On any day, if you visit Laura Primary School at recess or lunch me you will see almost all our children playing ac vely in the yard. They will be kicking balls, climbing on the play equipment, hi ng balls, digging in the sandpit or building imaginary worlds under the trees. They will be talking to each other; discussing what to do next, solving problems, nego a ng, imagining, laughing and even some mes arguing. They are learning how to get along with others and build rela onships. They are learning what to do if rela onships go wrong.
We are very fortunate to have this culture and it is something that we value highly.
This week I watched the 60 Minutes report about the influence of gaming on children’s behaviour, wellbeing and brain development. I encourage parents to watch this episode which aired on Sunday 2nd September as it has become apparent that a number of our students are involved in playing video games, some as young as Recep on. The game Fortnite is being played by students and because it also has a chat forum, we are becoming aware that some children are using it to bully others.
Advice from experts suggests one way to limit and control screen me in young people is to remove devices and electronic equipment from children’s rooms. We are star ng to see some students’ work decline as they are coming to school red, and I suspect that they are not staying awake late because they are reading books under the covers with a torch!
My point? While we have a culture of ac vity and play, we should not take it for granted. There is room for ICT in children’s lives, and indeed, it will be essen al for their future, but as with most things, modera on is the key. When anything becomes an obsession, or it interferes with everyday tasks and life, then we have the start of a problem. Working Bee Our Governing Council working bee is on
Sunday 23rd September at 9:30. There will be jobs to do at the Preschool as well as the school and everyone is welcome. I have included a list of jobs as a star ng point. We won’t get it all done and will probably schedule another day when we are ready to move the Preschool back. We would like dona ons of large boulders which can be used as borders for sandpits and paths. If you have some on your property, please let us know. A sausage sizzle will be provided for all workers on the day. Please refer to next page re tasks and equipment needed. 3‐Way Interviews Three way interviews will be held in week 11 and bookings can be made online at www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the event code xxukt. A le er with all the Informa on you need regarding how to book for interviews went home yesterday with your eldest or only child. Interviews form half of our repor ng process each year, with wri en reports in term 2 and 4. Please make me to discuss your child’s progress with their teachers. If you want an interview and the mes we have offered do not suit you, you are welcome to contact the individual teacher to nego ate an alternate me.
Science Display Students will be displaying their term’s work in Science and Technology in the Mul ‐purpose room during the interview week. While you wait for interviews you can come and view their work. Three classes have been studying Biological science this term and of course, the upper primary class will have their STEM work to display. Parent Opinion Surveys One of our mandated repor ng requirements is to conduct a parent opinion survey each year. The survey is available online at h ps://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/YNEnNmTe and if completed in this format, the results are collated for us, saving valuable administra ve me. If, however, you do not have internet
access, paper copies have been sent home today.

This term, Laura Primary School was fortunate to receive grant money through the Spor ng School Program. With the money received we partnered up with Tennis Australia and purchased much needed equipment and we secured the services of local Port Pirie Coach, Grant Hanlon. Grant has been working with each class on a Thursday and will con nue for a total of 4 weeks. It is pleasing to see the children's skills and confidence in tennis increasing. Sandra Zander
