Welcome

Bishopstrow Online has been developed in response to the coronavirus

pandemic, with all schools in the UK required to close in mid-March 2020

Bishopstrow Online offers much more than a remote learning experience.

The Programme covers academic, cultural, social and boarding

preparation, as well as wellbeing and fitness. Face-to-face lessons are

delivered in live, interactive classrooms by Bishopstrow’s professionally

qualified teachers. Students are able to interact with their teacher in the

video classroom as in a traditional classroom, raising questions, sharing

comments or making contributions

Bishopstrow Online delivers a fully interactive Bishopstrow education to

students around the world. Our unique online programme offers the best

of Bishopstrow’s Junior, Middle and Senior College Programmes,

preparing international students for onward progression to boarding

schools in the UK and other English-speaking markets

Like the College’s traditional programmes, Bishopstrow Online is aimed at

international students who wish to improve their English, whilst following a

traditional programme of academic subjects

Real-Time Online Learning

Students are taught in timetabled classes, Monday to Friday.

Each day, students login through the College’s online platform,

Microsoft Teams. When it is time to enter a lesson, the student

clicks on the relevant class and joins the classroom, where

fellow students and the teacher are waiting

After greeting students, the teacher delivers the face-to-face

lesson through an interactive teaching area

During each lesson, students communicate with the teacher

and each other, through a microphone, webcam and keyboard.

A wide variety of media is available, including voice, text (chat),

whiteboard, pre-recorded videos, presentations, screen sharing

and co-web browsing. Students can be asked to work through

specific examples, share their work, contribute to in-class

activities, or even lead a class discussion

Teachers constantly monitor students’ interaction and respond

to general questions or privately to individual queries

The Programme also includes regular assemblies with a focus

on PSHE, daily ‘prep’ (homework) and wellbeing and fitness

sessions

Academic

Classes are divided between the Junior College Programme (7-11

years), the Middle College Programme (11-14 years) and the Senior

College Programme (14-17 years)

Class sizes are small, with a maximum class size of 8 for English

and 12 for subject classes, in line with traditional classes on campus.

Lessons take place using the College’s online platform and are

delivered by the existing Bishopstrow College teachers, using the

College’s standard timetable

The timetable comprises 25 hours of academic tuition and prep for

Juniors and Middles and 30 hours of academic tuition and prep for

Seniors. Students also benefit from weekly tutorials

Those students continuing at the College after Term 3 are placed in

the appropriate class in Bishopstrow Online, based on their progress

and attainment level. New students are placed based on their

English level and performance in the interview

Progress is evaluated and recorded based on attainments in class

work and assessments

At the end of the Programme, all students are presented with a final

Individual Learning Plan (academic report), detailing their progress in

English and academic subjects. The Individual Learning Plan also

references the CEFR Level. Students are also presented with a

Course Certificate upon completing the Programme

Wellbeing and Fitness

Wellbeing and fitness form an integral part of a

British boarding school education

For all students enrolled on Bishopstrow Online,

the more formal English and academic classes

are complemented by a programme of wellbeing

and fitness

These sessions are delivered using a pre-

recorded video, with a requirement for students

to produce a piece of work to show what they

have accomplished. For example, a fitness

session may come with a requirement for the

student to produce a video of themselves

performing the same routine

In addition, all students have a weekly online

1:1 Wellbeing Tutorial, focused on a bespoke

exercise programme. Students are required to

follow this personalised programme throughout

the duration of the time enrolled

Pastoral Care

We take our students’ safety and welfare

extremely seriously. All students benefit from a

weekly online 1:1 Progress Tutorial, where

teachers provide feedback on progress,

engagement and attendance. This Tutorial also

provides the opportunity for students to share

any issues or concerns relating to their classes,

the online platform and overall progress

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (‘PSHE’)

education is covered in daily assemblies

Fully-qualified staff are also available to discuss

pastoral matters with students, whilst the

College’s management team are also available

to provide guidance and advice

Operation of the College’s system of ‘Stars’

(linked to Bishopstrow’s Five Virtues) provides

the opportunity to recognise the contribution of

students, with a weekly Celebration Assembly to

recognise Student of the Week and House of

the Week
