weekend of 1213 March 1994 during

the 'Towards the Aesthetics of the Future' event. In June 1994, The Binary Cafe, Canada's first Internet caf, opened in Toronto, Ontario.

After an initial appearance at the conference site of the 5thInternational Symposium on Electronic Art,ISEA, in August 1994,

an establishment called CompuCafe was established in Helsinki,Finland, featuring both Internet access and a robotic beer seller.

Inspired partly by the ICA event, a commercial establishment of

this type, calledCyberia, opened on September 1, 1994 inLondon,England.[2]

The first public, commercialAmerican Internet caf was conceivedand opened by Jeff Anderson in August 1994, at Infomart in

Dallas, Texas and was called The High Tech Cafe.

Next, in the USA, three Internet cafs opened in theEast Villageneighborhood ofNew York City: Internet Cafetm, opened by Arthur

Perley, the @ Cafe, and the Heroic Sandwich.

A variation of Internet caf called PC bang (similar to LANgaming center) became extremely popular in South Korea whenStarCraft was released in 1997. Although computer andbroadband penetration per capita were very high, young peoplewent to PC bangs to play multiplayer games.

affordable than personal ownership of equipment and/or software.A variation on the Internet caf business modelis theLAN gamingcenter , used for multiplayer gaming. These cafs have severalcomputer stations connected to a LAN. The connected computers

are custom-assembled for gameplay, supporting popularmultiplayergames. This is reducing the need for video arcadesand arcade games , many of which are being closed down ormerged into Internet cafs. The use of Internet cafs formultiplayergaming is particularly popular in certain areas of Asialike China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and ThePhilippines.

In some countries, since practically all LAN gaming centers alsooffer Internet access, the terms net cafe and LAN gaming center

have become interchangeable. Again, this shared-access model ismore affordable than personal ownership of equipment and/or software, specially since games often require high end andexpensive PCs.

There are also Internet kiosks , Internet access points in publicplaces likepublic libraries, airporthalls, sometimes just for briefuse while standing. Many hotels, resorts, and cruise ships offer

Internet access for the convenience of their guests; this can takevarious forms, such as in-room wireless access, or a web browserthat uses the in-room television set for its display (usually in thiscase the hotel provides a wireless keyboard on the assumption thatthe guest will use it from the bed), or computer(s) that guests canuse, either in the lobby or in a business center. As with telephone

service, in the US most mid-price hotels offer Internet access froma computer in the lobby to registered guests without charging anadditional fee, while fancier hotels are more likely to charge for

the use of a computer in their "business center."

For those traveling by road in North America, many truck stopshave Internet kiosks, for which a typical charge is around 20 cents

    per minute.[5]

Internet cafs come in a wide range of styles, reflecting theirlocation, main clientele, and sometimes, the social agenda of the

proprietors. In the early days they were important in projectingthe image of the Internet as a 'cool' phenomena.

    Evolution

Internet cafs are a natural evolution of the traditionalcaf. Cafsstarted as places for information exchange, and have always beenused as places to read the paper, send postcards home, playtraditional or electronic games, chat to friends, find out localinformation. Cafs have also been in the forefront of promotingnew technologies, for example, the car in 1950s California.

As Internet access is in increasing demand, many pubs, bars andcafes have terminals, so the distinction between the Internet cafeand normal caf is eroded. In some, particularly Europeancountries, the number of pure Internet cafs is decreasing sincemore and more normal cafs offer the same services. However, there are European countries where the total number of publiclyaccessible terminals is also decreasing. An example of such a

country is Germany. The cause of this development is acombination of complicated regulation, relatively high Internetpenetration rates, the widespread use of notebooks and PDAs andthe relatively high number of WLAN hotspots. Many pubs, barsand cafs in Germany offer WLAN, but no terminals since the

Internet caf regulations do not apply if no terminal is offered.Additionally, the use of Internet cafs for multiplayer gaming isvery difficult in Germany since the Internet cafe regulations and a

second type of regulations which was originally established forvideo arcade centers applies to this kind of Internet cafes. It is, forexample, forbidden for people under the age of 18 to enter such an

Internet caf, although particularly people under 18 are animportant group of customers for this type of Internet caf.

While most Internet cafs are private businesses many have been set up to help bridge the 'digital divide', providing computeraccess and training to those without home access. For example, the UK government has supported the setting up of 6000

    telecentres.

In Asia, gaming is very popular at the Internet Cafes. Thispopularity has helped create a strong demand and a sustainablerevenue model for most Internet cafes. With growing popularity, there also comes with this a responsibility as well. In fighting forcompetitive market share, the Internet cafes have started chargingless and hence are adopting alternate means to maximize revenue.

This includes selling food, beverages, game and telephone cards toits patrons.

In July 2008 the worlds first Internet Cafe on the Internet wasreleased in Karlskoga, Sweden. Virtual Internet Cafe [1] use the

same principles as a regular Internet Cafe, but is completelybased on the Internet. Users of Virtual Internet Cafe remotecontrol designated Cafe computers instead of using their owncomputers on the Internet. This gives the users the option to be

completely anonymous on the Internet while protecting their owncomputers from malicious software and spywares.

To combat terrorism, Italian government requires positiveidentification from all users of Internet cafes. (Florence, May2006)

In places with censoring regimes such as Singapore, Internet cafs

are closely controlled. In some places computers are in booths toallow private access to pornography. In some areas ofLosAngeles they are controlled because they attract street gangs.

Copyright violations by clients are cause for concern by InternetCafe Operators. For example, the EasyInternetcafe chain

discontinued its CD burning services because it was heldresponsible for copyright violations by clients.

According to the "Survey of China Internet Caf Industry" by thePeople's Republic of China Ministry of Culture in 2005, MainlandChina has 110,000 Internet cafs, with more than 1,000,000employees contributing 18,500,000,000yuan to P.R. China's GDP.More than 70% of Internet caf visitors are from 18 to 30 yearsold. 90% are male, 65% are unmarried, and 54% hold a universitydegree. More than 70% of visitors play computer games. 20% ofChina's Internet users go to Internet cafes.

In Brazil, the initial concept brought by Monkey Paulista wasbased on the business model used by Internet cafes in South

Korea, since this was the first house LAN to exist in Brazil, inaugurated in So Paulo, starting its activities in 1998. Thecompany closed in 2010. [2] However, just a week later forreasons of bureaucracy, the company Lan Game @ The House

was opened and today is the 1st lan house of Brazil in activity.Today it is seen as the country as a way to test new technologiesand demonstration of games and products.

    Milestones:

Before 1995 - An Internet Caf called 3C+T appeared inShanghai, probably the first in China. The price was 20 Yuan

    per hour($2.50 per hour)

1995~1998 - China's Internet Cafs proliferate. Playingunconnected games is the main purpose of caf users. Theaverage price was 15~20 Yuan per hour.

1998~2000 - A period of great expansion for Internet cafeswith more competition.

2000~2002 - Increasing popularity in Internet games. The

first Internet chain caf opened in 2001. Because nine peoplewere killed in an Internet caf fire in Beijing in June, 2002, anew regulation was passed giving the Ministry of Culture fullresponsibility for licensing Internet cafs.

After 2002 - Heavy censorships were imposed, includingreal-name registration. At the end of 2004, more than 70,000

Internet cafs were closed in a nationwide campaign.

2008 - Microsoft attempts to make Internet Cafes profitablein Asia and other emerging markets. After discussions withthe governments of these countries, it helps to establish safe

    Internet cafes.

2009: Over 6,000 Internet cafes in countries like Thailand andIndonesia have voluntarily signed up to provide a safe softwareexperience for its patrons. With over 100,000 computers involved

in this program, it is the largest mass improvement of Internetcafes in the world.

    Internet caf

According to APWKomitel (Association of Community InternetCenter) there are 5,000 Internet Cafes in urban Indonesian cities

in 2006 providing computer/printer/scanner rental, training, PCgaming and Internet Access/Rental to the people who do not have PC or Internet access at home. The website also contains adirectory listing some of these warnet/telecenter/gamecenter in

Indonesia. In urban areas, the generic name is Warnet(or Warung Internet) and in rural areas the generic name is Telecenter.Warnets/ Netcafes (i.e.: Java NetCafe established in 1998) areusually owned by private SME as bottom-up initiatives, while

Telecenters in rural villages are usually initiated by Governmentand Donors as top-down financing. Information onNetcafe/Warnet in Indonesia can also be found in a book titled:Connected for Development:Indonesian Case study. Currently, no

special license is required to operate an Internet Cafe or Warnetin Indonesia, except for the ordinary business license also appliedto cafe or small shop. Because of hype and many Internet cafe

starting their business without proper planning, some of themclosed down for lack of a business plan. Although the number is

still growing, associations such asAPWKomitelurge new Internetcafe owners to do a feasibility study before planning to open an

Internet cafe, and provide a business model calledMultipurposeCommunity Internet Center or "MCI Center"to make the businessmore sustainable

Brief History about Cyber Cafe:Our History

CYBERCAFE was founded in April 1995 by threeyoung entrepreneurs. The idea originated in London,England when one of the partners noticed a new typeof caf, cleverly called CYBERIA. This novelty providedthe general public Internet access in a quality cafsetting. At that time, nothing similar existed in NewYork and in light of the emerging Internet boom theopportunity to open a specialty caf with computers seeirresistible.

The partners found the perfect spot for theirnew store at 273 Lafayette Street on the cornerof Prince Street, in SoHo's new Silicon Alley. The 20 fttin ceilings and enormous windows reflected everythingthe Internet symbolized: openness and greaterfreedom of speech. Right from the beginning,

In 1996, CYBERCAFE licensed its concept to ahuge arcade center in the middle of Times

Square. 50 computers were installed and millionsof people from all over the world came to visit. Inaddition, a hotel serving the US Army & Marinesin Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. also bought a license andCYBERCAFE became the first Internet caf in theMiddle East. By 1999, enough funds had beensaved up to open a second store in Manhattanat 250 West 49th Street between Broadway and

8th Avenue. It was becoming clear that the mainfocus of the business would no longer be localswithout computers, but New York's 37 milliontourists, all of whom would eventually have email accounAll was well until the tragedy of September 11th 2001.New York's tourist trade slowed considerably, especially downtown below 14th Street,

where CYBERCAFE's first store was located.Sadly after nine months, the store at 273 LafayetteStreet was finally closed down. The loss was great, but it's other store on 49th Street still remained profitab

    RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The advanced learners dictionary current English lays downthe meaning of research as a careful investigation or inquiry

specially through search for new facts in any branch of

knowledge. Readman and Mory defines as A systematized effortto gain new knowledge.

The project was to involved a detail study of the marketbased on the customer. The markets available for the study wherethe cyber cafe, computers shop and distributors. For estimatingthe market potential different methods of primary data collectionwhere owner in the from of questionnaire, structured and

unstructured interviews and methods for establishing facts aboutbuilding business management insights for customer requirement, services etc.

    RESEARCH APPROACH :

There are different research approaches and the researchinstruments that where employed during the research work. Thecommon research approach for collecting the primary data areobservations, focus group, surveys and experiments. In this case ,a general survey to gain knowledge about the market, commonly

known as the pilot survey was and undertaken where particularlyinformation was gathered with respect to the brands, peoples /customers perception so that it serves as a foundation to preparethe questionnaire for collecting primary data and that it helps indeciding other methods to be adopted which may be useful in

    gathering the necessary information.

  • 8/7/2019 Biswajit project

    24/51

    RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS :

Marketing researchers have a choice of two main researchinstruments in collecting primary dataquestionnaire. Aquestionnaire consists of a set questions presented to respondent

for their answers. Because of its flexibility, the questionnaire by

far the most common instrument used to collect the primary data.Questionnaire had to be carefully developed, tasted and debuggedbefore they are administered on large scale. In preparing aquestionnaire, the professional marketing researcher carefullychooses the question and their form, wording and sequence. Inaddition, the form of the question asked can influence theresponse. Marketing researchers distinguish between openendand closed end questions. Closed end questions prespecify all

the possible answers, and respondents makes a choice amongthem. Open end questions allow respondents to answer in theirown words. Openend questions often reveal more because theydo not constrain respondents answers. Openend questions areespecially useful in the exploratory stage of research, where theresearch is looking for insight into how people think a certain way.The questionnaire should use simple, direct, unbiased wording and

should be pretested before it is actually used. In this case too, questionnaire method was followed to collect primary data with

    respect to the project.

Which was finally implemented after pre testing closed end, multiple choice questions where followed after pre testing and twodifferent type of questionnaires where used (for details see

appendix) closed end multiple choice questions where used so thatminimum time of consumers / respondents is consumed.

    CONTACT METHODS:

Once the sampling plan has been determined, the marketingresearcher must decide how the subject should be contacted. Thechoices are mail, telephone , or personal interviews. Telephonecould not be an effective medium for getting the first handresponses pertaining to the study. For the purpose of the market

survey , I design the research based on primary data.

For the collection of primary data, I designed the structured samequestionnaire for all. Secondary data will be used to supplementthe primary research and in terms of capacity and profile of

package drinking water industry. Method was adopted to collectthe data related to the study.

    HOW IT WAS DONE:

1)Research problem for the present studyAnalyzing the market of Cyber Cafe.

    2) The research plan

The research plan is designed for gathering the neededinformation. Designing research plan calls for definitionson the information (data) sources , research approach, research instruments, sampling plan and contact method.

    3)Data Source

The plan calls for gathering both the secondary and

primary data. Secondary data already exists, having beencollected for some other purpose, while primary dataconsists of original collected for the specific purpose.

    a) Primary Data: In order to have first handinformation to know the perception, preference andliking of the customers visiting various cafe shopsall these persons are also interviewed to know theirinterest and attitudes about the facilities and the

services (promotional and other benefits) that thecaf owner provide them.

    b) Secondary Data: secondary data for the werecollected from:

    Internet.Newspapers, journals & Business Magazines.

    STEPS IN RESEARCH DESIGN PROCESS:

    1) Define the research problems

Research problem definition involves specifying theinformation needed by management.

    2) Estimate the value of the information to be provided bythe research

Descriptive research is characterized by high degree offlexibility tends to rely on convenience sample

    3) Select the data collection method (s)

Survey research, information directly from cyber cafe.

    4) Select the measurement technique

Questionnaires, instrument for asking information directly from the caf owner on the basis of question asked byinterviewer

    5) Select the subject (Primary considerations)

  • 8/7/2019 Biswajit project

    28/51

Population, sample frame, sampling unit, sampling method(non-probability), sample size, sample plan and execution.

    6) Select the analytical approach

Data analysis involves converting a series of recordedobservations into descriptive statement and/or inferencesabout relationship.

    7) Evaluate the ethics of research Ethically sound research considers the interests of thegeneral public, the respondents, the client and the research

profession as well as those of the researcher.

    8) Estimate time and financial costTime refers to the time needed to complete the project. The

financial requirement is the monetary representation ofpersonal time, computer time and material requirements.

    Research Plan:

    1) Area: since my research was customer requirement in theinternet cafe shops in the Assam State. Therefore all thecomposite shops were included in the area of my research.

    2) Respondents: I visited at least every caf shop of therespective areas. My respondents were the owner of the shops,

salesman.3) Methods of collection: for the collection of the data I adopted

questionnaire method. For the purpose I had prepared aquestionnaire and went to the respondents with that. Myresearch was related to customer requirement in cafe , sothat in same places a lot of problems are created to collectionthe data, therefore instead of questionnaire I adoptedinterview method so that I could make my respondents feel
