Biophilic Design
Presentation by John Turner & Howard Bates
Who we are..
Close your eyes
What is Biophilia?
!“Biophilic Design is an innovative way of designing the places where we live, work, and learn. We need
nature in a deep and fundamental fashion, but we have often designed our cities and suburbs in ways that both degrade the environment and alienate us from nature.” !

Waterfalls, stepping stones, sunlight in a forest, being with pets, waves splashing on a beach, fresh mountain air…

• For almost 2000 years we followed Roman Engineer Vitruvius’ principles of working with nature to naturally ventilate and control solar gain
• Then the Industrial Revolution provided architects with the opportunity to work against nature and the skyscraper was born, and air conditioning controlled nature
• Bauhaus director Adolph Loos in ‘Ornament and Crime’ stated that all superfluous decoration was offensive and criminal, the fluid human frame was doomed to inhabit rectilinear forms
• For almost 100 years Modernism has worked to minimise our connection with nature
• Over the last 30 years, Eco and Sustainable architecture has worked to restore that link
• However today most architects and interior designers are still more concerned with how a building or space
looks, rather than how it feels for the end users.

‘Architecture is really about well-being. I think that people want to feel good in a space ... On the one hand it's about shelter, but it's also about
pleasure.’

Mental restoration (concentration/alertness)
Emotional restoration (stress, lifestyle pressures)
Physical restoration (relaxation)
1. Visual connection with nature (view to nature)
8. Biomorphic forms & patterns (natural imagery)
2. Non-visual connection with nature (multisensory connection)
9. Material connection with nature (creating sense of place)
3. Non-rhythmic sensory stimuli (ephemeral connections)
10. Complexity & order (rich sensory information found in nature)
4. Thermal & airflow variability (mimicking natural environment)
11. Prospect (view over a distance)
5. Presence of water (seeing/hearing/touching water)
12. Refuge (protection from surroundings)
6. Dynamic & diffuse light (mimicking natural environment)
13. Mystery (partially obscured views etc.)
7. Connection with natural systems (seasonal/temporal changes)
14. Risk/Peril (coupled with a reliable safeguard)

‘Trying to tick/check all 14 patterns is definitely overkill and counterproductive. It becomes a
collage with no central purpose or focus.’

MATERIAL CONNECTIONS TO NATURE
Patterns/textures/colours inspired by nature, organic forms, including light, temperature & airflow that mimics
nature
PROSPECT Views or proximity to nature, water features, plants
NON-VISUAL CONNECTIONS TO NATURE
A variety of sensory connections to nature, e.g. acoustics

Friendlier spaces
Less absenteeism/presenteeism
Less environmental
stress
Better focus & productivity
Sensing spaces – We inhabit a visually dominated society, and rarely navigate spaces using smells, touch, sounds & taste
• mint, pine, lavender, jasmine, eucalyptus
• Natural air flows
• Soothing music, making breeze audible
• Running water and fountains relax

So if Biophilia is good for us, why don’t we do more of it?
We landscape externally, but interior landscaping like ‘art’ is one of the first items to be ‘value engineered’ !
