Amherst Cagers Excel as Sportszone Spartans 6th Grade Elite Wins NH State AAU Championship Catholic University Softball Rizzi Earns Academic All-District Honors WASHINGTON – Junior Megan Rizzi (Mont Ver- non, N.H./Souhegan High School) has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team. CUA’s starting shortstop, Rizzi was selected to the ird Team in District 2. Rizzi leads the Cardinals in hitting this season, with a .412 average. A native of New Hampshire Rizzi carries a 3.36 grade point average as a psychology major. She is a member of the Dean’s List and the Landmark Conference Aca- demic Honor Roll. On the field Rizzi has totaled 42 hits in 35 games for CUA in 2011. She has 12 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 32 runs batted in. She has also scored 30 runs, walked 27 times and carries a .647 slugging percentage and a .527 on base percentage. In addition to her strong offensive numbers Rizzi has registered 51 putouts and 80 assists at shortstop to go along with a .916 fielding percentage. Rizzi is a two time All-Landmark Conference selection and a 2010 All-Re- gion honoree. She was the conference’s Rookie of the Year in 2009 and a first team All-Conference selection last year. For her career Rizzi has totaled a .414 batting average and 136 hits. e Derry Sportszone Spartans 6th grade Elite Red team won the New Hampshire AAU State Champion- ship at the Eastern Sports Center in Plaistow on May 7-8.e Spartans, led by head coach Jason Campbell, swept through the tournament with an undefeated 4-0 record en route to the championship. e Spartans began pool play on Saturday with a convincing 51-36 victory over the NH Gym Rats. Sam Anderson of Manchester led the Spartans with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Clayton Crowell of Amherst added 13 rebounds, and Ryan Boehm of Amherst con- tributed 7 points and assisted 4 baskets. Spartans Elite Red then finished pool play with a 64-35 win over NH Fastbreak. Clayton Crowell scored 32 points and had 17 rebounds, and Eric Brown of Bedford chipped in with 9 points. In the state semi-finals on Sunday, the Spartans de- feated Seacoast 48-33. Clayton Crowell was again the leading scorer for the game with 25 points. Ryan Boehm had 9 points including a 3 point basket and added 5 assists. Eric Richardson of Amherst and Tyler Popp of Londonderry had impressive defensive efforts, with Richardson contributing 3 steals. In the final, Spartans Elite Red prevailed over the Manchester YMCA Warriors 50-47. Cam Reddy of Londonderry converted a critical offensive rebound putback with under a minute remaining and totaled 14 rebounds for the game, and Andrew Spurr of Litchfield scored a 3 point basket and a free throw to insure the fi- nal margin. Clayton Crowell led scoring with 22 points and Ryan Boehm added 9 with a 3 point basket. e State Champion Spartans Elite Red 6th grade squad moves to 14-2 on the season and will be in action next at the Mass Elite Tournament in North Reading, MA.
