Message from the Pre/Primary School

April opened with PE and Health Week. Mr Huegel, Head of PE, and his team organised a superb sports week focusing on ‘Polluting Our Bodies,’ and how sleep, food, exercise and water help to combat pollution in our bodies. The week commenced with the Cross Country run in the Belgrade Forest. The Year 5 and 6 race went well and gold, silver and bronze medals were given out to the first, second and third place winners in each year group. Unfortunately, the Year 3 and 4 race wasn’t as successful as the place of the start line has become confused. The Year 3 and 4 race was held after the Spring holiday and second time around was completed successfully. A Healthy Bake Sale was organized jointly by the Primary Student Councils and PTA. They raised a substan-tial amount of money for our chosen charities. Thank you to all for supporting our charitable causes so kind-ly. The week continued with exciting sporty events each day. A morning ‘Wake Up’ walk/ run was organized in the Botanic Gardens followed by dancing in the gym! Inter house football and basketball tournaments were arranged at lunchtime. A judo session, a Fitness Challenge and a Step Aerobics class took place as well. The children, and some members of staff, participated in the interhouse biathlon relay which incorporated one member running and one swimming for house points. Our traditional Spring Bonnet Parade was held with the theme of PE and Health. Some truly inventive hats were displayed; for example hats decorated with a football pitch, a badminton racket and shuttlecocks, and table tennis balls. The Creative Arts team judged the best hats and awarded prizes. Our traditional egg hunt had to be held in the classrooms rather than in the Botanic Gardens as planned due to bad weather. However, all the children enjoyed finding an egg in their other year group classroom. A huge thank you goes to the Ferrero company for sponsoring the event and the PTA for hiding the eggs. As our Guiding Statements inspire, we encourage all members of our community to be life long learners and to strive for continuous improvement. To this end, the teachers met on the first day of the summer term to discuss current issues in the Pre and Primary School. The Curriculum Coordinators lead discussion on the EYFS Curriculum, and the revised version of the National Curriculum for the Primary School. The Primary School Middle Leaders lead seminars on the changes to be made in English, Maths, Science and ICT for Sep-tember 2014. And finally, thank you for attending our Parent Teacher interviews to discuss your child’s progress at school. We hope you enjoy this month’s Newsletter. Best regards Amanda Ilhan Richard I’Anson Pre and Primary School Deputy Director Pre and Primary School Director

Alkent Campus Performance. E-I-E-I Oops! The whole barnyard were dancing as Alkent performed E-I-E-I Oops! Old MacDonald, Mrs Old MacDonald, The Farmer in the Dell and Mrs Farmer in the Dell had a big problem. Their beautiful cow wouldn’t moo! The crazy pigs tried to help by telling jokes. The lost sheep were too sad to help because they had lost Bo Peep, whilst the roosters and cute chicks were too busy showing off! Eventually, the donkeys came to the rescue and encouraged the cow to moo by saying nice things to him. With lots of help from all of the farm-yard and audience our beautiful cow began to moo. The farmyard ani-mals danced to celebrate and great fun was had by all! Yahoo! The children and staff would like to thank all of our parents who helped make our wonderful costumes and scenery – it all looked fantastic! Alison Guzel

Etiler Campus—Field Trip

Field Trip to the Ice Skating Rink

On Wednesday the 9th of April,2014, the Etiler Campus students and teachers, went to

the Ice Skating Rink.

When we arrived we were split into shoe-size groups. After that we lined up in

queues to get boots, helmets, and knee pads. I was very excited however, I knew other

people were nervous as they had not skated before so I reassured everyone. After we changed

into our skates, we were told simple instructions and out we went to the rink.

As the door opened I could feel the cool air. I became more and more excited. Stepping on

the rink the sudden slippery ice got me a little nervous, but a few moments later I felt as com-

fortable as I would have on the floor. Skating was really fun and exciting. Everyone was hav-

ing fun, from the people who couldn’t skate to the people who could. Teachers were helping or

also having fun skating and slipping. After about 30 minutes, even the people who couldn’t

skate were coming out to the middle, whizzing around.

Following the skating we went to a public park and had a pleasant picnic in the perfect

weather.

The ice skating trip was a huge success and everyone had a great time. My opinion is

to do this every year since it is a trip where everyone can join and have merry time.

The Ice Skating Trip

During Sports Week the whole of Etiler Campus went to Silivri Kapi ice rink.

At the rink all the boots were the same colour but some of the helmets were different colours. The knee pads were big-

ger that the elbow pads.

We skated with the music on. At first I held onto the railing so I could protect myself from falling. When I felt confi-

dent, I started ice skating without holding on to any walls. I felt only a tiny bit nervous that I would fall down. My

knees sometimes hurt a bit when I did fall.

When everyone told us to go we changed back into our shoes, gave back our skates and returned the knee pads and

helmets. Then we went to lunch at the nearby park.

I hope we can go again because it was fun.

Etiler—Egg Hunt

The Great Spring Egg Hunt was held after classes had spent time decorating their hard boiled eggs in a class

competition/display. There were lovely Faberge style eggs and dyed eggs and eggs decorated with ‘egg tat-

toos’ and felt pen.

They were so lovely that they could not be used for the egg and spoon race! This was held in the garden,

even though it was drizzling with rain. The classes lined up and had a relay. The concentration was amaz-

ing!

In between these activities the traditional Spring Egg Hunt was held. Some of the campus mums came to

hide the plastic egg cases while the children were outside at break. Then the children lined up in Houses be-

fore going off two at a time to find 3 cases each. When they had them, they came running back to tag the

next two and collect their chocolate egg.

Maple was the flat out winner. Well done!

Junior Girls:

Our junior girls finished 3rd in this year's volleyball tournament at IICS on Wednesday 9th April. They

worked hard as a team to encourage each other through some difficult matches. Their sheer determination

during the last few games helped them to reach the semifinals which they only lost by a few points in the third

set. Well done ladies!

Miss Bell

Senior Boys:

Gutted.....that is the only word! After being UNBEATEN throughout the day in the league and believing we

could take 1st place, it was decided that the top 2 teams of the day should play off for the winner’s tro-

phy. We had to play an IICS team that we had beaten convincingly earlier in the day but the final match was

a wee bit different. IICS held us to very tight sets; we won one, they won one and the third set was neck and

neck finishing at 27-26. This was by far the most determined and positive group of senior boys we have had

in a long time whose sheer energy and excellent team work was commented on by other players and coach-

es. You guys were amazing. I don't care what the trophy says, you were definitely the winners that day on

attitude alone!

Environment Committee

Compost it! Compost helps improve soil so it holds more water and plants grow better.

Allow grass clippings to stay on the lawn, instead of bagging them. The cut grass will

decompose and return to the soil naturally. Food scraps and kitchen waste also make

good compost, and you save money on fertilizers or other additives.

Proper maintenance reduces waste! Keep your appliances in good working order and

follow the manufacturer's suggestions for operation and maintenance. Shop for prod-

ucts with high consumer satisfaction and fewer breakdowns. If kept in good working

order, your appliances should last a long time and not end up as waste before their

time.

Don't trash it - reuse it! Be creative as you look for new ways to reduce the amount or

kinds of household waste. Give cardboard tubes to pet hamsters or gerbils. Plant seeds

in an egg carton. Make a flower pot out of a plastic ice cream tub. By thinking creatively,

you will often find new uses for common items and new ways to recycle and reduce

waste.

Just bag it! Help protect the environment when you shop. Keep reusable bags on your

car seat or near your door so they are easy to grab when you go. And you can even

combine shopping bags - just tell the cashier that you don't need a bag, then put all

your purchases together in one bag just be sure to hang on to your receipts!

Wait for the storm to pass! Don't fertilize before a rain storm. Your fertilizer - along

with your money - can just wash off your lawn and down the storm drain. Fertilizer run-

off can pollute rivers, lakes, and bays, and cause problems in recreational areas or fish-

ing grounds. Check the weather forecast before you head out, and wait for the storm to

pass.

Travel green! Look for hotels that encourage guests to use less water or energy. Hang

up your towels to dry so you can use them again. Use the sheets more than a night or

two. When you go out, look for local foods and souvenirs to reduce transportation. Be-

fore you go, unplug your computer, DVD player, and other electronics, and turn down

your thermostat.
