BIOS - The Importance of BIOS
BIOS is short for Basic Input/Output System, the built‐in software that determines what a computer
can do without accessing a program from a disk. It also manages data flow between the computer’s
operating system and attached devices, such as hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and
printer. BIOS is very different from common software. It’s similar to hardware. Introduction of BIOS
The BIOS is typically placed in a ROM chain that comes with the computer. This ensures that the
BIOS will always be available and not be damaged by disk failure. It also makes it possible for a
computer to boot itself.
The BIOS chain on the motherboard is the only labeled chain. The label can protect BIOS content
and cannot be damaged easily. In addition, the BIOS chain is rectangular or square on the
motherboard. BIOS primarily can save the following content: self‐checking program, system
bootstrap loading program and drives based on external devices.
Main Functions of PC BIOS
1. Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors exist before loading the operating
system.
2. BIOS driver. Low level drivers that give the computer basic operational control over the
computer’s hardware.
3. BIOS or CMOS set up. Configuration program that allows you to configure hardware
setting.
4. Self‐checking and initializing. This aspect is responsible to the start of computer,
including: checking hardware when plugging in., creating interrupt vector, setting
register, initializing and checking the external devices as well as guiding a program.
