From the Heart of the Pastor! Another Charge Conference is schedule for October 25, 2015! This is my second Charge Conference in Minneapolis/Ada United Methodist Community. The Lord has been good to me. This is my Ebenezer for the lord has taken me this far! Some of you have been here for much more time. The charge conference is the basic unit in the United Methodist connectional system linking the local church to the global United Methodist family. Come, let us see the church at it best!
The local church is where the rubber hits the road! The book of discipline states that, “the church of Jesus Christ exists in and for the world. Under the discipline of the Holy Spirit, the church exists for the maintenance of worship, they edification of believers and the redemption of the world!” The local church is a strategic base from which believers move out to the structures of the world to help people accept and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to live their daily lives in light of their relationship with God. The local church is called upon to minister to all people in the community where the local church is located; to provide appropriate training and nurture to all, to cooperate in ministry with other local churches and to participate in the global evangelization for the transformation of the world. Evangelization is not an option but a mandate from Jesus Christ.
The charge conference has two basic purposes. The first is to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the local church. If we are serious about doing the work Jesus called us to be, we must review and evaluate our work prayerfully and ask the holy spirit to redirect our energies in a way that help us make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Charge conference is a time of conferencing and reflecting on what we may need to do differently to make the world better for everybody. You cannot leave the responsibility of reviewing and evaluating the church's work to a few and expect the best results. Each and every one of us has certain gifts that are needed to make our experience real and meaningful to the world. If a stranger meets you on one of the streets of Minneapolis and Ada and asks you what you have been doing as a believer; what would you tell the stranger? Or, if a friend asks you of a place of relaxing and spiritual nourishment, would your place of worship be one of them you would recommend to a friend or stranger? Come and share your experience and make our work at Minneapolis/Ada community, and how we view the world richer and wiser. The second purpose of charge conference is to celebrate what God is doing in us and with us every day. Yes, we have a lot more to do as we continue the work of our lord Jesus Christ, but because God has taken us this far, we have every reason to celebrate. I am aware that the District Superintendent will give us an opportunity to share with each other what we have seen and experienced during the course of this year. Our faith is more than a statement! It requires testimonies of our personal experiences; sharing what we have seen and heard and experienced. Writing to Timothy, Paul says, “Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our lord, or of me his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace! This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has been now revealed through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Timothy 1:8 – 10.
Thanks you all. See you all in church. Pastor Kennedy Mukwindidza

Hearts 4 Him
Hearts 4 Him is coming to the First Methodist Church
in Minneapolis once again. Previously they came and
presented a concert that was well attended and
many said that they wanted them to come again.
This men’s ensemble is from central Kansas and has
brought their musical ministry to audiences for
several years. Their songs will “touch your hearts
and be a source of encouragement and inspiration”.
They will be performing on Sunday, October 25, 2015
during the morning worship service.
Our many thanks to Kathleen Wedel for making the
arrangements for this group to make a return appearance
to our church. A love offering will be taken.
We will observe All Saints’ Day on Sunday, November 1
with a special service honoring those who have passed in
the past year. During the worship service and
opportunity will be given to light a candle in memory of
your friend or loved one.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Lura “Opal”
Batcheller Carroll. Opal passed away at the Good
Samaritan Society in Minneapolis on August 30, 2015 at
the age of 100.
Opal accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age, and
attended church regularly where ever she lived. She was
a member of the Episcopal Church and later the
Methodist Church. She had been a member of the First
United Methodist Church in Minneapolis since 1985.
She was born December 11, 1914 in Tescott. In 1928 she
graduated from Asbury Hospital Nursing School in Salina
as a Registered Nurse. She began as a nurse at a
tuberculosis sanatorium in Norton, where she met and
married Herb Howard. She treated injured soldiers
during WWII at a hospital in Kansas City, KS and was a
surgery room supervisor in North Platte, NE. She was
widowed in 1961 and retired in 1976 in TX. A year later
she married Gordon “Red” Carroll and they moved to
Florence, KS and then to the Ottawa County State Lake to
be close to family.
A service was held to honor Opal’s life at the Bennington
Bible Church on Saturday, September 5.
Fall brings a variety of activities. Four ladies from our
UMW unit attended the District UMW meeting hosted by
Concordia First UMC on Sept. 19. The theme was
“Welcomed by God – Welcoming All”. Holly Heyroth
Opundo, formerly of Derby, KS gave a presentation about
her ministry in Tanzania at Angel House Orphanage and
Angel Secondary School. She shared about her faith, her
calling to Africa and how she has spent 13 years loving
and teaching children in Africa. “This Is My Father’s
World”, a special musical presentation by Musical Visions
ensemble, completed the day.
Our October meet of UMW has been cancelled.
On Tuesday, Oct. 27, we will meet at 6:30 p.m. in
Fellowship Hall to finish prepping the dining room for the
chicken dinner.
Our next meeting will be Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. for a soup
supper and World Thank Offering meeting.
During the month of October the Sunday School classes
will be collecting items to place in Christmas shoe boxes.
These boxes will be part of Operation Christmas Child and
will be sent to Samaritans Purse for distribution world-
wide. The children will be packing the boxes in early
November. These shoe boxes will be part of our church’s
donation.
It is the intent of this project to increase our donation
from last year’s thirty (30) boxes to fifty (50). Each family
or individual is asked to prepare a box or boxes as you
have done in the past. It is our hope that the additional
box supplies can come from new individuals or families
who have not previously participated.
We already have toys left over from the church store that
will make great shoe box gifts. What we are needing to
add are additional items like soap, wash cloths,
toothbrushes, combs, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers,
crayons, pens, and colored pencils. A tree of needed
items will be placed in the foyer. Please help us expand
our contribution to this worthwhile project. Supplies or
money to purchase the items can also be left in the
church office.
Thanks,
Colette
Psalm 100 will practice Oct. 7 in the sanctuary. Gail will
be out of town the 2 middle weeks of Oct. We would
gladly welcome any new voices that would like to join us
as we make a joyful noise unto the Lord.

A Moment In Mission: World Communion Sunday
October 4, 2015
Around the globe, countless gifted and qualified
people face financial obstacles that hinder them from
preparing for the vocation God has given them,
especially youth and young adults. For ethnic
students who will be the first generation in their
families to attend college, or for those people of color
who haven’t historically had access to resources that
make higher education possible, the road toward
education has often been unwieldy.
What would it look like if the church today imitated
Jesus’ affirmation of the full dignity and God-given
potential of all women and men—especially those
who’ve historically been assigned to the world’s
margins? On World Communion Sunday your giving
helps to provide scholarships for national and
international graduate students whom God has
gifted to learn and to serve.
Equipping Disciples Like Mary Grace to Serve in
Jesus’ Name
As a small child Mary Grace Galapon labored as a
housemaid in exchange for food and clothing. Yet,
allowed to attend church, she found hope. As a
member of The United Methodist Church, your giving
on World Communion Sunday has allowed this
deaconess, of the Mindanao Philippines Annual
Conference, to pursue an education that is now
changing her community as she works to eliminate
poverty.
Mary Grace’s work, and the impact of hundreds more
like her, are possible because you give.
Will You Equip World-Changers?
Will you give generously on World Communion
Sunday to make education and vocational impact
possible for more students, like Mary Grace? Will you
equip gifted and qualified students from around the
globe to become the world-changers God created
them to be?
Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most
powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”
And because the people of The United Methodist
Church believe that all of God’s children have been
created and gifted to build the kingdom Jesus
ushered in, we’re resourcing them to do just that.
Because of your giving on World Communion Sunday,
the most powerful tool to change the world is in more
hands.
From www.umcgiving.org/WCS
Through his sacrifice, Jesus offers us the bread of life.
Please give generously on World Communion Sunday.
Your gifts support scholarships and training for racial
ethnic persons.
RALLY DAY 2015
Tamala Lott and Shayla Boyer presented Bibles to
the third graders in attendance – Ethan Bohl, Braxton
Grimes and Brinley Boyer.
=
Joan Miles, assisted by Dale
Henderson, presented a
message to the children.
Gail reported for the UMW. Their ice cream social was well attended and they took in $330 for their missions. Tomorrow
they will be serving a luncheon to the District Clergy members.
Kristi reported for the Preschool. They met on Tuesday, September 8. They are working on goals. They are in need of at
least two scholarships. They will be hosting the Second Sunday dinner in December and will be having a fund raiser in
February. They are in the process of getting some grants written.
OLD BUSINESS:
Dale announced that Steve is in charge of getting small groups organized – probably in October.
There was more discussion on Second Sunday dinners and how we can reorganize and/or make it more focused on
fellowship.
NEW BUSINESS:
Pastor Kennedy brought it to our attention that UM churches can make it part of their programs to be a “Healthy
Congregation” and qualify for $1000 grant.
The annual chicken dinner was discussed and Paula will again be chairperson. The date set was Wednesday, October 28.
Pastor Kennedy gave his report on the state of the church. We recently lost a member through death and several in our
congregation are ill. He is hopeful that now that school has started, our attendance returns to normal and even to the
status that it was several years ago. He reported that he met with the DS the day after he returned from his mission trip to
Zimbabwe. Since FUMC is the largest Methodist church in the county, we need to be more visible. The Sundays that we are
to lead the worship service at LTC and Good Sams, more than the pastor and pianist need to attend. The monthly HymnSing
is another opportunity to be visible. He is the head of the missions in the Salina district and hopes to have a Mission Fair
and Chabadza project. As team leader he needs support from the congregation. The Lay Leadership committee will meet
on Thursday, September 10, but faces serious challenges as there was less than the expected response from the
Stewardship cards.
Dale announced that our next meeting will be on October 14.
Pastor Kennedy closed the meeting prayer.
Respectfully submitted,
Joyce Hamm, Recording Secretary
Pastor Kennedy plans to have an Advent Bible study beginning on Tuesday, November 12, or Wednesday, November 18, and
it will run 4 or 5 weeks, depending on the Bible Study selected.
Please mark your preferences:
I prefer: _____Morning Session ______Evening session
I prefer: _____Wednesday ______ Thursday
_____ “Sent”. Dynamic pastor Jorge Acevedo leads us on a 5-week Advent journey to discover how, where and why we are
sent. Joining him on the journey are four young clergy who challenge us through story, art and Bible study.
_____ “Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam” is written by James W. Moore. Christ breaks into our chaos and
confusion and brings Christmas. Bethlehem always happens in the midst of bedlam.
_____ “Awaiting the Already” is by Magrey R. deVega. It takes a tour through the four gospel narratives. Readers will
discover what parts of the Christmas story come from which gospel, recognizing an invitation from each writer to prepare
for a fresh experience of Christ in the past and in the future.
_____ “Advent Presence” is authored by Melford Holland and if offers a new look at Advent by seeing the four weeks
through the lens of morning, mid-day, late afternoon and evening, and night. Photographs, stories and perspectives enrich
our travel and invite us to other dimensions of experiencing Advent.
Please mark your preferences and put your paper in the offering plate or on the foyer table near the office door. Thanks!
