H.J. O’Connell (HJO), a subsidiary of Bird, was the lead in the joint venture, IKC-ONE Earthwork Constructors consortium, which included the participation of the Labrador Innu. The contract included overburden and rock excavation of the intake, powerhouse, spillway, separation wall, switchyard and converter stations and dams at the site of the 824 megawatt hydroelectric generating station in central Labrador.The team worked around-the-clock to complete the project before the winter months with a crew of 400 and 200 pieces of heavy equipment. Almost 300,000 linear metres of rock was drilled with 75 to 165 millimetre holes for blasting. The rock removal commenced at 20 metres above the river level and concluded at 32 metres below water level. In addition 150,000 cubic metres of earthfill cofferdams and 37,000 cubic metres of roller compacted concrete cofferdams were built. At the completion of the project, over 2.7 million cubic metres of earth was moved, over 1.8 million cubic metres of rock blasting and removal was completed and 15,000 cubic metres of underwater rock was removed. With the success of this project, HJO looks forward to additional contract awards for this ongoing challenging project.

In 2013, Bird participated in the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. Across the company, Bird put the spotlight on risk tolerance — our individual and collective willingness and capacity to bear risk in pursuit of our goals. In Winnipeg, Bird employees joined the Steps for Life Walk to raise pledges and awareness for families of workplace tragedy. The team completed a five kilometre walk and raised over $7,000.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation has also rewarded the Bird Saint John District’s wellness committee for their efforts in shaping health promotion at the workplace.

Our industrial sector has been awarded two awards for health, safety and environmental best practices including Canadian Natural Resources Limited’s Appreciation of Safety Excellence Award, and Bantrel and ConocoPhillips’ Environmental Excellence Award.

Bird has received the Ontario General Contractors Association’s Distinguished Achievements in Health and Safety for achieving a zero injury frequency for 778,021 man hours completed.

Jim Brennan is appointed to the position of president of Bird’s wholly owned subsidiary H.J. O’Connell, Limited, in addition to retaining his senior vice president title at Bird. Jim, a successful founder of Rideau Construction, joined Bird in 2008 with the completion of Bird’s acquisition of Rideau. Since that time he has primarily been responsible for the Atlantic operations of Bird, which have seen our Halifax and Saint John operations flourish. His

entrepreneurial spirit will be beneficial as he works with the O’Connell management team to effectively continue the growth of their operations in the coming years.

In an evening celebration on June 4 with over 100 friends, family and colleagues, Mark McLaren joined 175 other members in Bird’s 25 Year Club, recognizing those employed with Bird for 25 years. Currently, Mark is the director of business development for the Toronto office. His expertise has not only impacted the success of the Toronto district, but has also resulted in contract

PEOPLE ON THE MOVE CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

Located in downtown Toronto, this four-storey building was carefully shaped and sculpted to fit comfortably into its tight urban site. A facade of glazing, fibre-cement panels and vertical sunshade fins reduce solar gains. For south and west facades, late-day solar gains are countered by a fully automated exterior shading blind system — one of the first large-scale applications in Canada.Targeting LEED® Platinum, the building features numerous green building practices including a green roof and geothermal heating and cooling system. In order to meet the project’s schedule, Bird installed the geothermal system after the structure was completed. Work involved drilling 84 holes, 150 metres deep under the basement parking garage. This is the first project application of this new drilling technology in Ontario. The system ties into a space heating/cooling network, consisting of hydronic capillary mats installed in the ceiling grid. The mats are composed of five millimetre polypropylene tubes carrying water for heating and cooling. On a tight downtown Toronto site with only one access point for the site and no place for material laydown, all deliveries were handled on a just-in-time basis. The close proximity of residential homes abutting the site required the team to work with the Upper Jarvis Neighbourhood Association. Through town hall meetings and monthly newsletters, Bird ensured the community was kept informed of the project’s progress.

ANZAC WATER RESERVOIR & PUMP STATION

ELEMENTARY TEACHERS’ FEDERATION OF ONTARIO HEADQUARTERS

Bird’s favourable reputation and visionary approach lent itself to the securement of this project. The project was procured through an in-house design-build approach, where Bird’s internal design team worked closely with the client to develop a functional space program, and prepare conceptual and design development drawings using Autodesk® Revit® software. During the extensive design process, 3D models were created to allow the client to visualize the completed project. During construction, the construction team and consultants were able to maintain the integrity of the design by using the approved 3D renderings as a reference. Unique to this project, Bird used fire modelling techniques to reduce costs for traditional fire protection systems, which decreased the use of harmful fireproofing products. This was achieved through the use of computer fire model simulations and timed exit studies for occupancy loads. By refining the design, the studies were conclusive that the building exceeded all requirements for fire protection and the money saved was reallocated to sustainable design strategies including the highly insulated building envelope featuring insulated tilt-up concrete sandwich panels and heat recovery ventilation. The three-storey office and conference centre can accommodate meetings of up to 300 people. Through value engineering, Bird was able to expand the building by 1,800 square metres while still adhering to the client’s budget. The exterior features glazing with the union’s prominent colours of blue and gold. The building and convention centre are bridged by an atrium-style, open-window winter garden.

The new earth science building is one of the largest cross laminated timber wood structures in North America. More than 50% of the building’s structure is constructed with wood material including the addition of a wood structured pedway to an existing neighbouring building. Our team educated themselves on the proper installation procedures and sealers for wood products, and the appropriate refinishing practices. As a result, Bird has acquired the knowledge to become an industry leader in heavy timber construction. The building includes a five-storey atrium and a show-stopping wood staircase. The facility provides learning spaces for more than 7,000 students each year including three lecture theatres ranging in sizes from 350 seats to 70 seats; leading-edge wet laboratories; clean room laboratories; and high headroom laboratories with two and five tonne overhead cranes for large-scale experiments. The wet labs were constructed using a flexible lab system design incorporating a ceiling track system for all mechanical, electrical and gas services, allowing the lab benches and work stations to be reconfigured for future expansion. Bird has the ability and the experience working on projects of this size and was involved from the beginning of this highly integrated design process. The project is targeting LEED® Gold certification with its extensive solar shading and systems that reclaim waste heat from the labs. Bird worked with the consultants to redesign the project to incorporate a near-zero thermal energy waste heating and cooling system to add to the building’s energy cost savings.The project has been awarded the Architectural Institute of British Columbia’s Architectural Award.

Sobeys Sage Creek is the first in a series of new Sobeys stores to be launched across the country. As a general contractor capable of building large retail projects, our proven success comes from understanding the compressed schedules and changing requirements that accompany projects in the retail sector. Bird welcomed the challenge to deliver Sobeys’ new store concept.The project was awarded in two parts: the base building package, including all foundations, building structure and shell, followed by the interior fit-up package. The interior fit-up package was released later than anticipated due to the fact that it was the first model of its kind in Canada. As a result, construction activities were accelerated to meet the store’s opening date. Our team worked extended hours and weekends to complete the project. Bird led the charge with as many as 140 workers on-site focusing on building construction while Sobeys’ crew worked on the interior fixturing including shelving, equipment installation and product placement. Bird self-performed the concrete foundations, concrete slabs, carpentry and miscellaneous specialities installation. The complex underground plumbing required excavations as deep as three metres to accommodate the slopes required to drain the building.

Bird has been recognized nationally on several notable financial lists including PROFIT Magazine’s 500 List of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies. Bird made the 500 List, as well as the Billion-Dollar Club, which features Canada’s fastest-growing companies with revenues in excess of $1 billion. A mere five organizations from the PROFIT 500 list of companies made the club.

BIRD’S MERITS OF SUCCESSNason Contracting Group Ltd., a subsidiary of Bird, constructed and commissioned the water reservoir and pump station in Anzac to provide potable water to the Anzac and Conklin area for both industrial and residential users. Due to the increase of construction activities in the area, there was a growing demand for potable water consumption in construction camps. Previously, water tankers were used to supply construction camps with potable water from as far away as Fort McMurray. Nason was awarded the contract by leveraging their capabilities to self-perform all major components of the project with their in-house trade contractors. The team experienced abnormally harsh weather conditions during October that persisted throughout the winter, impacting the project’s manpower scheduling. Therefore, Nason created a master schedule for all of their projects in the area to allow their craft workers to be positioned where needed. This strategy allowed all of their ongoing projects to stay on schedule.Operation of the Anzac facility is entirely automated and is monitored from the water treatment plant central operations facility in Fort McMurray. The programmable logic controller (PLC) based control system at the facility is linked to the central operations room using a radio telemetry system between the two locations. Nason completed the electrical and instrumentation designs and produced all layouts, PLC wiring diagrams and loop diagrams for the project.

With nearly 4,400 members to support, Boilermakers Local 146 engaged Bird to construct their new training facility based on our success delivering similar projects for the client over the last 10 years, including training facilities in Edmonton and Calgary.Bird provided conceptual design and pre-construction services, including consultation on available land options close to their existing facilities. While the original intent was to build behind their current training facility, Bird assisted the client in obtaining member approval to expand their Edmonton campus by purchasing an adjacent property that had preferential zoning regulations for building height. As a result, the 18-metre-tall facility was built without zoning issues.Bird completed the project two months ahead of schedule and enforced stringent industrial safety standards for this unique undertaking. The team was able to successfully simulate an industrial site within a commercial building envelope by applying Bird’s extensive understanding and knowledge of industrial construction. The world-class facility, which has already received international interest, features 30 different training programs including the boilermakers’ exclusive master riggers certification program. This facility has the capacity to offer training options for all phases of its members’ careers under one roof.

The final installment of Airdrie’s recreation facility, Genesis Place, has been completed by Bird. The exterior of the facility boasts a roof sloped towards the centre composed of concrete composite panels. The building envelope includes light-diffusing exterior glazing, unique to this type of facility. Bird first joined the project in 2008 as the contractor of choice to complete Phase II, the construction of soccer field houses and a gymnastics facility. Bird returned in 2012 to complete the construction of two NHL-sized arenas, seating for 250 people at each rink, refrigeration plant, ice resurfacer room, conference rooms and a foyer area for events. Given the limited site area, one of the main challenges was to provide connectivity to the other phases and functional access to the twin arenas. Faced with a tight project schedule, the team experienced a threat to the project schedule when poor soil conditions were uncovered. However, Bird was able to successfully remove approximately 25,000 cubic metres of unsuitable soils, an additional 8,000 cubic metres more than the original contract, in order to reach the required quality of soil needed for structural stability.

BIRD’S MERITS OF SUCCESSNason Contracting Group Ltd., a subsidiary of Bird, constructed and commissioned the water reservoir and pump station in Anzac to provide potable water to the Anzac and Conklin area for both industrial and residential users. Due to the increase of construction activities in the area, there was a growing demand for potable water consumption in construction camps. Previously, water tankers were used to supply construction camps with potable water from as far away as Fort McMurray. Nason was awarded the contract by leveraging their capabilities to self-perform all major components of the project with their in-house trade contractors. The team experienced abnormally harsh weather conditions during October that persisted throughout the winter, impacting the project’s manpower scheduling. Therefore, Nason created a master schedule for all of their projects in the area to allow their craft workers to be positioned where needed. This strategy allowed all of their ongoing projects to stay on schedule.Operation of the Anzac facility is entirely automated and is monitored from the water treatment plant central operations facility in Fort McMurray. The programmable logic controller (PLC) based control system at the facility is linked to the central operations room using a radio telemetry system between the two locations. Nason completed the electrical and instrumentation designs and produced all layouts, PLC wiring diagrams and loop diagrams for the project.

NASON’S NEW WEBSITE

Located in downtown Toronto, this four-storey building was carefully shaped and sculpted to fit comfortably into its tight urban site. A facade of glazing, fibre-cement panels and vertical sunshade fins reduce solar gains. For south and west facades, late-day solar gains are countered by a fully automated exterior shading blind system — one of the first large-scale applications in Canada.Targeting LEED® Platinum, the building features numerous green building practices including a green roof and geothermal heating and cooling system. In order to meet the project’s schedule, Bird installed the geothermal system after the structure was completed. Work involved drilling 84 holes, 150 metres deep under the basement parking garage. This is the first project application of this new drilling technology in Ontario. The system ties into a space heating/cooling network, consisting of hydronic capillary mats installed in the ceiling grid. The mats are composed of five millimetre polypropylene tubes carrying water for heating and cooling. On a tight downtown Toronto site with only one access point for the site and no place for material laydown, all deliveries were handled on a just-in-time basis. The close proximity of residential homes abutting the site required the team to work with the Upper Jarvis Neighbourhood Association. Through town hall meetings and monthly newsletters, Bird ensured the community was kept informed of the project’s progress.

Bird’s favourable reputation and visionary approach lent itself to the securement of this project. The project was procured through an in-house design-build approach, where Bird’s internal design team worked closely with the client to develop a functional space program, and prepare conceptual and design development drawings using Autodesk® Revit® software. During the extensive design process, 3D models were created to allow the client to visualize the completed project. During construction, the construction team and consultants were able to maintain the integrity of the design by using the approved 3D renderings as a reference. Unique to this project, Bird used fire modelling techniques to reduce costs for traditional fire protection systems, which decreased the use of harmful fireproofing products. This was achieved through the use of computer fire model simulations and timed exit studies for occupancy loads. By refining the design, the studies were conclusive that the building exceeded all requirements for fire protection and the money saved was reallocated to sustainable design strategies including the highly insulated building envelope featuring insulated tilt-up concrete sandwich panels and heat recovery ventilation. The three-storey office and conference centre can accommodate meetings of up to 300 people. Through value engineering, Bird was able to expand the building by 1,800 square metres while still adhering to the client’s budget. The exterior features glazing with the union’s prominent colours of blue and gold. The building and convention centre are bridged by an atrium-style, open-window winter garden.

H.J. O’Connell (HJO), a subsidiary of Bird, was the lead in the joint venture, IKC-ONE Earthwork Constructors consortium, which included the participation of the Labrador Innu. The contract included overburden and rock excavation of the intake, powerhouse, spillway, separation wall, switchyard and converter stations and dams at the site of the 824 megawatt hydroelectric generating station in central Labrador.The team worked around-the-clock to complete the project before the winter months with a crew of 400 and 200 pieces of heavy equipment. Almost 300,000 linear metres of rock was drilled with 75 to 165 millimetre holes for blasting. The rock removal commenced at 20 metres above the river level and concluded at 32 metres below water level. In addition 150,000 cubic metres of earthfill cofferdams and 37,000 cubic metres of roller compacted concrete cofferdams were built. At the completion of the project, over 2.7 million cubic metres of earth was moved, over 1.8 million cubic metres of rock blasting and removal was completed and 15,000 cubic metres of underwater rock was removed. With the success of this project, HJO looks forward to additional contract awards for this ongoing challenging project.

In 2013, Bird participated in the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. Across the company, Bird put the spotlight on risk tolerance — our individual and collective willingness and capacity to bear risk in pursuit of our goals. In Winnipeg, Bird employees joined the Steps for Life Walk to raise pledges and awareness for families of workplace tragedy. The team completed a five kilometre walk and raised over $7,000.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation has also rewarded the Bird Saint John District’s wellness committee for their efforts in shaping health promotion at the workplace.

Our industrial sector has been awarded two awards for health, safety and environmental best practices including Canadian Natural Resources Limited’s Appreciation of Safety Excellence Award, and Bantrel and ConocoPhillips’ Environmental Excellence Award.

Bird has received the Ontario General Contractors Association’s Distinguished Achievements in Health and Safety for achieving a zero injury frequency for 778,021 man hours completed.

Jim Brennan is appointed to the position of president of Bird’s wholly owned subsidiary H.J. O’Connell, Limited, in addition to retaining his senior vice president title at Bird. Jim, a successful founder of Rideau Construction, joined Bird in 2008 with the completion of Bird’s acquisition of Rideau. Since that time he has primarily been responsible for the Atlantic operations of Bird, which have seen our Halifax and Saint John operations flourish. His

entrepreneurial spirit will be beneficial as he works with the O’Connell management team to effectively continue the growth of their operations in the coming years.

In an evening celebration on June 4 with over 100 friends, family and colleagues, Mark McLaren joined 175 other members in Bird’s 25 Year Club, recognizing those employed with Bird for 25 years. Currently, Mark is the director of business development for the Toronto office. His expertise has not only impacted the success of the Toronto district, but has also resulted in contract
