The year is already passing so quickly! I can’t help but reflect on the fact that my life at Bishop Montgomery is filled daily with many surprises, with many gifts, many miracles. Our students make it easy for me to remember that through God’s generous grace wonderful surprises are not just possible, but certain. While we are still “beginning” the year, I want to make sure that I say thank you for your children and for all you do for Bishop Montgomery. I say those prayers of thanksgiving for you every day. The first grading period ends on Friday, October 1 st and teacher grades are due on Tuesday, October 5 th at 8:00 a.m. The first report cards of the year will be mailed by Friday, October 8 th so please watch for them in the mail. Remember that this report card is a progress report of your student’s grade to date. Should you need assistance or further information, please contact your student’s guidance counselor and/or teacher(s). Since our faculty is scheduled to attend a mandatory in-service day at St. Joseph High School in Lakewood on Friday, October 8 th , our students will have a holiday. I hope that they enjoy the day! I want to congratulate Mrs. Laura Fabbri who is celebrating 25 years of service to Bishop Montgomery. She has asked us to delay our official celebration for her until next year—so we will do that—but I wanted to recognize her for her generous years of service to Bishop Montgomery and to so many, many students. Thank you, Mrs. Fabbri! I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the Annual Fall Fundraiser. I realize that this is an additional financial expectation and so I think it is important that I share, as I do every year, that the proceeds from this fundraiser are dedicated to the current year’s operations. Since our charged tuition of $7100 per student is less than the actual cost of this year’s tuition which is $9500, this fundraiser is very important. Obviously we have to find ways to make up for the shortfall in addition to raising money for any new projects for the school. So thank you for all of your efforts for this fundraiser. I am grateful. I ask that you pray for the repose of the soul of Tom Forthun who taught music here at Bishop Montgomery and who was such a wonderful influence on all of his students. Mr. Forthun’s after school program made it possible for students who already played new instruments to learn additional instruments and for students who had no experience to learn an instrument. He certainly made an impact on their “musical” lives, but more important, his gentle, patient, and joyful presence was important to their spiritual lives. One young man came to speak to me of his regard for Mr. Forthun and in the course of our conversation told me that Mr. Forthun changed his life. I encouraged him to write a letter to Mr. Forthun’s wife, Marlene, to share his thoughts. I know that the Forthun family would appreciate your prayers as well during this difficult time. There is a lovely reflection that I think captures the essence of Mr. Forthun and always says something to me about how important it is that I continually work to simplify my life and to maintain perspective about what is really important. I hope that it will offer an opportunity for reflection for you as well.

October 2010

Dear Parents,

It hardly seems possible that I am already composing this letter for the October 2010 Newsletter.

The first grading period ends on Friday, October 1st and teacher grades are due on Tuesday, October 5th at 8:00 a.m. The first report cards of the year will be mailed by Friday, October 8th so please watch for them in the mail. Remember that this report card is a progress report of your student’s grade to date. Should you need assistance or further information, please contact your student’s guidance counselor and/or teacher(s).

Since our faculty is scheduled to attend a mandatory in-service day at St. Joseph High School in Lakewood on Friday, October 8th, our students will have a holiday.

Christ-centered

To live content with small means;

To seek elegance rather than luxury;And refinement rather than fashion;

To be worthy, not respectable;And wealthy, not rich;

To study hard, think quietly, talk gently.

Act frankly; to listen with open heart;

To bear all cheerfully, do all bravely,Await occasion, hurry never;

To let the spiritual, unbidden, and unconsciousGrow up through the common.

This is to be my symphony.

--William Ellery Channing (1780-1842)

Mr. Forthun’s life was certainly his “symphony”.

Please know that my prayer for you is that all of the challenges and activities of the new school year are an instrument of God’s grace to bring you ever closer to your children.

Sincerely,

Rosemary LibbonPrincipal

For students with only an SAT I score, the critical reading average was 528, the math average was 525, and the writing average was 527. For those with SAT I and SAT II Subject Test scores, the SAT I averages were 568 on the critical reading portion, 563 on the math portion, and 567 on the writing portion. These scores are indicative of the dedication of our students and teachers and the overall readiness of our students to succeed at the college level. To give you a better understanding of our matriculation patterns, I have included the breakdown of last year’s self-reported senior

Remember to utilize Family Connection from Naviance. Family Connection is a web based application that enables our counseling office to offer a comprehensive website that you and your student can use to help in making decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked with Naviance, which we use in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date information that is specific to Bishop Montgomery.Family Connection will allow your student to:

• Keep track of the process-Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers

• Research colleges-Compare GPA, SAT scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past.

• College visits- Find out which colleges are visiting our school and when they will be here.• Scholarships- All of the scholarships that we receive in the guidance office will be posted on Family Connection.

Please contact your student’s counselor if you have any questions regarding Family Connection.

FROM THE DISCIPLINE OFFICE...

Medical Appointments/Attendance: pg. 12 Parent-Student HandbookAs a reminder, students who miss school due to a medical absence MUST bring verification from the doctor/dentist when returning to school to ensure that the absence will be regarded as “excused.” Also, please remember to call in the morning of your student’s absence or it will be officially noted as unexcused.

Uniform: pg. 29 Parent-Student HandbookWe are doing all that we can to insure that ill-fitting clothes (pants too baggy or too long, shorts too short, etc.) not be sold to students. Students will be held accountable for any ill-fitting uniform items. Be advised that parents, as primary educators and caretakers for their children, have the final responsibility. The deans are not accepting “but-that’s-the-way-the-uniform-company-sold-it-to-us” type of excuse as a way of justifying ill-fitting clothing. As a reminder, solid white or black socks are required and must extend at least 2 inches above the shoe, shirts must be tucked in at all times, pants must be worn at the waist, and hair style/color should comply with the BMHS policy. Students will be

held in the Deans’ office if a dress code infraction cannot be corrected. Their absence from class will be recorded as unexcused with no make up permitted. BMHS jackets and sweatshirts are the only acceptable outerwear during the school day. Hooded sweatshirts or jackets will not be permitted during the regular school day.

Pick-Up and Drop-Off Sites: Due to the high volume of traffic on Torrance Blvd. after 7:30AM, it will take parents longer to drop-off their students at the drop-off point. To avoid the congestion associated with the traffic on Torrance Blvd., please make an effort to drop-off your students early. Please note that students are allowed to come onto the campus as early as 7AM. Also, please make sure that your students have all their belongings ready to exit your vehicle the moment that you arrive at the drop-off point so that the flow of traffic is not delayed by students having to get their belongings from the trunk of the car. Finally, parents are advised NOT to use the professional buildings east of the school, the Daily Breeze parking lot across the street, or Burger King as pick-up or drop-off sites before and after school. This, of course, would also include carpools. The doctors in the professional

buildings have told us that it is a severe inconvenience when their lots are used for such purposes. Also, the white condominiums located on the west near the front of the school are not to be used for pick-up or drop-off sites. Please keep the driveway clear as you wait to enter the campus. Failure to abide by this request will result in disciplinary consequences for your students. Your cooperation in this matter will be appreciated.

Student ParkingIn an attempt to be courteous to our neighbors, we request that our students who park off-campus do not park on the side streets off Henrietta Blvd. Students, if they choose to, may park on Henrietta Blvd.

Loitering: We are asking parents to please discourage your children from loitering at Burger King before school and after school.

Cell Phones on Campus:Please be aware that although students are allowed to bring their cell phones onto the campus, the students are not allowed to have the cell phones in their backpacks or on their person during school hours. All students must turn off their cell phones and leave them in their

lockers during school hours, which include break and lunch. Students found to be in possession of a cell phone during school hours, whether the phone is turned on or not, will have their phone confiscated and will receive a referral. Furthermore, cell phone use in any of the building is prohibited regardless of the time of day. Confiscated phones may only be picked up by a parent/guardian.

Student Identification CardsStudents are required to have their school identification card with them at all times when they are on campus or at any school related event or activity. A student’s failure to have their school identification card may result in a disciplinary violation. Students who do not have their school I.D. will not be allowed to participate in school dances.

For Students Riding a Bicycle to SchoolBicycle racks are provided on the east-side of campus in-between the Chapel and the First Building. Please make sure your students secure their bikes to the racks using a reliable bike lock and/or cable. Please have your student follow all guidelines concerning bicycle safety including using a “fastened” helmet. The “Helmet Law” is stated below for your perusal.

Section 21212(A) of the California Vehicle Code States: A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Com-mission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.

activities

Hello from the Activities Office!

A couple of important business reminders are outlined for you below:

STUDENT IDs: Every effort was made to ensure that all students sat for an official school photo and were issued a student ID for 2010-2011. However, it is the responsibility of the student to make sure this is so. Students are required to have their ID with them at all times while at school, as well as for admittance to all BMHS events throughout the year.

If a student should lose their ID, it is their responsibility to order a replacement through the Activities Office immediately. The replacement fee is $20. Please remind your student to “guard their card”. Students who do not have their ID with them upon request will risk being given a violation.

PARKING PERMITS: Parking permits were distributed to students who purchased an on-campus parking space for this school year. Permits should be displayed clearly in the car windows during the school day, as outlined in the parking regulations. Cars without permits displayed and cars whose license plate numbers are not registered with the Activities Office will

be ticketed. Please remind your student to abide by the rules they received with the parking application, as tickets are as follows: 1st violation = $10; 2nd violation = $25; 3rd violation = $50. Parking policies will be enforced throughout the year in an effort to provide safety and security for students, faculty and staff.

ACTIVITIESASB and Class Officers have been busy planning and coordinating all of Bishop Montgomery’s activities for this year. The month of September was very busy!

FRESHMAN OFFICER ELECTIONS: Our new class officers will be elected on September 23rd. They will be in office just in time to get the class of 2013 enthused for Spirit Week and Homecoming in October!

HOMECOMING WEEK: Homecoming Week kicked off early this year, and September 20th -25th was filled with lots of spirited activities for the Bishop community! Activities included Spirit Games, Unity Mass, Pep Rally, Homecoming Football Game, Coronation and culminated with the dance on Saturday, September 25th. Thanks to all our ASB and Spirit Squad members for all their planning and preparation to make this an enjoyable week for all.

Students can look forward to the following activities in October and should listen to announcement for more details.

CLUB DRIVE: Our clubs for the 2010-2011 school-year will sponsor a membership drive on Wednesday, October 6th during lunch. If your student is looking for ways to get involved, encourage them to go to the club drive so they can get information on all our clubs and what they do. Club Awareness before the Club Drive will include announcements about all our clubs and will invite students to “visit” club meetings to find out more about them. Lists of BMHS clubs and their meeting dates and times are available in the Activities Office.

BIG LIL’ SIS LUNCH: All senior and freshman girls are paired and the seniors create gift baskets for their little sisters. Big and little sisters celebrated together on October 14th with a special lunch on the upper field provided, of course, by the big sisters. This is always a great way for the freshman girls to meet the seniors and learn more about BMHS!

ALOHA WEEK:The Hawaiian-themed Welcome Frosh

Page 8: Bishop Montgomery High School bmhs · 2010. 9. 22. · Bishop Montgomery High School 5430 Torrance Boulevard Torrance, California 90503 (310) 540 - 2021 parent newsletter bmhs from

activities cont.

Dance has always been a popular tradition at Bishop. ASB has decided to expand on the “Aloha Spirit” and welcome everyone back to the new school year in this style. This week welcomes students, parents, faculty and staff with a variety of new and traditional events: The Welcome Frosh Dance, and a new, exclusive event for our upperclassmen, “After School Knight-mare.”

KNIGHTS OF HONOR AND DISTINGUISHED ATHLETES: Both of these programs were started in an effort to recognize more of our outstanding students.

Students will be chosen throughout the year and presented to the Bishop community so they may be recognized among their peers. A description of each program is outlined below.

Distinguished AthleteCoaches of sports in-season are invited to nominate student athletes for this honor. Students will be selected on the basis of how well they uphold the CIF Athlete’s Code of Ethics. These students place academic achievement at the highest priority, show respect for teammates, opponents, officials and coaches, exhibit fair play, sportsmanship and proper conduct on and off the playing field, and win with character, lose with dignity.

Knights of HonorFaculty are invited to nominate individuals who demonstrate the ideal of a Bishop Montgomery student. The Knight of Honor is recognized by both students and faculty alike as a person of character who exhibits a generous spirit. They are dedicated to their education, committed to and involved in student life and put faith into action

and witnesses to the message of Jesus Christ.

We look forward to recognizing the efforts of our students through these programs and are excited to share them with you each month.

Have a great month!

10th ANNUAL BLACK & GOLD GALA 2010!The Black & Gold Gala will be coming your way on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. Mark your calendars now! As part of the evening’s festivities, we look forward to inducting the latest members of the BMHS Hall of Fame: The Miranda Family (Ed, Linda, Morgan ’00 and Nelson ’03).

AUCTION DONATION COMMITTEE NOW FORMING…Calling all sales people! We need parents to help us solicit donations from local businesses for the upcoming Black & Gold Gala. If you don’t mind visiting local businesses (weekdays or weekends-- your choice) and asking for their support of our event, this is a job for you! Many business owners and

managers, when approached in person, are more than happy to donate on the spot to a local school with a good cause.

This is a fast, fun and EASY way to take care of your PSI requirement! Not only will you be given PSI credit for the time you spend soliciting donations, you will also receive 1 hour for each $15 of retail value for the items/gift cards you receive. For example: If you spend two hours visiting businesses and receive $270 in gift cards and merchandise for your efforts, your PSI for the whole year is DONE!! (2 hours = $30 PSI credit. Add that to $270 in donations = $300 PSI.) Take a few hours one afternoon and both semesters of your PSI (20 hours or $300 or a combination of both) could be fulfilled for the year!

Once you join our committee, you will be given both a list of local area

of businesses to visit and all of the paperwork you will need to complete a donation. We promise to make it as easy for you as we can!

If you would like to be a part of this essential team for the Black & Gold Gala’s success, please contact the Development Office today. We look forward to hearing from you!

ALUMNI PARENTSIf you are an alumnus of BMHS and you did not receive the new BMHS publication, Veritas, please contact the Development Office so we can add you to our database. You can call 540-2021 ext. 246 or e-mail: [email protected].
