Two Hundred And Eighty First Edition
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO HER MAJESTY
QUEEN ELIZABETH the SECOND
The village celebrated The Queen's 90th birthday on her actual birth
date, but there will be numerous other celebrations to follow,
culminating in June with her official birthday.
We thought we should mark the Occasion with this month's front
cover and Elaine Hoyes has kindly drawn this appropriate design for
us to use.
The whole village was invited to Raikes Farm, to join in the National
Beacon lighting ceremony, where an enormous pile of straw bales
had been prepared. The choir led the singing of the National Anthem
and Happy Birthday and a short message from Prince Charles was
read out. There were three hearty cheers from the assembled crowd
and the beacon was lit at 8.30pm precisely (our allotted time). We
were blessed with a fine, dry evening and the nine rockets (one for
each decade of the Queen's life) looked quite spectacular as they
soared upwards.
We all then repaired to the relative warmth of a barn for a welcome
warm drink and a delicious sausage roll. All the children were given
a commemorative medal, a tangible reminder of a special occasion.
Grateful thanks to David and Janet Oxtoby and the Parish Council for
organising such a happy and memorable evening,
Joan Pillmoor
May we please have your articles for the July edition before the 23rd
June. Thank you very much.

Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations
Last Thursday – 21st April the
Queen’s actual Birthday, saw
the first of the Queen’s 90th
Birthday Celebrations in the
Village. It was great to see so
many villagers make their way
up Low Balk Road to Raikes
Farm, and join in the
celebrations. It was a cold
evening but Jack – the Queen’s
envoy, soon got us in order and
a rousing round of God Save
the Queen and the warmth from the Beacon soon got us warmed up
in time to sing Happy Birthday to her majesty and to see the
fireworks against the background of a spectacular sunset. Then on
into David’s barn for a well-deserved cup of Hot Tea or Coffee with
warm sausage rolls and delicious tray bakes (thank you Janet).
In his official capacity as the Queen’s representative Jack then
presented all the children present with a Queen’s 90th
Birthday
Medal. For those village children who were not able to make it to the
celebrations their medal will be distributed to them shortly.
Thanks to all who helped organise and all who attended – for what
was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
There are two further events planned in the Village to mark the
Queen’s official 90th
Birthday. On Saturday June 11th
there will be
a Barn Dance at Westfield Farm, and, on Monday 13th
June there
will be a Right Royal Cream Tea in the Village Hall at 2.30pm. It
would be great to see you all there.
Unbeknown to me I was sent these two appreciations of the
impressive evening we spent at Burton Raikes Farm. I thought they
were both excellent and decided to let you read them both! Editor

VILLAGE LITTER PICK
The “CUPID” day (“Clean Up Please In A Day”) on 10th April was a
great success with a good turn out and luckily a sunny day too! 21
bags of rubbish were collected by over a dozen cheerful volunteers
from the village. Equipment was lent again from ERYCC so we were
all highly visible in our orange jackets, and received quite a few
thumbs-up and toots of support from passers by!
The result was very satisfying to see the village and surrounding
lanes looking beautiful and litter free again – at least for the time
being!! The bus shelter is also being repainted to remove the
unsightly graffiti that has reappeared... so Bishop Burton has
certainly done its bit to “Clean up for the Queen!!!
The volunteers met up at the Altis afterwards for a well earned thirst
quencher! Many thanks to everyone who took part and joined in this
village event which was not only very worthwhile but also very
enjoyable!!
Please keep up the good work to keep Bishop Burton tidy. It makes
all the difference!
Look out for another “C.U.P.I.D” day later in the year!
Thank you all
Trevor Thomas
Many congratulations your hard work is much appreciated – Editor

A WORRYING HAPPENING
A resident in Bishop Burton had for many years a Letter Box
attached to their house for ease of access. This Letter Box
however, was not kept locked and anyone could not only place mail
in the Box but could also remove mail. A week or so ago the resident
received account cards on a number of banks which the resident had
not ordered. A day or two latter a short stocky man was seen
rummaging in the Letter Box and on being questioned said he was
delivering junk mail but before he could be apprehended he ran away
at great speed. The police and banks have been advised and needless
to say the Letter Box removed.
The view seems to be that this was an attempt at identity theft with
the intention of opening bank accounts in the resident's name which
the perpetrator could then access.
Please aware for the need for security of personal mail or for that
matter anything that would allow identity theft.

THE HUT PEOPLE
What a great night the 6th
of March was. We were royally entertained
by The Hut People. As 7pm approached the Village Hall filled up
and nearly 60 of us enjoyed a scrummy aptly named – March Pork
Casserole, and for the veggies amongst us a Chickpea Casserole with
jacket potato. Nicely full we then settled down to The Hut People – a
duo who literally did take us on a musical journey around the world–
I don’t think I have ever seen such musical instruments before, and
what superb sounds they make.
[7]
After a top up of your favourite tipple and a rhubarb and orange
cobbler – with cream of course we were ready for the second half.
This was more taxing as it involved audience participation! But we
soon got the hang of it. There were yet more intriguing and different
percussion instruments – and how exactly did he play that one?. A
thoroughly entertaining evening of great folk music, food and
company.
Our thanks go to Artery and the Rural Touring Scheme without
whom we would not be able to afford such high calibre acts. Thanks
also go to the Village Hall Committee for organising and to Margaret,
Jan, Pam and Sandy for the food, and to everyone else who helped
with the evening, and of course a special thanks to all those who
attended and made it such a great evening.
We hope to be getting more acts in the Autumn – we will see what
Artery has on offer.
If you would like to get involved in the events, all help is greatly
received. Please call Jan on 552364.
Village Hall Committee.
THANK YOU! - Lambing Sunday – THANK YOU!
Many thanks to all of you who volunteered to help keep the village
chaos free on the 6th
March (Lambing Sunday). It was a GREAT
success.
Once again, many thanks to ALL who VOLUNTEERED and to
ERYC for the signs and cones.
Based on the success of this year the format is likely to be repeated
next year. So it would be great to see more volunteers, an hour is all
that is needed.

FRIENDS OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH
Update on Easter Activities
The weather was eventually kind to us on Easter Saturday, so the
activities at the Church all took place and much fun and enjoyment
was had by all! There were tea and cakes aplenty and lots of children
enjoying the egg hunts, egg and spoon racing and craft
activities. After a busy afternoon, all spare hands pitched in to leave
the Church sparkling and clean, ready for Easter Sunday celebrations,
and we all agreed we had enjoyed a very successful afternoon! After
a couple of cash donations, the grand total donated to the Friends
group, amounted to £100.01. Huge thanks must go to all those who
came along and supported this event and of course to those who gave
their time in some way or another.
This event was very much organised by Joy Woodward, so a special
thank you for that Joy! You did the village proud!
Look out for the next Friends event!

NEWS FROM ALL SAINTS
Easter was celebrated with an Easter Egg Hunt organised by The
Friends, then the church was decorated with flowers ready for Easter
Day followed by a wedding on Easter Monday. It is always a
pleasure to see our lovely church full of flowers again after the
austerity of Lent. And now the Union Jack is flying proudly from the
church tower in honour of The Queen’s birthday! In fact we are
looking for a VOLUNTEER to take over flag raising duties, as the
current “flag officer” is having a knee replacement and will be unable
to scale the tower for his duties!! (There is a magnificent view from
the top of the tower!!) ANY OFFERS ??? (please tel. 01964

SUE BROOKS WRITES:-
I recently came across this reference to Bishop Burton in a book by J B
Priestley, published in 1933 and called ‘English Journey’. I think the same
still applies all these years later.
“This south-east corner of Yorkshire which is not on the way to anywhere
but Hull, has a curiously pleasant remoteness of its own…….. There are
some charming villages on the way. One of them – I think its name was
Bishop Burton – gave me the most entrancing glimpse of a pond, old walls
and red roofs. Within a second I had settled and was done with the world:
The bookish hermit of Bishop Burton It was that kind of place, one of those
ten thousand might-be homes.
Well spotted and thank you Sue.

BARN DANCE
It’s a long time since we had a barn dance in the village. But there’s
one coming up at 7.00 am on Saturday 11th
June at Westfield Farm,
courtesy of Sue and Trevor Thomas. It’s to celebrate the Queen’s
Official Birthday and the proceeds will go towards the Kitchen and
Toilets project being sponsored by the Friends of All Saints. The
Hessle Ceilidh Band will provide the music for the evening and their
leader, Pippa King, will guide us through the dances whether you’ve
done this before or not. The tickets will include a bar, entertainment,
and food (fish and chips) and will be on sale from 14th
May. The cost
is £12 for those who are members of the Friends of All Saints’ and
£15 for those who are not. If you or your guest become a “Friend” on
the night of the barn dance then you’ll also be entitled to the reduced
ticket price. On-site parking for cars will also be available. For tickets
and more details, contact: Bryn Jones at [email protected]
or 01964 550255.
FRIENDS OF ALL SAINTS LAUNCH EVENT
The Friends of All Saints
Church was established as a
group late last year. Its objects
are to promote the use of the
church as a community facility
and to help protect the church’s
precious heritage. We raise
funds for special projects that
will help us satisfy these
objects. So far we have
organized an Easter Egg hunt, and in June there will be a barn dance
at Westfield Farm. The Friends have arranged a grand launch event in
the church at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 24th
May. The Chair of the Friends
– Steve Ersser - will introduce our plans for future events and there
will be a special display of the architect drawings for the kitchen and
toilets project that is our first fund-raising goal. The Village choir
[14]
will also give a short performance and the event will be followed by
wine and nibbles. If you need parking then spaces will be available at
the village hall.
Each household in the village should have received a leaflet about the
Friends. It includes a membership application form that I hope you
will want to complete. The annual membership rates are: £10 for an
individual and £20 for a family. If you missed out on the leaflet,
please contact the Friends by emailing [email protected] or
phoning 01964 550255.

RATS! – ADVICE FROM THE ERYC
Following the discussion at the Open meeting it was agreed to ask
East Riding’s Pest Controller his advice on how to control rats.
He notes that rats are mainly an issue in winter when food is short
and suggests the following:
Bird Feeders - If possible do not leave food out at night and ensure
that all feeders have trays underneath to catch any bits that fall so that
they do not end up on the ground.
Compost Bins- If you have the new plastic type of compost bins and
are intending to put them on top of soil, it is best to first put a fine
mesh on top of the soil and then the compost bin.
Decking – Decking is a typical area that rats like! If you have decking
make sure that towards the edges there are some loose boards that can
be taken up so that poison can be put underneath for better treatment.
Sheds – Make sure that sheds are 8 inches above the ground.
NEVER, never put poison in an open tray in the garden. Always
ensure it is in pipes or in the correct bait stations. Otherwise other
creatures including birds will take the poison and die. This includes
Starlings – who are a protected species.
Note: for a young rat to get into property it only needs a 1inch hole,
adults only need a 1.5inches, and Mice 15mm.
[15]
Annual open Meeting – Thanks to all who attended
A big THANK -YOU to all who attended the Parish Open Meeting
on the 29th
March and raised their points about the village. It was
great to see so many of you there. All the points have been noted and
as you will see elsewhere in the magazine many have already been
actioned. It’s a great forum to talk about the village in general and
hopefully see even more of you at the meeting in future years.
Margaret Hebb – Clerk.

RATHLIN ENERGY (UK) LIMITED – CRAWBERRY HILL – OIL
AND GAS EXPLORATION UPDATE
We have been informed by Rathlin Energy (UK) Limited that the
restoration work at the Crawberry Hill site has now been completed.
The landowner approved the work during a site visit on 12 April
2016.
The next step is for East Riding of Yorkshire Council's planning
department to visit the site before the environmental permits are
formally relinquished to the Environment Agency. This process is
estimated to take six to eight weeks. We understand that once the
environmental permits have been relinquished Rathlin Energy (UK)
Limited will write to all local residents to let them know. This
effectively brings the work on this site to a close. The field will
however, be subject to a comprehensive five-year aftercare
programme.
As most of you are aware Rathlin Energy (UK) Limited is also
exploring a prospect in West Newton. This will now be the focus of
its efforts in this area. Rathlin Energy (UK) Limited wishes us to
make clear that whilst the Crawberry Hill well has not been the
commercial success that they had hoped, they are very encouraged by
what the initial explorations have revealed and that whilst at the
moment nothing is planned the team may return to undertake more
work in this area in the future.
If residents have any questions please do not hesitate to contact
David or myself and we will endeavour to answer them, if we cannot
we will refer them to the Rathlin.
Should you wish further information it can be found on the company
website at: www.rathlin-energy.co.uk. Fuller notes from all the
meetings can be found in the ‘Yorkshire’ section.
