donald cameron centre rising up to the challenge! Bird Construction was commissioned to revitalize and expand the wood-framed two-storey office building formerly known as Smith Hall, one of three original chalets constructed on the side of Tunnel Mountain in 1948. The first aboriginal personal care home built in Winnipeg, the Southeast Personal Care facility is a single-storey, 80-bed facility that provides much needed support to the community. Targeting LEED Silver certification, the 52,000 square foot facility accommodates residents in its eight wings, which are all central to the circular core of communal and public areas. The core incorporates program facilities and a multifunctional central gathering space.

When record rainfall and power outages caused flooding in the basement, the Bird team increased

its work force to help with the removal of damaged electrical and mechanical equipment. Responsive to the impact on the schedule, the team worked impeccably to re-order and re-install the new systems.

Bird acknowledges the extra effort required when unexpected incidents arise. Working together, the Bird team provided its client with a beautiful facility that combines the best in long-term care practices in an environment that is welcoming, supportive and culturally relevant.

A new three-storey residence addition to the existing residence and nursing home, The Sisters of Charity project is a steel frame structure with masonry cladding and metal composite panels.

Prior to construction, Bird demolished the former residence with a special request made by the owners – to preserve the residential treasures including ceiling medallions, doors and the fireplace mantel. Through careful coordination, the team successfully transferred and incorporated the original pieces into the new residence.

The new residence is connected to the existing nursing home via a 53-foot clear span pedway. Within the nursing home, the Bird team upgraded the sprinkler system, and renovated the elevator and kitchen.

Aside from the struggle of performing construction work during East Coast winters, Bird fast tracked the project by working with phased drawings. However, by working closely with the owners and architects, the construction is on track for a successful mid-September completion.

The Maritimes’ first auto mall, O’Regan’s, houses four full-sized automobile dealers within one central facility. Bird transformed a former warehouse location, comprising of 10-acres of land into a one-stop shopping auto mall experience, equipped with dealerships and an undercoating and paint protection facility.

The new build includes aluminum curtain walls, metal siding and an EPDM rubber roof. Rather than completely demolishing and disposing the existing facility, Bird incorporated 95% of the insulated pre-cast panels, electric lighting, and asphalt paving into their new design. Because the height of the existing panels exceeded that of the intended roof, the team reset the pre-cast footings below grade to accommodate the additional height.

Through Bird’s communication and coordination with the client, Bird was able to successfully complete the project and provide cost saving measures to the client by preserving existing building and auxiliary building materials and components.

The Firebag Village site provides accommodation and amenities to over 1,750 staff employed at nearby Firebag oil sands operation. The Village includes an 80,700 square foot core building, residential facilities, firewater storage and distribution systems, emergency power systems, civil and electrical site services, and potable and sewage treatment plants. Bird was responsible for designing, constructing, and interfacing with the peripheral buildings.

The Firebag Village Core Building, one of the first buildings in the oil sands to target LEED Silver certification, is constructed from 300 tons of structural steel, over 2,600 cubic yards of concrete, insulated composite metal cladding, and exterior insulation and finishing system. Bird’s efforts to achieve LEED certification included recycling over 75% of the project’s construction waste. This included re-using wood on the site to produce chips for the walkways and coordinating the shipment of waste to a recycling plant in nearby Fort McMurray.

Bird Construction set a Canadian construction record for the use of concrete tilt-up panels on the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Bird assembled the stage fly tower using 25 tilt-up concrete panels – each 82 feet high and weighing an average of 45 tons – the tallest panels of this type ever erected in Canada. The massive panels were hoisted into place using a combination of 500-ton fixed and mobile cranes and stabilized with a temporary steel support system.

The Centre supports a range of cultural activities with a strong focus on the visual and performing arts. Key design features include a 540 seat main performance theatre; a community art gallery highlighting the work of local artists; and an open, transparent, double-height entrance lobby framed with large and dramatic wood glulam canopies indicative of West Coast architecture.

This innovative Chilliwack jewel was completed in less than two years, on budget and ahead of schedule. The use of tilt-up panels helped to expedite the construction schedule and provided substantial cost savings.

Located at the gateway to the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph campus, the Pathobiology / Animal Health Laboratory Building is the new face of the OVC. Housing instruction laboratories and lecture halls, this five-storey, four-floor concrete structure and pre-engineered mechanical penthouse features a cladding treatment of anodized aluminum panels, curtain wall and brick veneer.

During construction the Bird project team was quick to respond to an excessive groundwater situation. The team installed a de-watering system and mitigated impact by rearranging the work schedule and extending work hours. Bird encountered another challenge when the building’s structure was near completion and a change in the scope of work occurred – the elevator shaft originally terminating at the fourth floor was extended to the mechanical penthouse. Bird worked with the design team and suggested modifications to schedule and structure including high early strength concrete in some time sensitive applications that mitigated the impact and allowed the project to meet its original schedule.

Working together, the Bird team provided its client with a beautiful facility that combines the best in long-term care practices in an environment that is welcoming, supportive and culturally relevant.

donald cameron centrerising up to the challenge!Bird Construction was commissioned to revitalize and expand the wood-framed two-storey office building formerly known as Smith Hall, one of three original chalets constructed on the side of Tunnel Mountain in 1948.

Recognizing the potential for considerable cost savings for the client, Bird raised the existing building by three feet to allow the Centre’s addition to be built on grade. This increase also brought it closer to the neighbouring Kinnear Centre elevation, thereby eliminating the need for costly grade separation considerations. The significant undertaking required internal bracing and frame work while hydraulic jacks were used to lift the structure.

As numerous design changes were incorporated into the scope of work, the Bird team expedited construction by extending work hours and increasing man power to ensure the initial completion date was reached.

Targeting LEED® Silver certification, Bird not only saved the building from demolition but reused the original stone foundation for landscaping while regional building materials and sustainable certified wood were used for the 5,800 square foot building addition.
