Quovadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. For many, setting aside any definite time for prayer during the day may seem all but impossible, especially if we are talking about ten or fifteen uninterrupted minutes. Persistence in praying always might need to take the form in our lives of developing the habit of being aware of God’s abiding presence and blessings even in our busyness. It might mean that we learn to catch little moments for prayer (like we sometimes are able to catch moments for catnaps)--while driving to pick up the youngsters or waiting in a checkout line. The place and manner of prayer are not nearly so important as the fact that we pray--always and without ceasing.
During the month of October the Universal Church prayerfully reflects on the call to build God’s Kingdom through Missionary activity and heightened awareness of the need for more expansive Evangelization Efforts. The work of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith enables our Roman Catholic Church to proclaim the saving message at every corner of the earth. This is a fundamental part of our identity to go and share the good news. Thank you for your generous prayerful support of this missionary effort. We are also called to struggle with the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life at every level from conception through natural death. It is not always easy to embrace this teaching, especially when we begin to put it with the face of someone who is suffering. As New Jerseyans we must struggle in a special way with this teaching and the on-going pursuit of “for profit” scientific research that uses embryonic stem cells that are primarily procured through abortions. This is a complicated issue. However, there is so much
that can be advanced with the use of stem cells that are procured through more ethical and non-life threatening means. Please continue to pray for a greater respect for all human life from conception through natural death.
We are now in the full swing of Fall. The activities abound. Allergies are flaring up. Heaters are being cleaned and readied for what some are predicting as a rather severe winter from a climate perspective. Take some time to enjoy the Fall colors and the chill in the air. This is also a time in our church year when we reflect on the call to be good and faithful stewards of the many gifts God has given us. If you have not already done so, please make time to prayerfully reflect on your Stewardship of Treasure to enable our parish community to meet its obligations and fulfill its mission. Many thanks to all those who have already made a pledge in the Faith to Move Mountains Diocesan Capital Campaign. We continue to move toward our minimum goal. We need you to participate this week. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
Preparations are underway for the Annual Halloween Halls event. Lots of preparation makes this a great experience for the children of our parish community. The Advent Pancake Breakfast is also on the radar of planning. Consider getting involved in this annual community building event. I would like to extend a special greetings to all of our homebound parishioners who are united with us in prayer. Let us remember these parishioners who sacrificed through the years so that our parish community and the facilities we enjoy could be established and sustained. Have a great week. The Endowment Campaign hopes to raise a minimum of $75,000,000 in gifts & pledges.
Every parish has been assigned a financial target in order to meet the long term financial needs of the Diocese of Trenton, its 107 parishes, Catholic Schools and Diocesan ministries.
Frequently asked questions continued: How will my parish benefit from the campaign?
Each parish will receive 30% of the funds raised from its parishioners to be allocated to its own local case. Parishes that exceed their target will receive 70% of those funds raised above their target. Funds collected will be dispersed every six months to both the parishes and Diocesan case components.
How much should we give? Genuine stewardship encourages gifts of equal sacrifice, but not gifts of an equal dollar amount. Ultimately, your thoughtful and prayerful decision will be most appropriate and most appreciated.
The Faith to Move Mountains Campaign will strengthen our Diocesan schools and parishes, support our clergy and seminarians, care for our re red priests, enhance our religious educa on and evangeliza on programs, and expand our social service outreach. In addi on to these projects, St. Mary Parish has been invited to raise a minimum of $1,025,000 (in order to fully fund the projects designated for the parish rebate, the parish goal is closer to $2,250,000.00). Saint Mary Parish will receive 30% of the collected amount (or a minimum of $307,500 if min. goal is reached) that will go toward parish needs. Addi onally, we will receive 70% of all funds collected over our parish target. We are choosing to combine the next three years of the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) with the Faith to Move Mountains Campaign. Below, demonstrates the campaign minimum goals as well as how we will use our share to address significant parish needs. Campaign Goal Parish Share

Life Safety Requirements for Saint Mary Parish Campus - Saint Mary Parish must fully update its security features for the safety of all parishioners. Such upgrades will likely include magne c locks, emergency exit upgrades, and iden fica on cards.
Internal Church Ligh ng - Capital improvements are necessary for maintaining our blessed
physical plant. A por on of the monies raised will improve the church’s ligh ng infrastructure.
Emergency and Stewardship - Saint Mary Parish must improve its financial stability to ensure
uninterrupted and quality service. To do this, Saint Mary Parish will establish a fund to help provide parish support during mes of emergency or financial strain. In the past, the Diocese has provided support in this area; however, it is prudent for the Parish to improve its financial stability.
Parish Share Total $341,250 if minimum goal is reached.
As we move forward with this campaign, it is my hope that our en re community will join together and par cipate in this blessed effort for our Diocese and our parish. I encourage all of you to pray for our success and par cipate to what your means allow for the future of our Church, as everyone will soon have the opportunity to support this graced endeavor. As has been proven so many mes, here at our wonderful Spirit-filled community of Saint Mary; when you give it away, you get it back a hundred fold. Thank you for your con nued prayers and support! “Light Up a Memory”
“Light Up a Memory” has become a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Mary’s and is now in its 9th year, thanks to the support of an enthusiastic community. It is heartwarming to see the hundreds of lights sparkle during the Christmas season. For a contribution of $10.00 per light, people are invited to sponsor a light in memory of someone deceased or in honor of a living person. All of the names will be inscribed in the Light Up a Memory book, which will be displayed in St. Mary’s Gathering Space. A lovely card of acknowledgement is provided with each $10.00 donation.
There will be a tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 10, after the 4:00 Mass, with music provided by St. Mary’s Choir. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the ceremony. These “memories” will glow until the feast of “Little Christmas” on Jan. 6.

Ministry News
When Mary Goss, founder of Yamba Uganda (yambauganba.com), spoke at a Martha Mary meeting last year, the members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry asked what we might do to help. Her answer was that young children have few toys and comfort dolls are really helpful. These are loom-made dolls and our ministry committed to making some for Yamba Uganda's youngest. We went to work and made 45 dolls! We are in the process of getting them to Mary this fall. Members meet once a month Ministry Contact: Kathy Adelman [email protected]

Alzheimer’s New Jersey will be offering some free and local education programs for caregivers who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia.

Communication Tips and Techniques in Alzheimer’s Disease will be offered on Wednesday, October 19th from 10:00-11:00am at the Ocean County Library, Jackson Branch in Jackson.
Celebrating the Holidays When Your Loved One Has Alzheimer’s will be offered on Tuesday, October 25th from 11:00am-12:00pm at Visiting Home Care Service of Ocean County in Toms River.
Healthy Aging: Tips for Your Body and Brain will be offered on Wednesday, October 26th from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Meridian Fitness and Wellness in Hazlet.

The 2017 Mass Intention Book will open on Tuesday, Nov. 1st.
Currently, we are accepting appointments for scheduling multiple date specific Mass Intentions within the 2017 year. Appointments dates and times are:
• Tuesday, Nov. 1st, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm • Wednesday, Nov. 2nd, 10:00 p m to 12:00 pm. • Thursday, Nov. 3rd, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Call and speak to a live person to make an appointment (no messages accepted) between 8:30 am –7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday or Sunday 9 am – 12 pm, with the parish office 732-780-2666.
Please complete the form on the reverse side prior to coming to your appointment (please write legibly).
Additional forms are available in the parish office or on the website. Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so we can
accommodate you properly.
Three intentions are accepted for all scheduled Masses, except for Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark.
Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled before your appointment and you will be asked to choose another date.
The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions so please do not ask them to do so.
Sanctuary Lamps Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Christ Chapel in memory of a loved one who has died or to honor a living person.
These intentions are on a weekly basis starting with the Sunday, therefore a new request will be published each week in the bulletin. There will be a total of 104 Sanctuary Lamp Intentions: 52 weeks of the year for each the Christ Chapel & Church lamps.
The suggested donation for Sanctuary Lamp is $25.
