FAITH IN FENWICK Dear Fenwick Family Members,

Faith in Achievement A rigorous college-prep curriculum committed to academic ex-cellence, ensures our students are challenged and prepared to

succeed in college and beyond.

Faith In Action Our students spend countless hours in service and touch thousands of lives each year. As alumni, they continue to

impact the community, the nation, and the world.

Faith in Sportsmanship Healthy competition challenges our students to discover their

strengths. Our playing fields reflect not only our student’s athleticism, but respect, integrity and honor. Always.

Faith in the Arts The Fine Arts, Music and Drama programs help students balance the creative processes with technical skills so that they gain the

tools they need to develop their unique artistic voice.

Faith in Tradition As a Catholic high school, we challenge our students to become

young men and women of integrity, educated in faith, for justice, and service to others.

Faith in Goodness and Loyalty These virtues are our foundation and central to everything we

do and everything we hope to be. We strive to be the best school by cultivating young men and women of integrity who honor

wisdom, justice, service, and the pursuit of truth.

Faith in Community Our safe, friendly, positive environment promotes strong moral

character development, respect for ourselves and others. Fenwick is a place where everybody fits in.

Faith in the Individual We promote intellectual, creative, and emotional growth in

our students by providing a structured, supportive learning environment that encourages self-discovery and

social responsibility.

Mr. Arthur Makar ‘68 Executive Director, First for Sight

Fight for Sight Gala, Tribeca Rooftop, NYC , October, 2012

Arthur Makar, Class of 1968 Fenwick is a reflection of the gifts we share.

Student Residence : Salem, MA

Current Residence: New York City

Achievements/Extra Curricular activities participated in at Fenwick:

Debate, Glee Club (before it got pizazz through Glee, which features Alex

Newell, another Bishop Fenwick alumnus), The Wick (School Newspaper). I

received a $250 scholarship from the Saint Benedict Guild at graduation,

which covered one-third of my first semester’s tuition at Boston College.

Postsecondary Education

Boston College, BA (Cum Laude) – Major English/Theatre

Suffolk University. M.Ed. – High Education Administration

Career

Almost 40 years in the nonprofit sector; first as a fundraiser and now as a

nonprofit CEO -- currently Executive Director of Fight for Sight, a 66 year old

organization that provides 250k in annual grants to young eye and vision

researchers. I was appointed an adjunct faculty member at New York

University’s Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising in 2008, where

I teach and mentor the next generation of nonprofit leaders.

Most Recent Achievement:

President, Board of Trustees, Bishop Fenwick High School

If I were a Freshman again: If I knew then what I know now…too many things,

mostly about being more assertive and athletic (I discovered fitness at 32).

What is your favorite Fenwick memory? Mostly memories of individual SND’s who administered a lot of tough love, the late Sister Bernadette Marie Keefe in particular. I

remain friends with other Fenwick faculty to this day.

What would you tell others about the importance of supporting Fenwick? Bishop Fenwick provides a first-rate education. The components of this education – teachers,

administration and technology are costly. One year at Bishop Fenwick is now more than my four years at Boston College. Forty years ago Bishop Fenwick was a stepping

stone for many first generation Catholic students going off to college. I worry that -- for many deserving students -- Bishop Fenwick is simply out of financial reach. If you

area proud member of the Fenwick Family, please consider becoming a new or increased donor. Your gifts support Bishop Fenwick and its Financial Assistance and

Scholarship Programs. Such donations help to make the gift of a Fenwick education a reality for many deserving students, continuing to transform lives, like my own.

I began volunteering at Hogan Regional Center while a student at Fenwick and

returned in 1998, to join the newly formed Human Rights Committee as its

attorney. I am currently serving as Chairperson of the committee which moni-

tors the agency and its staff to insure that the individual’s rights are preserved

in this de-institutionalized model. We volunteer our services to the hundreds

of individuals in state care, who no longer live at Hogan, but in their own

homes within communities all over Northeastern Massachusetts.

“If I were a Freshman again . . .”

I would try not to be so nervous.

What is your favorite Fenwick memory? Laughing and learning at the same time with some really terrific teachers.

What would you tell others about the importance of supporting Fenwick ?

It is important to say THANK YOU in any way you can for the role Fenwick played in your achievements and life. Your appreciation will help the next generation of young

adults enjoy the best high school experience on the North Shore.

How did Fenwick made a difference to you personally?

Fenwick shaped my life by giving me confidence, knowledge, and the best friends you could ever hope for.

“If I were a Freshman again . . .” Jeez, I guess I would have used more Clearasil

and maybe not have been a pain to some of my teachers!

What is your favorite Fenwick memory? There are so many from the football field and basketball court, along with the friendships I made (and still have today). But, if I had to pick one, it would be Operation Charlie. That trip made a huge impact on me, instant credibility to the message Fenwick taught us about what giving back to others can do. Operation Charlie changed me. My biggest priority as a senior homeroom teacher is to give that same opportunity to my students. To witness the difference we make in others lives’ through Operation Charlie embodies the path we challenge our students to follow.

What would you tell others about the importance of supporting Fenwick ? It is so important that as many deserving students as possible receive a Fenwick Education. It

was and continues to be a special place. What the school gave to me is something that I could never place a dollar amount on. I want my own children here, which is another

reason why I support Fenwick. I give what I can with the hope that as many students today receive the same opportunities that I received from Bishop Fenwick.

How did Fenwick made a difference to you personally? First of all, I got a top-notch education. I thrived and succeeded in college because of the work ethic taught at

Fenwick even though I may not have known it at the time. The foundation I received at Fenwick was so important and I realized how prepared our teachers made us for this

next step in our lives. It also, and maybe more importantly, gave me a sense of community and how to give back. I believe our teachers and coaches showed us a path to

follow; how to be good people and how to deal with real issues in life beyond the classroom. There is no question that without my parents, friends and Bishop Fenwick, I

would not be the person I am today. Fenwick taught me about family, how to be a part of something bigger than yourself . That, along with the advice, guidance and

discipline from my parents helped me to become the man I am today, one who is committed to his wife and children and to the future of Bishop Fenwick!
