PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Term 3, Week 7…………………Newsletter no.14 LAURA PRIMARY SCHOOL BIRTH TO PRIMARY 6th September, 2018 East Terrace, LAURA S.A. 5480 [email protected] ph: 86632543 We’re on the Web We’re on Facebook We’re on Flexibuzz On any day, if you visit Laura Primary School at recess or lunchƟme you will see almost all our children playing acƟvely in the yard. They will be kicking balls, climbing on the play equipment, hiƫng balls, digging in the sandpit or building imaginary worlds under the trees. They will be talking to each other; discussing what to do next, solving problems, negoƟaƟng, imagining, laughing and even someƟmes arguing. They are learning how to get along with others and build relaƟonships. They are learning what to do if relaƟonships go wrong. We are very fortunate to have this culture and it is something that we value highly. This week I watched the 60 Minutes report about the inuence of gaming on children’s behaviour, wellbeing and brain development. I encourage parents to watch this episode which aired on Sunday 2 nd September as it has become apparent that a number of our students are involved in playing video games, some as young as RecepƟon. The game Fortnite is being played by students and because it also has a chat forum, we are becoming aware that some children are using it to bully others. Advice from experts suggests one way to limit and control screen Ɵme in young people is to remove devices and electronic equipment from children’s rooms. We are starƟng to see some students’ work decline as they are coming to school Ɵred, and I suspect that they are not staying awake late because they are reading books under the covers with a torch! My point? While we have a culture of acƟvity and play, we should not take it for granted. There is room for ICT in children’s lives, and indeed, it will be essenƟal for their future, but as with most things, moderaƟon is the key. When anything becomes an obsession, or it interferes with everyday tasks and life, then we have the start of a problem. Working Bee Our Governing Council working bee is on Sunday 23 rd September at 9:30. There will be jobs to do at the Preschool as well as the school and everyone is welcome. I have included a list of jobs as a starƟng point. We won’t get it all done and will probably schedule another day when we are ready to move the Preschool back. We would like donaƟons of large boulders which can be used as borders for sandpits and paths. If you have some on your property, please let us know. A sausage sizzle will be provided for all workers on the day. Please refer to next page re tasks and equipment needed. 3Way Interviews Three way interviews will be held in week 11 and bookings can be made online at www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the event code xxukt. A leƩer with all the InformaƟon you need regarding how to book for interviews went home yesterday with your eldest or only child. Interviews form half of our reporƟng process each year, with wriƩen reports in term 2 and 4. Please make Ɵme to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers. If you want an interview and the Ɵmes we have oered do not suit you, you are welcome to contact the individual teacher to negoƟate an alternate Ɵme. Science Display Students will be displaying their term’s work in Science and Technology in the MulƟ‐purpose room during the interview week. While you wait for interviews you can come and view their work. Three classes have been studying Biological science this term and of course, the upper primary class will have their STEM work to display. Parent Opinion Surveys One of our mandated reporƟng requirements is to conduct a parent opinion survey each year. The survey is available online at hƩps:// www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/YNEnNmTe and if completed in this format, the results are collated for us, saving valuable administraƟve Ɵme. If, however, you do not have internet access, paper copies have been sent home today. Thankyou to all who helped with the Father’s Day Stall on Friday. We hope all Fathers enjoyed their giŌs and Ɵme with their children. Student Free Day Friday 21 st September is a Student Free Day. Teachers will be using this day to assess and moderate wriƟng samples for the Brightpath project. Preschool/Rural Care Closure day Rural Care will be closed on Friday 28 th September so that the relocaƟon to Gladstone Preschool can be nalised. School will sƟll operate on this last REMINDER: GOVERNING COUNCIL MEETING MONDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 7pm In the MulƟ Purpose
