Birla Institute of Technology And Science Aptitude Test

BITSAT is an entrance exam for admission to various institutes of Birla Institute of Technology and Science for bachelor engineering programmes in their Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa campus. Unlike other engineering entrance tests BITSAT is not a paper based test but an online test which occurs on different days for different students with different question sets of similar difficulty levels.

BITS institutes are one of the most prestigious institutes for engineering education in India therefore a very large number of candidates apply for BITSAT every year. Last time more than one and a half lakh students appeared for BITSAT.

BITS also provides opportunities to board-toppers for direct admission to their institutes without any entrance examination.

Computer Based Online test means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate answers the questions on the computer through the use of keyboard or mouse. Each computer is connected to a server, which prepares the question set and delivers it to the candidate on the computer.

This is unlike the traditional paper-pencil based test, which is generally offered on a single day to all candidates. BITSAT-2010 will be offered over a period of time and the candidate can choose the Center, the Day and Time of his/her convenience to take the test, as described in the later sections.

Expansion into multiple campuses

In 1999, student capacity was expanded from 2500 to 4000. New campuses were established in Dubai (2000) and Goa, India (2004). In 2006, BITS Pilani acquired 200 acres (0.81 km2) of land from the Andhra Pradesh government through the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority for opening up a new campus.

The land is located in Jawaharnagar, Shammerpet Mandal in Rangareddy district. The BITS Pilani Hyderabad, India campus started functioning in 2008.

The institute was established, in its present form, in 1964 with a vision to realize Jawaharlal Nehru’s project of nation-building with an emphasis on "science, technology and modernization."

During this period, the institute's transformation from a regional engineering college to a national university was backed by the Ford Foundation and G.D. Birla. Massachusetts Institute of Technology provided technical assistance that was required for this transformation.

The institute administers the all-India computerized entrance test, BITSAT (BITS Admission Test), which is the first of its kind in India. Acceptance rate in BITS is very low, less than 2.08% in 2007, making it one of the most selective universities in India.

The admission is on the basis of merit (as assessed by the BITSAT examination) and not through any kind of reservation.
