From the principal

The month of October was eventful. While the classes went on in full swing, we did have a short-term break at the beginning of the month. Highlights of the month included, 3-way conferences of PYP, MYP, DP and the WACE through which the teachers and students and parents were largely benefited. Enthusiastic students of year 9 projected the idea of celebrating the UN day with a view to propagate greater intercultural understanding and respect and it was largely successful. MYP science fair was held and parent’s participation made the event more encouraging.

Students of IBDP & WACE had 3-day long CAS trip to Sylhet which was highly successful and worthy. It provided students the opportunity to learn about the cultural diversity of the local community, the plantation and processing of tea as a cash crop of Bangladesh, opportunities of underprivileged children in a nearby local school etc. The students also provided community service by conducting a cleaning expedition in Satchari National Park thereby picking up litter, plastics and other garbage. The CAS trip was planned and organised very effectively by the CAS coordinating team.

The school conducted yet another workshop for the teachers with an authorised IB trainer from abroad. This PD session encouraged our primary teachers in solidifying their deeper understanding on strategies relating to inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning. The two days long workshop was participated by at least 25 teachers.

The school celebrated Halloween as usual like other years. Students enjoyed the day by putting on different costumes, spooky makeups and decorating a Haunted House. It was a regular school day with normal activities.

With the first semester closing up the school is looking forward for

successful completion of semester Finals of all classes.

STEMON at AusIS Our students love coding and innovation! They love to design their own version of game with catchy tunes. To make a connection between the coding and its real life implementation PYP has invited STEMON-A Japanese Programming and Engineering School to show a demo with Year -4, integrating with their unit - How we organize ourselves. They have demonstrated how block based robotics works where our students have programmed and assembled individual robots. It was a kick start for our students to build their confidence and find potentiality with cooperation and full-fledged support of our parents. This is how we will ensure our Western Australian curriculum implementation of Design and technology along with Digital Technology.

Professional Development As a part of continuous professional development of the faculty, the PYP teachers have attended a 2 days long IB workshop on “Investigating Inquiry”. The trainer of the workshop was Ms Chandrei Chowdhury who is an authorized IB workshop leader, consultant and school verification visit team member. The aim of this PD was to excel in the practice of how using an inquiry-based pedagogy has the capacity to lead students to a deeper understanding of concepts through the construction of new knowledge. The teachers have achieved a deeper insight into specific strategies and questions relating to an inquiry- based approach to teaching and learning. We also have discovered how the reflective process is an essential component in becoming a life-long learner.

Halloween On 31st October AusIS celebrated Halloween. It was a regular school day with regular class activities for the PYP. Costumes, candies and spooky decorations brought the scary yet funny atmosphere in the school premise.

MYP

UN Day UN Day was celebrated for the first time at AusIS this year. We are very proud to share that this event was initiated, planned and organized by our year 9 students, Fatima Tuz Zuhura and Samia Sadat Sami in collaboration with PYP, other MYP students and teachers. The IB mission statement states that, “The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect (MYP: From Principles into Practice).” This event gave an opportunity to our students to experience the beauty of cultural diversity which shows us that even with differences, we share common humanity.

Halloween This year the Haunted House for Halloween was planned and decorated by our Year 7 students, Amelia Choudhury, Rumaisa Naailah Obaidi and Kazi Zunayna Marium in collaboration with a few other year 7, 9 students and teachers. The proceedings from the ticket to the Haunted House will go for charity.

Science Fair Thank you parents for visiting MYP Science Fair and encouraging our students for their effort. The exhibits provided improvisations of science kits and devices/ models offering solutions to many present and potential socio-economic problems.

IBDP & WACE

IBDP CAS & WACE COMMUNITY SERVICE AusIS has successfully completed a 3 day trip from 23-25 October to Habiganj, Sylhet for community service with the Year 11 and 12 students of WACE & IBDP. Twenty three students participated in the trip and were joined by WACE Coordinator Mr Ershad Serajee, CAS Coordinator Mr. Syed A K M Radib, Teacher and CAS Adviser Ms Noufa Sadia and Mr. Zahidur Rahman, Teacher and Extended Essay Coordinator Ms Indrani Das and Lab Technician Mr. Asaduzzaman.

The main aim of the trip was developing positive global citizenship for the students along with some activities where students would be challenged. The trip provided an opportunity to learn from other cultures and give students a well-rounded foundation upon which to build their knowledge for future. Students explored the Palace Resort, the tea gardens and had an opportunity to tour the tea factory where they saw the manufacturing of raw tea leaves into processed ones. The manager in the tea factory explained the tea processing and how machines work as we took a tour inside the factory. Students visited a local school for community service, spent some time with the children and donated each child an umbrella due to the adverse weather condition in Sylhet, and muffins and biscuits just as a token of adoration. They also enjoyed recreational activities and cleaned the Satchari National Park picking up litter, plastics and other garbage that could be harmful for the animals living there and of course hinders the natural beauty of the park. These activities covered most of the activities in the trip.

IBDP STUDENTS VISIT THE LIT FEST On Thursday, November 7, IBDP- 11 and 12 students went on a field trip to the annual Lit Fest taking place at Bangla Academy. The purpose of the trip was to reflect on the prevalence of literature in our lives and to see how language can be used to convey global ideas and thoughts. The students got to enjoy an introspective panel session titled “Plenary Fiction; Resistance or Refuge” conducted by four accomplished female authors. The inciting panel was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. Following this the students explored the festival and saw all that the fest had to offer.

The trip was an amazing experience that offered students an invaluable perspective on the importance of literature and the beauty of language while allowing them to reflect what they learn in their respective subjects.

UNIVERSITY ORIENTATION PROGRAMS During the months September and October, AUSIS held several University Orientation programs, organized by the career counsellor, Ms. Nazia Hasanat. In these sessions students got a chance to openly ask questions and discuss about the university. The representatives from the University of Macquire in Australia, Monash University and Carleton University from Canada presented their universities to the students; briefly covering up the available courses, facilities, opportunities, scholarships, tuition fees, etc. The WACE & DP students attended these sessions and had an opportunity to inquire about the universities and their admission requirements which will allow them to prepare for their subjects of interest.
