What We Do Biological Sciences Scholars

If interested, students most typically get involved in a research setting during their second or third year. Research may be animal or plant related, molecular or organismal, lab or field based, on or off campus, scientific or clinical. Exposure is the key ingredient; students can use this exposure and experience to build their resume, follow career paths, or apply to graduate/professional school. Participation in the Biological Sciences Scholars program will help to build connections with faculty and peers that can lead to these research experiences.

Undergraduate ResearchThe Biological Sciences Scholars Program is a four year program focusing on exposure to undergraduate research in the biological sciences during our students’ tenures at Ohio State. The “living-learning” arrangement that the Scholars enjoy allows the students to interact on both academic and social levels.

All Biological Sciences Scholars are studying in one of the majors offered in Biological Sciences or have a strong passion for the sciences while majoring in another subject area. Many of our students are considering careers in the health professions (Medical, Dental, Veterinary, Pharmacy, etc) research, teaching at the high school or college level, working with the government, or with conservation efforts. This is a four year program with different goals for student involvement for each year.

Contributing to the community at large is a goal of the Biological Sciences Scholars Program. Each year, students become involved in a variety of community organizations in order to learn more about themselves, engage with others, and to give back to the world around them. Past community service events have included Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-Family, animal adoption events with the Franklin County Dog Shelter, and the Mid-Ohio Food Bank to name a few.
