NORTH DAKOTA STATE NO. 1 IN FINAL FCS COACHES, SPORTS NETWORK POLLS By The Sports Network To move forward to North Dakota State’s back-to-back FCS naonal championships, you have to move backward with coach Craig Bohl. Bohl was an assistant coach during Nebraska’s big run in the mid-1990s, including two of the Cornhuskers’ naonal championship seasons. Bohl’s NDSU squad, having beaten Sam Houston State for the second straight season in the FCS tle game this past Saturday, was a unanimous selecon on Monday on all 142 ballots of The Sports Network FCS Top 25. The Bison finished with their sec- ond straight 14-1 record and had three more wins than any other FCS team. “A tremendous amount of sacrifice and dedicaon by everybody in our organizaon,” Bohl said following the 39-13 triumph over Sam Houston State. “It was certainly a long process. I also want to acknowledge my mentor, Tom Osborne, during the me that I had a chance to coach for him at Nebraska. We had an opportunity to do this, and it’s very hard to do. And the legacy that he’s leſt, leſt a blue- print for me personally on, OK, what were the key points to put things in place for a program standpoint to get it done. And once that was in place, then I think our assistant coaches and our players have done a phenomenal job, everything from our strength and condioning staff to assistant coaches and the whole process. “It’s very rewarding and it’s extremely hard to do,” added the 2012 Eddie Robinson Award winner as FCS coach of the year. Quarterback Brock Jensen and running back Sam Ojuri combined on five touchdown runs and the defense intercepted two Sam Houston State quarterbacks a combined four mes in the championship game win. The Bison, the Missouri Valley Football Conference champions, were ranked No. 1 in 11 of the 14 polls this season, but, of course, the final one is what maered most to them. With nearly all of their key start- ers returning next season, including All- America first-team selecons Billy Turner at leſt tackle and Marcus Williams at cornerback, the Bison will be favored to become just the second team to win three straight FCS tles. Appalachian State set the standard from 2005-07. Sam Houston State (11-4) was voted second on 128 of the 142 bal- lots. Coach Willie Fritz’s Bearkats, the Southland Conference co-champions, finished behind North Dakota State in the point total, 3,550 to 3,386. The 1930s...Only one man guided NDSU in the ’30s and it was Finnegan...NDSU won another NCC title in 1935 and had three 7-victory seasons...Roman Meyers, Fritz Hanson and Ernie Wheeler were tabbed All-Americans.

The 1940s...The reign of Finnegan ended and World War II came...So did a downturn in Bison fortunes...NDSU recorded just one winning season (5-3 in 1946)...That was the year Cliff Rothrock made two All-America teams at center.

The 1950s...Victories continued to be hard to come by for the Bison in the 1950s as just two 5-4 campaigns were charted as winning seasons...Still, Glenn Hill and Curt Quenette earned All-America honors and numerous players were All-North Central Conference...Four dif-ferent men guided NDSU fortunes during that span.

The 1980s...Success surpassing that of the late 1960s induced one pundit to call this "the Decade of the Bison in NCAA Divi-sion II football"...NDSU made eight NCAA playoff appearances in the 10 years including six straight from 1981 through 1986...NDSU won the national title four times (1983, 1985, 1986 and 1988) while appearing in six national title games (2nd in 1981 and 1984)...The 1989 campaign marked the 25th winning season in 26 years and gave the Bison a phenomenal 232-54-4 record over that span...Rocky Hager became the third head coach of the decade in 1987, following Don Morton and Earle Solomonson, and all won national championships...NDSU won 103 games in the decade (103-20-2), the best in college football.

The 1990s...The success of the 1980s rubbed off on North Dakota State's first team of the 1990s...That club opened the decade with a perfect 14-0 chart in 1990 and the fifth national championship in eight years...All told, the Bison won eight national championships between 1965 and 1990...NDSU ap-peared in six NCAA playoffs in 10 years in the '90s...Bob Babich replaced Rocky Hager in 1997...The veer offense died a quiet death, but the Bison continued to have success, going 25-9 in the final three seasons of the 1990s.

The 2000s...The 2000s opened with a bang as the first team of the new century rolled to a 10-1 regular season and advanced to the NCAA semifinals before falling to the eventual national champion, Delta State...NDSU’s first game with a Division I-AA team in two decades was canceled in 2001 due to the 9/11 attack...Craig Bohl took over in 2003 and guided the Bison to an 8-3 record in their first year of Division I-AA football ... The Bison won their first conference title as a NCAA Division I program -- the 2006 Great West Football Conference championship ... NDSU began play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2008 .. The Bison advanced to the 2010 NCAA FCS quarterfinals, dropping an overtime decision at Eastern Wash-ington ... NDSU hosted its first-ever NCAA playoff game in the Fargodome vs. Robert Morris in 2010 ... NDSU won its first national title since 1990, topping Sam Houston State 17-6 for the 2011 crown ... NDSU repeated with a 39-13 win over Sam Houston State for the 2012 title.
