AW00098202000 Updating Firmware on BIP2-XXXXc and BIP2-XXXXc-dn Cameras

Application Notes 1

Before You Begin

Before you begin the firmware update process, there are several things you should know and keep in mind:

When you download the firmware update files from the Basler website, be sure to download the correct firmware file for updating BIP2-XXXXc and BIP2-XXXXc-dn cameras.

The firmware update package is provided as a zip archive. This archive needs to be extracted to the PC’s file system. It contains the following files:

The actual firmware update file, whose name contains "FW" and the firmware’s version number (e.g. FW-3.10.0.bin). This file can be used for updating firmware versions 3.8 and higher.

A file called FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin. This file is necessary for updating firmware versions 3.7 and before. Prior to updating the actual camera firmware, you have to perform a firmware update using the FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin file.

There are two ways to update camera firmware: using the Basler Surveillance Web Client or using the Basler IP Camera Finder software (version 1.7 or higher).

Using the web client to update a camera is very convenient if you already have the web client open and you are working with the camera that you want to update. When working with the web client, you can only update one camera at a time.

The BIP Finder software has the advantage that it displays all of the cameras in your network and lets you select one or more cameras to update. You can simultaneously update multiple cameras with the BIP Finder provided that all of the cameras selected for simultaneous update have "BIP2" as part of the model name (e.g., BIP2-1300c-dn).

Updating Firmware Using the Web Client

NOTE: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE CAMERA FROM POWER OR FROM THE NETWORK WHILE THE UPDATE IS IN PROGRESS. If you do disconnect power or the network connection during the update, the firmware update will fail, the camera will no longer operate, and the camera will not be repairable in the field.

Once you have downloaded a new firmware update file from the website, you can update the firmware in your camera by following this procedure:

1. Make sure that the camera whose firmware you want to update is connected.

2. Click the Start Firmware Update button.

A Start Firmware Upload dialog box will open as shown below.

3. Click the OK button.

A web page will open asking you to upload the firmware file.

4. Use the Browse button to select the new firmware file that you want to load onto the camera.

a. If you are updating firmware versions 3.8 or higher, select the firmware update file.

b. If you are updating firmware versions 3.7 or before, select the FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin file.

5. Click the Start Firmware Upload button.

A web page will open asking you to verify that the firmware is correct for the camera.

6. Make sure that the firmware is correct and then click the Confirm Update button.

A web page indicating the progress will appear. Wait for the update to finish.

Application Notes 5

After about 45 seconds a web page will appear indicating that the update is finished.

7. Click the Return to Web Client button to return to the Basler Web Surveillance Client.

If you have updated a firmware version 3.7 or before using the FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin file, you now need to repeat this procedure starting from step 1 to perform the actual firmware update. This time you have to select the FW-x.x.x.bin firmware update file in step 4.

If your browser times out during the update process, press the Ctrl and F5 keys (at the same time) to refresh the browser.

If you accidentally close the browser during the firmware update, wait several minutes and then reopen the browser. The update will be performed even with the browser closed.

Updating Firmware Using the BIP Finder Software

If you are using version 1.7 or higher of the BIP Finder software, you can use the BIP Finder to update the firmware in one or more cameras.

An advantage of the BIP Finder software is that it can be used to simultaneously update the firmware in multiple cameras. Keep in mind that if you are updating multiple cameras, they all must have "BIP2" as part of the model name (e.g., BIP2-1300c-dn).

If user management is enabled on the cameras you are updating, consider using the "default user name and password" feature in the BIP Finder. Any time the BIP Finder accesses a camera to do a firmware update and discovers that user management is enabled, it will automatically try to use the default user name and password to access the camera. This can eliminate the need to enter the user name and password multiple times if you are attempting to upgrade the firmware on multiple cameras that have user management enabled. The help file included with the BIP Finder software includes instructions for setting a default user name and password for the BIP Finder.

In the example steps below, we will be updating two BIP2-1300c-dn cameras at the same time.

1. Make sure that the camera whose firmware you want to update is connected.

2. Open the BIP Finder Software.

3. Click the icon to switch to the list view if you are not in list view already.

4. Select the camera or cameras you want to update as shown below.

5. Click Camera > Update Firmware as shown below.

Application Notes 7

A Firmware Update Wizard window will open.

6. Use the Browse button to select the new firmware file that you want to load onto the camera and then click the Next button.

a. If you are updating firmware versions 3.8 or higher, choose the firmware update file.

b. If you are updating firmware versions 3.7 or before, choose the FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin file.

Note: If user management is enabled on the cameras and the BIP Finder cannot access a camera using its default user name and password, a Login window will open asking you to enter a user name and password for the camera that the BIP Finder is attempting to access. If you see this window, enter a valid admin level user name and password for the camera.

(If you are updating multiple cameras with user management enabled and the BIP Finder cannot use its default user name and password to access the cameras, you will see the Login window multiple times.)

7. A progress bar will appear as shown below.

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE CAMERA FROM POWER OR FROM THE NETWORK WHILE THE UPDATE IS IN PROGRESS. If you do disconnect power or the network connection during the update, the firmware update will fail, the camera will no longer operate, and the camera will not be repairable in the field.

8. When the updates are complete, a window will open displaying the status of the firmware update on each camera as shown below.

For any camera that was updated successfully, the result will indicate "Success".

If you see a "Firmware not supported" result for a camera, it means that the update was not successful. A "Firmware not supported" result typically means that you tried to update a camera using a firmware update file that was not the correct match for the camera model that you tried to update.

9. Click the Finish button and wait about 30 seconds to allow the cameras to finish rebooting.

If you have updated a firmware version 3.7 or before using the FW-FirmwareUpdateHelper_x.x.bin file, you now need to return to step 6 and repeat steps 5 to 8 to perform the actual firmware update using the FW-x.x.x.bin firmware update file.
