Term 1 Week 8 20th March 2019

Friday the 18th of March was Australia’s National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, which presented a great opportunity to talk to students about bullying. In class, we listened to the story Chrysanthemum. Each time mean words were used we scrunched up our paper heart. Every time kind words were used students tried to smooth out our paper heart. At the end of the story, we discussed how our words and actions can impact one another. Students completed a cut and paste sorting activity based on different actions that make bucket fillers and bucket dippers.

It’s Cyber safety week at BPS! This week in our technology classes, all students from Preschool through to Year 6 have been learning about Cyber Safety. All classes have discussed what to do if unknown messages appear on your screen and the safe use of technology at school. Preschool to Year 2 are reading the book “The Fabulous Friend Machine” by Nick Bland. Popcorn the Chicken has learned some valuable lessons about the appropriate use of technology including not being distracted while crossing the street and not ignoring your friends. Kindy to Year 2 are making Cyber Safety posters to be displayed in the Technology Classroom. In Years 3-6 we have discussed digital citizenship, cyber bullying and online gaming and the students have completed a fun online quiz to assess their learning.

Parent Teacher Interviews are in week 10 in the Library. The days for each stage are in the Dates to Remember above. Some teachers are available extra afternoons and morning. Bookings are online as in previous years. This afternoon a parent how to book an interview will be put on the Skoolbag App once the teachers’ availability is ready to go live. Get in early to find a time that suits you best! Looking forward to catching up with many of you at the cross country carnival

This Friday is National Ride to School Day 2019. We are encouraging families to ride (safely with a helmet!) to school on their scooters, bikes or skateboards. If you don’t own one it would be great to join in by walking to school! Our school is so successful at riding to school we have out grown our supply of scooter racks and need some more! Student Parliament will be collecting gold coin donations for new scooter racks Friday morning.

STRINGS & BAND WORKSHOPS Just a reminder that the school Strings and Band workshops are coming up soon. Participating in these workshops is an important responsibility of belonging to an ensemble. It can make a big difference to how well the children play. A Workshop for Intermediate and Consort Strings members will be held on Sunday, 7th April from 10.30am to 4.30pm. A Combined Band Workshop for members of both the Training Band and the Concert Band will be held on Sunday, 5th May with lunch to be provided. Please hold the dates and more details will follow. INSTRUMENT PRACTICE

It’s that time of year when a child’s early musical enthusiasm can start to wane. This means it is more important than ever to have a regular practice regime set up. Beginners should be practising for 10 minutes a day at least 4 times a week. More advanced players should be playing for longer. If you are in doubt about what a practice session should consist of, please speak to your child's tutor. The tutor should be able to give you clear and specific direction about what your child needs to work on. Even if your child has natural talent with the instrument that they are learning, they will not be able to progress as quickly as their peers if they don't maintain a regular practice regime. How can parents help?

• Children can have short attention spans. 10-15 minutes is a realistic expectation for a beginner player, however it is better that your child picks up their instruments for 5 minutes than not at all.

• Rather than saying "Practice this for 15 minutes" (which will glue their eyes to the clock), say something like "Practice this little piece until you can play it 5 times through without looking up any of the notes" or "Practice long bows until you can keep the bow straight 3 times in a row each direction."

• Try to create a routine, so that they practice at the same time on set days. • If possible, leave everything always set up, e.g., the instrument assembled and out of its case, the music

on the music stand. • If your child doesn't respond well to the word "practice", try "will you play for me?” instead. Provide an

audience for your child, if only for part of the time. Ask them questions about what they are playing e.g., “which part is the hardest part?”, “what would that sound like slowed down?”, or ask them to play something they think you'd like.

• Praise the effort, not the end result. • Rewards can help. Work towards a goal e.g., via a sticker chart. • Never make practice a punishment. • Expose your child to how their instrument can sound - take them to performances, play music round the

house. Try to find contemporary as well as classical examples. • Talk to the tutor about finding pieces that your child would enjoy learning to play.

MUSICAL DATES FOR THE DIARY • Sunday, 7th April – Strings Workshop for Intermediate and Concert Strings, 10.30am until 4.30pm • Tuesday 7th May – Music Committee meeting at 7pm in the staffroom • Sunday, 5th May – Combined Band Workshop • Saturday, 11th May – Birchgrove Public School fete, various performances
