Species: Latham’s Snipe, Pied Cormorant, water birds & migratory waders. GPS: 34 o 11’11.4” S 142 o 10’51.0”E 4 Meridian Road Swamps Brackish ephemeral lakes surrounded by Chenopod shrublands. Access: Proceed 15.2km from Calder and Sturt Highways intersection towards Adelaide. Turn left into Meridian Road. Swamps are on both sides 3km south. Facilities: None. Observation is restricted from the road reserve. Species: White-winged Fairy-wren, Australian Pratincole, chats, & water birds & birds of prey when water. GPS: 34 o 15’24.7”S 141 o 59’49.1”E 5 John Hobbs Memorial Reserve An Eremophila patch that flowers in early spring. Access: From Dareton supermarket proceed Birds of the Mildura Region MILDURA The Mildura region offers an exciting array of birding opportunities, in a diversity of ecosystems. Birding sites range from undulating Mallee Spinifex dunes, to floodplains of River Red Gum and Black Box. In many cases, artificial wetlands, salt interception schemes and flow-regulated sites have also become great places for birdwatching. Birding Sites 2.2km west and turn half right into Keenans Dr. 4.8km from Dareton supermarket, turn right onto a winding dirt track and then turn left along the fence. Facilities: None. Species: Black Honeyeater, Pied Honeyeater, Australian Owlet-nightjar, White-browed & Masked Woodswallow, Chestnut- crowned Babbler & White-fronted Honeyeater. GPS: 34 o 4’33.67”S 141 o 59’40.81”E 6 Thegoa Lagoon Lignum and Saltbush vegetation as well as Blackbox and Red Gum floodplains. Access: After crossing the Darling River at Wentworth, via Sandwych St, Beverley St and Cadell St. 0.6km past the lock and weir, turn right and follow track north to Lagoon. Facilities: Bird hide. Species: Australian Spotted Crake, Black- fronted & Red-kneed Dotterel, Swamp Harrier, Red-necked Avocet, Royal & Yellow-billed Spoonbill, & Black-winged Stilt. GPS: 34 o 5’47.40”S 141 o 52’54.44”E 7 Australian Inland Botanic Gardens Semi-arid woodlands with English and native plantings and sandy red loam dunes. A system of walking tracks wind through the vegetation communities. Access: Cross the Murray River into Buronga and veer slightly left at roundabout. Turn left into River Road and continue 3.6km. Facilities: Toilets. Species: Mulga & other parrots, Restless Flycatcher, Zebra Finch, Western Gerygone, Superb, Splendid & Variegated Fairy-wren, Black, Pied & many other honeyeaters. GPS: 34 o 8’33.2”S 142 o 8’56.1”E Murray-Sunset National Park A large park dominated by Mallee on sandy loam dunes with pockets of native pine and Belah woodlands, as well as flood plain and ephemeral lake areas. Access: From Murrayville or Ouyen in the south and Red Cliffs, Mildura or Renmark in the north. Facilities: Pink Lakes on Lake Crosbie has toilets, tables and fireplaces. Beyond Pink Lakes a 4WD is required. There are camping grounds at Mopoke Hut, Mount Crozier and Rocket Lake. There is basic accommodation at the old shearer’s quarters in the park’s north-west – phone Werrimull Office 13 19 63. Species: Malleefowl, Red-lored Whistler, Major Mitchells Cockatoo, Black-eared Miner, Regent & Mulga Parrot, Blue Bonnet, Emu, Southern Scrub-robin, Crested Bellbird, Shy Heathwren & Chestnut Quail-thrush. Vegetation includes extensive scrub and open native pine woodland. Access: Take the Calder Highway to Hattah township, 35 km north of Ouyen. Turn off to information centre at Hattah Lake. Facilities: Camp sites have pit toilets, tables and fireplaces. Species: Mallee Emu-wren, Striated Grasswren, Chestnut Quail-thrush, Malleefowl, Major Mitchells Cockatoo, Apostlebird, White-winged Chough, Great Crested Grebe, Spotted Nightjar, Regent & other parrots, Red-backed Kingfisher, Crested Bellbird, babblers & water birds. GPS: 34 o 45’21.29”S 142 o 20’35.54”E 14 Lake Ranfurly Saline ground water is pumped into the lake before it enters the Murray River, as part of a Salt Interception Scheme. Access: Cross the railway line at the western end of Fifteenth St. Alternately, access from the southern end of Flora Ave, on the left on Ranfurly Way. Facilities: Bird hide. Species: Banded & Black-winged Stilts, Red-necked Avocet, Red-capped Plover, White-fronted Chat, Black Kite, Australasian Shelduck, water birds & waders. GPS: 34 o 11’23.6”S 142 o 6’55.9”E 15 Ned’s Corner A former grazing property purchased by Trust for Nature in 2002 for rehabilitation. The large property shares borders with the Murray River and National Park. Access: Proceeding along the Sturt Highway from Mildura, turn right approximately 22 km from Lake Culleraine, into Ned’s Corner Road and continue for approximately 14 km. Facilities: Contact the station for permission to visit and to book group accommodation www.nedscorner.com.au Species: Regent Parrot, Budgerigar, Nankeen Kestrel, Banded Lapwing, Little Button Quail, Orange & White-fronted Chat, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Inland Dotterel, Weebill & water birds.
