A town with a rich heritage,Bishnupur is also referred to as Mallabhum,after the Malla dynasty, who once ruled thisregion for almost a thousand years. Thefamous Terracotta temples were also builtby the same rulers, sometime between thethe 17th and the 18th century. Each andevery temple in this region bespeak ofexcellent craftsmanship and intricatecarvings. The terracotta tiles show manyscenes from the Mahabharata. Apart fromtemples, the place is also famous forterracotta pottery and other artifacts. Thefamous Baluchari sarees depicting scenesfrom the Mahabharata on the border andpallu, are also created here. As far ascelebrations are concerned, the snakefestival, Durga puja and Kali puja are someof the main festivals of this town.
The majesticRaas Mancha, the earliest terracottastructure here, is the focal point aroundwhich many hotels, shops and offices havecome up. It served as an exhibition gallery

during festivals. Recognisable by theircurved hut-like roofs, most temples haveintense relief work on terracotta panels ontheir walls, a delightful documentation ofBengal’s 17th-century society. Womenpampering themselves in front of themirror, a couple cosying up under anumbrella and the ubiquitous dancingwomen indicate a culture that believed inthe good life. Bricks were used in buildingthese temples because no stone wasavailable in the vicinity. Most of the templesare found in three clusters.
The huge lakes in Bishnupur serve ascharming picnic spots.Lal Bandh is one of the most serene spots intown. TheJogesh Chandra Pura Kirti Bhavan Museumexhibits manuscripts, metal jewellery, amusic gallery, terracotta art, Baluchari sarisand pattachitra.
The dingy alleys of Bishnupur town holdwhat may be the largest variety ofcraft traditions in Bengal. In the weavers’colonies around Tantipara and Bagan,Baluchari saris, known for the mythologicaltales woven into their borders and ends,Krishna is seen counselling Arjuna or tryingto calm down a miffed Radha.Bankura horses — of the pointy ears, neckslong enough to shame giraffes andintricately designed saddle — and muchdecorated elephants and tigers can be hadat Panchmura, a potter’s village. Bell-metal
objects, white conch shells withmythological scenes carved on them,terracotta tiles — there’s much to admireand pick up.
