It is essential for planning, gathering, evaluating and analysing data gathered in scientific studies. Nowadays, we are aware of the importance that scientific investigation has in medicine and health profession. Therefore, it is essential for health professional to feel comfortable when analysing new information and that is the reason why biostatistics has a fundamental role on medical and health education. Powerful and sophisticated statistical techniques of planning and analysis of medical data in health care delivery have opened up new dimensions and capabilities in medical and health research. In this context, a health professional’s training, with the potentialities of applications of bio-statistical techniques to enable him/her to plan his/her research studies with scientifically and statistically valid designs and to arrive at valid and meaningful conclusions applying appropriate statistical methods. Objectives Understanding and using basic applications of biostatistics in the analysis of medical research data To have a clear understanding of the most commonly used statistical methods in data analysis, of their potentials and limitations To be able to assess when and how to apply these methods in real-life situations To improve skills in data presenta- tion, interpretation and communica- tion To perceive the importance of data collection and data quality Contents Introduction to Biostatistics Classical Methods of Data Analysis Biostatistical Methods: Survival Analysis and Causality Examination of Phase I, II and III clinical trials analysis Design of experiments for clinical trials Adaptive design Bayesian methods Data management Target Participants’ Profile Researchers, clinicians, doctors, public health professionals, medical investigators, from public and private institutions, and hospitals who wish to increase their familiarity with quantitative methods in the principles of biostatistics, and applied to health care planning and evaluation. PROGRAMME DIRECTOR Pulak Ghosh Quantitative Methods Professor Pulak Ghosh (Ph.D. Oakland University, USA) joined IIM Bangalore in 2009. Prior to joining IIM he was associated with the Department of Statistics at Georgia State University and Emory University in the USA. He was also the Director at Novartis Pharmaceuticals, USA. At IIM he has been teaching quantitative techniques in the Post Graduate Programme; research methodology, analytics, and applied multivariate analysis, Bayesian analysis in the Doctoral Programme. He also teaches in regularly in prestigious universi- ties like Cornell, Upenn etc. He also taught in executive development programmes for companies like Coca Cola, Bank of America & Reserve Bank of India. His research interests are varied but mainly in the realm of statistics and its applications to different fields of biostatistics, finance and marketing. He published papers in various national and international journals like Journal of the American Statisti- cal Association, Annals of Applied Statistics, and Statistics in Medicine etc. He visited and taught in various universities in the USA, Canada, UK, and Singapore. He is now the Editor of 5 international journals including Journal of the American Statisti- cal Association. Biostatistics is the application of statistics to the biological and medical field. It is essential for planning, gathering, evaluating and analysing data gathered in scientific studies.

Nowadays, we are aware of the importance that scientific investigation has in medicine and health profession. Therefore, it is essential for health professional to feel comfortable when analysing new information and that is the reason why biostatistics has a fundamental role on medical and health education. Powerful and sophisticated statistical techniques of planning and analysis of medical data in health care delivery have opened up new dimensions and capabilities in medical and health research.
