Spring has sprung at Bishop Gorman! The flowers are in bloom, the fields are abuzz, and senioritis is in the air. Our students are concentrating on finishing the school year strong and of course, looking forward to summer. As our diamond anniversary year comes to a close, we are so

proud of all that has been accomplished.

Our sports teams have been exceeding expectations with state championships, awards and national recognition including a national championship by our football team (see page 4 for detailed Sports updates)!

Academically, our students are excelling as well with the Class of 2015 boasting a record number of National Merit Finalists and Commended Scholars along with acceptances into some of the top colleges and universities in the country (see page 7).

At our 33rd annual Knight of the Gael we honored Jack Raftery, Sr. for his long standing commitment to Catholic education and Bishop Gorman High School (page 10). For 50 years the Raftery family has been a staple in our community and the evening was a tribute to them as well as our 60th anniversary.

As part of our 60th anniversary celebration we conducted a capital campaign, legacy now, to raise funds for tuition assistance, faculty enrichment and capital improvements. We are so grateful to those of you who donated to these worthy causes (page 9). This campaign was an important step toward broadening our base of support from our community and educating our constituents on why we need to give back. Hopefully these efforts did not go unnoticed and will help increase participation in our future fundraising.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without our alumni, parents and friends. The outpouring from our community never ceases to amaze. Thank you to all our loyal Gaels!

On December 6, 2014 the Bishop Gorman Gaels football team once again made Nevada state history! Winning their sixth State Title, our Gaels demonstrated once again that hard-work and perseverance leads to victory! Playing against the Reed Raiders, the Gaels took the win a score of 70 to 28. They finished the season 15-0 and ranked #1 in the Nation. Several of the Gaels received end of season and All-State awards. The biggest award went to

quarterback, Tate Martell '17, who was named the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year. Cordell Broadus ’15 played in the Under Armor All American game and Nicco Fertitta ’15 (Teresa [Haddad] '88 and Lorenzo Fertitta '87) and Alize

Jones ’15 participated in the Army All American game.

The winter sports season has also come to a close. Our teams experienced a great deal of success, bringing home individual awards, league and regional titles, capped off by another state title and national ranking. The men’s basketball team finished the season by winning their final 11 games, and capturing the State Title at the Orleans Arena. It was the 4th State Championship in a row for the team and the 6th in the last seven years.

The Gaels had several individual honors this year. Nick Blair '15 ended his successful Gorman career by being nominated to the McDonald’s All American game as well as being named the State Finals Game MVP totaling 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-54 win against Palo Verde. Chase Jeter ’15 was recently named 2015 Gatorade Player of the Year. He is the fourth Gael in five years to claim the award. Stephen Zimmerman '15 finished his Bishop Gorman basketball career with 114 wins in four years, the most in school history. He also became the first player in Nevada History to win four straight Nevada Large School State Championships. Stephen and Chase were also chosen to play in the McDonald’s All American game on April 1, 2015 at the United Center in Chicago, IL.

BISHOP GORMAN HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO

THREE SQUARE!

During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, Three Square held their annual awards breakfast for their top volunteers of the year. Bishop Gorman High School was right at the top of agencies with the highest number of volunteer hours served! We have many students

who volunteer there on a weekly basis who truly understand the value of their volunteer hours.

As a part of our Bishop Gorman mission statement, we strive to “Create a community where service is valued and celebrated.” Clearly, this partnership with Three Square has helped us to accomplish that goal.

At the awards breakfast representatives for Bishop Gorman included: Tyler Martinez, ’15, Ryan Wofford, ’15, Samantha Acton, ’15, Mr. John Goertemiller, NHS Moderator, and Susie Portz, Christian Service Coordinator.

Lauren Willmore '15, is the creator of the name and the nonprofit organization, Bedtime Books that brings some joy into the lives of many bedridden children in Clark County

hospitals. The mission of Bedtime Books is to support children receiving intensive hospital treatment while promoting literacy.

Lauren has taken it upon herself to alleviate the suffering of hospitalized children by this unique and very important effort. Several times each week, she visits these children in their hospital rooms, talks with them and reads stories to them individually. When she departs, she leaves the book with the child as a gift and as a remembrance of the pleasant time she has spent with each child. She makes more than one hundred visits each month.

This wonderful program was inspired by her own experience as a patient at a young age and her memory of the comfort she received from hearing her favorite story before falling asleep.

Her goal is to let them know that there is hope. “I know the children are touched by the fact that someone outside of their own family really cares about them." In the fall, Lauren hopes to attend either USC, Pepperdine University or UC Berkeley and pursue a career in Social Entrepreneurship.

Br a n d o n Wulff '15 was invited

to participate in the International Power Showcase High School Home Run Derby in Miami, FL. The event took place during Christmas break at the Marlins Park. Not only was Brandon excited to have been invited, but it also gave him an opportunity to participate in Home Runs That Help, an outreach initiative by the Power Showcase to reach out to a patient in our local children’s hospital and help raise money for him/her. Brandon met a nine year old boy, Juan, who is battling leukemia. Juan is currently being treated at UMC. Brandon partnered with Juan in the Home Runs That Help.

Brandon was able to hit 7 home runs, received the award for “Most Consecutive Home Runs” and raised $1500! Brandon will visit Juan and personally hand him the first ball that he hit out as well as a check for the money raised. Brandon loves baseball, but as much as he wanted to go to the Showcase, he really wanted to raise money for Juan even more. He’s met a friend for life in Juan.

Thank you to all those who participated. With your help, we were able to increase the amount of Tuition Assistance

awarded this year and help more current students. THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING THE LEGACY!

Each year a number of Bishop Gorman students sign Letters of Intent to play sports at the next level. One such student from the Class of 2004 was Michael Zaher, here is a look into what he's been up to after his Gorman days.

The Zaher legacy at Bishop Gorman began with his parents Maureen (Higgins) Zaher ’74 and John Zaher ’74. Mike Zaher was born on September 24, 1985 in Phoenix, Arizona. Mike is a 2004 Bishop Gorman graduate and is one of five children along with brothers Sean ’10, Zac ’07 and Joseph ’02, and sister, Alexandra ’08. His grandfather was the late Dr. Gerald Higgins. After Bishop Gorman, Mike attended college on a soccer scholarship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and majored in Political Science.

Mike is a former member of the U.S. U-18 National Team, was listed at #21 in Soccer America's Top 25 recruits list, is a two-time Parade All American, was a member of the

2004 McDonald’s All American team and the 2003 NSCAA/Adidas All American team,

was the Gatorade State Player of the Year in 2004, and was selected to the ESP All Star Team in 2002 and 2003.

During his college years, Mike also played in the USL Premier

Development League, for Boulder Rapids Reserve and the San Fernando Valley Quakes.

He was drafted in the 3rd round in 2008 by the Toronto FC. After a trade, he made his professional debut on July 19, 2008 with D.C. United. On March 16, 2009 Mike signed a developmental contract with the San Jose Earthquakes and from 2010-

2012 he also played with USL Charleston Battery and the Rochester Rhinos.

Mike also dabbled in acting, featured as the leading man in JoJo's music video for her 2006 single "Too Little Too Late."

In 2012, Mike had a life-changing injury. He tore his Achilles tendon and had to have surgery. This would unfortunately end his soccer career. In the fall of 2013, Mike began work with close friends at Jostens as the Regional Sales Rep in San Francisco, CA where he currently resides.

Bishop Gorman Celebrates 33rd Annual

Knight of the Gael

On Thursday, March 19th parents, alumni and friends gathered to honor Jack Raftery Sr. at the 33rd Annual Knight of the Gael. Thanks to our auction donors Gustav’s Master Chef Catering, BSN Sports, The Jewelers of Las Vegas, Thomas & Shawn Jingoli, Echo & Rig, Hakkasan Group, Dr. Julie Alamo-Leon, Dr. Jennifer Mallinger, Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas, STITCHED Lifestyle, and Julie (Von Tobel) Roach ’76.
