BISHOP’S VISITATION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 3:00 P.M. October 2016 Calvary Life We welcome The Rt. Rev. Susan Goff to Calvary on Sunday, Oc- tober 9 at 3:00 p.m. for a service of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. We are delighted to have Bp. Goff with us and look for- ward to spending a little time with her. Because we have an after- noon visitation, there will be no morning services or education hour. For the reception following the service we are asking for donations of finger foods and desserts. Think sandwiches, veggies, fruit, dev- iled eggs, shrimp, dips, crackers and cheese, etc. Desserts of brownies, cookies or anything that is easy to eat without a utensil would be most welcome. Please bring your donations to the parish hall by 12:00 noon on October 9, so the hospitality folks have time to plate and set up. If you wish your plate or container returned, please put your name somewhere that can be easily seen. If any- one can stay afterward to help clean up, it would be most appreci- ated. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 12:30 P.M. Please join us in the breezeway between the church and parish hall this Sunday, October 2 at 12:30 p.m. for a Blessing of the Animals. ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC and Release of the Monarchs

Calvary’s annual outdoor Eucharist and parish picnic was held at Margie and Andy Miller’s home in Browntown on September 11. It was a wonderful experience. The weather was perfect and the setting was beautiful. To top it off, several butterflies were ready to be tagged and re-leased. Margie and Andy have acted as surrogate “parents” to a number of Monarch caterpil-lars and pupa, including many from our own Monarch Garden at Calvary.

StewEARTHship

Gracious God, seasons pass with such regularity that I take them for granted. Teach me to ex-perience the seasons fully, to breathe the air deeply, to taste the food, and to live at the heart of the changing earth. Amen Earth Prayer - Autumn By Edward Hays O sacred season of Autumn, be my teacher, for I wish to learn the virtue of contentment. As I gaze upon your full-colored beauty, I sense all about you an at-homeness with your amber riches. You are the season of retirement, of full barns and harvested fields. The cycle of growth has ceased, and the busy work of giving life is now completed. I sense in you no regrets: you’ve lived a full life. I live in a society that is ever-restless, always eager for more mountains to climb, seeking hap-piness through more and more possessions. As a child of my culture, I am seldom truly at peace with what I have. Teach me to take stock of what I have given and received, may I know that it’s enough, that my striving can cease in the abundance of God’s grace. May I know the con-tentment that allows the totality of my energies to come to full flower. May I know that like you I am rich beyond measure. As you, O Autumn, take pleasure in your great bounty, let me also take delight in the abun-dance of the simple things in life which are the true source of joy. With the golden glow of peaceful contentment may I truly appreciate this autumn day.

Rector’s Discretionary Fund On the first Sunday of each month, the loose offering, that is, gifts exclusive of payments toward a member’s annual pledge, is desig-nated for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund. Gifts to the fund may be made at anytime by writing a check to Calvary Episcopal Church and designating in the memo line “Rector’s Discretionary Fund.”

Dedication Concert The Calvary Ringers are preparing to “ring your bell” at our Handbell Dedication Con-cert on Sunday, October 23, at 3:00 p.m. in our sanctuary. A reception will follow the con-cert in Wagner Hall. We are celebrating the purchase of additional bells that were gifted to us from the “music & honorarium fund” We now have 4½ octaves at our disposal. The perform-ance will include spirituals, a “big band” tune and even some Rock & Roll! Our group has grown in per-sonnel, equipment and the difficulty of music we play. The handbell choir re-hearses every Wednesday from 5:00 —6:15 p.m. We can always make room for more ring-ers! Come hear us at the concert on October 23 and contact Kim Kiec or any member of the choir, if you are interested in joining us.

Kim Kiec, Handbell Director

Our sympathies are extended to the Family of Dr. David E. Moreman, who died on Mon-day, September 12, 2016. A burial service was held on Saturday, September 24, at

11:00 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church. “May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon them.“

Volunteer Opportunity The Calvary Kids Backpack Food Program is up and running again. Since school started in August the team has been pack-ing an average of 585 meals per week. The team needs volunteers to keep up the fast pace of ordering food, planning menus, packing and distributing packs to the kids

at Ressie Jeffries Elemen-tary School. We are looking for volun-teers to work in the pack-ing room at Weber Hall on Thursdays and to help with shopping and food shelving.

Please contact Larry Elliott at [email protected] (540 631 1382 ) for the de-tails. We need to spread the joy of doing this work and working with the kids at RJES!

Below is correspondence submitted by Frank Baxter between himself and Seth Kapaka. Questions and answers are in italics.

+ Dear Brother in Christ, Seth, It was such a relief to hear that our Brothers and Sis-ters are safe from the turmoil near you. Late news today is the your President was visited by a represen-tative from the Security Council and agreed to 4,000 troops, but for how long and from what country still to be determined. Sounds like the former Vice Presi-dent may not be returning. South Sudan and it's people are very special to us. We see so much poten-tial in the future. We pray that the peace agreement just a little over a year old will be a lasting one. We had a very productive meeting on the subject of education for the youth of St. Paul Parish. There were many questions, which I agreed to talk with you about. • As we understand, the current education available is

the primary school. How many years do the students study in the current schools?

• What is the age of the youth that would be prepared to

continue their education away from home? • Would this be a secondary school or a trade/technical

school? • What countries would the student travel to for educa-

tion? • How many years would a student study to be a

teacher? • What are some of the other types of education the stu-

dent would seek? • What is an estimate of the cost for a student studying

away from home for one year? • How many years would they need to study to receive a

diploma?

• Would there be an agreement with the student that he/she would return for a period of time to help others?

• We were discussing a new slogan for this effort; maybe

something like: “EDUCATE - GRADUATE - CELEBRATE ...Support St. Paul's Parish YOUTH, Diocese of Ibba”

Do you have any ideas? It sounds like your area has enough food to eat, which is a blessing. We extend our prayers to the Christians in St. Paul Parish, and I send my prayers to you and you family. May our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ protect you all. Your brother in Christ Jesus, Frank

+ Dear Frank, Greetings back to you and our brothers and Sisters at Calvary Church in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. It is a pleasure to write back to you and our brethren at Calvary Church. We are safe and continuous with prayers for peace in our area and the entire Country which we all believe that God will do something for it since He need peace among his people. It is so amazed and excited to hear the good news from you about the productive meeting on the sub-ject of education for the youth of St. Paul Parish, which intends to prosper our community. This is real Love and much concerns form you to us here. As I shared with you the only direction for us to go for-ward is through education to build portable and re-sponsible people who would carry holistic mission in order for better transformation of our society. We are very happy to answer some of the questions raised for better understanding: • Yes of course the current education level available we

have at St. Paul parish is primary school and pupils study there for 8 years according to the south Sudan educational syllabus.

• Students aged 15 years and above are those ones who would prepare to go and continue with their education away from home hence they are able to stay far and cope with life very well.

• It can be Secondary school for those who finish primary school and technical or tertiary education to others who complete their secondary schools.

• Uganda and Kenya are those Countries from east Afri-can where easily the students can travel to for education because many people here do take their children to those countries for education. In Uganda we have Christian renewal University while in Kenya we have Church army Africa a branch of St. Paul University of Nairobi all these have various fields of study.

• To become a teacher it takes 3 years course to obtain diploma.

• Other types of education that the students would seek include: Nursing training, vocational training, life skills training e.g. Agricultural, masonry tailoring, carpenter, Driving, computer training among others.

• An estimate of the cost for a student studying away from home for one year varies from different institutions and level of education it can cost 2000 USD – 2500 USD expenses include tuition fees, feeding allowance, accom-modations, transport, immigration clearance and mate-rials needed during the training. The school can be con-nected for sharing of information.

• Most diploma courses take 2-3 years for completion (Teachers training is usually 3 years).

• Absolutely there must be mutual understanding and an agreement between St. Paul Parish administration with the student that he/she would return for a period of at least 4-5 years work with the Church to help others also come up and changes come to our area. We think these can happen because our Christians are committed to work in the church and for their community as they are from the same community and their families.

• The slogan: EDUCATE - GRADUATE - CELE-BRATE ...Support St. Paul's Parish YOUTH, Dio-cese of Ibba is excellent and perfect. We support it to remain the way it is because it has sounding meaning..

• In fact our area has food and is an agricultural area.

But only that we lack technical people who would advice

on how to exploit the opportunities and also the work-ing tools to help cultivate more areas for some income. what we product now is only for our food consump-tion and this area is so fertile.

We remain faithful for you and to God. May our Lord open ways for better future and bless you all. Yours brother in Christ, Seth Kpaka
