HUMILITY

Today’s reading from Sirach celebrates what will become the

theme of today’s Gospel: humility. Pride causes us to demand

from others an exalted estimate of our status, but humility

allows us to see things more clearly. It allows us a broader

perspective. Humility promises us the favor of God and the

love of those who know us.

The second reading is a study in contrasts: the giving of the

Law on Mount Sinai and the giving of salvation on Mount Zion.

The Law’s appearance is greeted with solemnity, mystery,

even fear. But Christians are not to be afraid. Coming to God’s

mountain with Jesus, “the mediator of a new covenant,” is a happy, exuberant experience.

The parable in today’s Gospel concerns the danger of pride

and the necessity of humility. The banquet setting, often used

by Jesus, is a symbol of heaven’s abundance and of the fulfill-

ment of God’s promise. The parable is not simply good advice

on how to avoid embarrassment; it is about salvation. - J.S. Paluch Co.

I received an e-mail recently that read: Be KIND-because everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Just think about this for a minute. We all come in con-tact with someone everyday, be it friend or foe, relative or stranger, but just by giving a friendly hello or a pat on the hand may help them realize their worth in God’s eyes and that they can accomplish anything because of His love. So be KIND and acknowledge everyone you meet. What doors could you open just by being kind ?

A Mother asked her eight year old son—‖What did you learn in

Vacation Bible School today?‖ He replied, ―About when God sent

Moses behind the enemy lines to rescue the Israelites from the

Egyptians. The teacher said that when the Israelites came to the

Red Sea, Moses called for the engineers to build a Pontoon

bridge and they all barely got across it in time, because the Egyptians were

right behind them, coming in tanks and Moses radioed headquarters on the

walkie-talkie to send bombers to blow up the bridge and they did and all the

Egyptians were stuck and that‘s how Moses saved the Israelites. His mother said ―Oliver, is that really the way the teacher told the story?‖ He answered

―Well, not exactly, but if I told it her way, you‘d never believe it.‖

HELLO. Many people have asked me to sum up my experience for WYD Brazil and the only word that comes closest to de- scribing every thing is humbling. When you literally have your home on your back and Christ carrying you, what more could you ask for.?

When we arrived in Sao Paulo we stayed with host families. They completely went out of the way to get me medicine for my cough, congestion, runny nose, ear infection, fever and pink eye! The second week when we arrived at Rio it was a whole new experience in itself. The boys and girls stayed in different locations what they consider a block over is more like a mile and a half going uphill and down hill. The girls’ facility had no warm/hot water, no heaters, and to top it off my sister Mayra and I forgot our blankets and sleeping bags. Which again wouldn’t be bad at all except it was winter and everyone packed shorts. We rarely slept, ate, showered, cleaned up, or even used the bathroom. Physically, emotionally and spiritually it was the hardest thing I've ever done. God worked miracles within us and among us. I was part of a traveling band and in no way do I consider myself a singer but I didn’t do it because I sing good I did it because I feel God takes control of my voice and tunes me up. What better way to honor Christ than in music. I went to WYD hoping God would give me a sign on what to do with life and during adoration I just felt great joy and stillness; all that came to mind was Be still and know I am God. I may not know where my life is heading still but I do know Christ will always be the main picture. Brazil may not have been all fun and games but it definitely was so much better, it was humbling, amazing and a little slice of heaven with less walking I hope. Thank you to everyone who prayed every night, or just when we came to mind - they were heard and felt by every single pilgrim. Love, Eren Ochoa (Eren is a college student and former –most-faithful- Life Teen)
