GETTING TO THE HEART OF WOMEN!S HEALTH

(NaturalNews) Cardiovascular Disease has long been thought of as a man!s disease while in reality it is the leading cause of death among women today. This year 435,000 women in America will have heart attacks with over half of them resulting in death. 8 million women in the U.S. are currently living with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and an astounding 35% of the female population will die from this disease. So why is it that you aren!t hearing more about this?

The simple fact of the matter is that men have long been the test subjects in CVD related studies. The data that we currently rely upon to help diagnose and treat CVD is based primarily on male physiology. However recently it has come to the attention of researchers that symptoms of CVD show up differently in women and men and that the risk factors vary between genders.

The male and female bodies are governed by two separate, yet equally important sets of sex hormones. While the presence of the female and male sex hormones can be found in both genders, testosterone is present at higher levels in men while women have higher levels of estrogen, and it is the estrogen that makes all of the difference in the CVD equation.

While researchers don!t yet know the cause, it appears that estrogen has a cardioprotective effect during the fertile years of a woman!s life. It is during those years that estrogen is plentiful in the body and plays an important role in the monthly menstrual cycle. However, as a woman enters the menopausal phase of her life, estrogen levels drop severely. When comparing the age related data for men and women side by side, it is not surprising that women tend to develop CVD an average of 10 years later than men. The theory behind this is the loss of estrogen that occurs at menopause.

Spurred by this theory, a wide scale clinical study called “The Women!s Health Initiative” began in 2002. Researchers believed that women taking synthetic hormones would find relief from the side effects of menopause while lowering their CVD risk. There was high hope that synthetic hormonal supplementation was the answer. However, the study was abruptly halted when the data suggested that, instead of protecting women from heart attacks and stroke, the synthetic hormones were actually increasing the subject!s risk of CVD as well as breast cancer. Since the findings were publicly released, synthetic hormone replacement therapy has been under intense scrutiny. A safe alternative to these synthetic hormones are biologically identical hormones. In the proper doses, they can provide relief from menopausal symptoms as well lower your CVD risk.

Likewise, eating fish once a week can lower your CVD risk factor thanks to its high content of Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). EFAs are the good fats that your body requires in order to prevent or correct inflammation in the body. The American Heart Society stands behind this claim and encourages everyone to indulge in a little fish now and then. Because of the mercury contamination in our nation!s waterways, supplementing with fish oil can provide the same heart healthy benefits without the risk of dangerous heavy metals. Essential fatty acids – what they are, why we need them

By now, you have probably heard about something called essential fatty acids or EFAs. These are nutrients that our bodies need in order to stay healthy. While we are able to produce many nutrients on our own (think vitamin D and sunlight), for some reason, Mother Nature decided to let us get our EFAs from our diets. Actually, for many centuries, this was no problem, as many foods contained nice amounts of these healthy nutrients, which have been linked to improving literally dozens of health issues like cancer and heart disease.

Unfortunately, time and our quest for convenience have changed all of that. As we have grown to rely more on processed foods, our levels of EFAs have been steadily falling. As a result, many nutritionists now believe that the vast majority of us are sorely lacking in EFAs.

(NaturalNews) Borage and flaxseed oil appear to act internally to improve skin health, according to a study conducted by researchers from Laboratoire Oenobiol in France and Heinrich-Heine University and the University of Witten-Herdecke in Germany, and published in the Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers assigned 45 healthy, non-smoking women to receive a daily supplement consisting of 2.2 grams of either borage oil, flaxseed oil, or a medium-chain fatty acid placebo. The researchers regularly induced skin irritation (inflammation and reddening) in every woman by means of topically applied nicotinate. All participants were between the ages of 18 and 65.

Women who had been taking borage oil for several weeks were found to experience 35 percent less skin reddening than they had at the beginning of the study, while those taking flaxseed oil experienced 45 percent less. There was no change in the degree of reddening experienced by the placebo group. Women receiving borage or flaxseed oil also exhibited lessened blood flow to the skin in response to irritation.

After six weeks, those taking either oil supplement experienced a 10 percent decrease in water loss through the skin, and another six weeks showed even further improvement among the flaxseed group. Both groups showed significant decreases in skin roughness and scaling after 12 weeks, while no change was observed in the placebo group.

Borage oil consists of large amounts of the omega-6 fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid (LA), and the monounsaturated fat oleic acid. Flaxseed oil consists mostly of the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), along with smaller quantities of omega-6 fatty acids and oleic acid. Blood levels of GLA were observed to increase in the borage oil group after six and 12 weeks, as were ALA levels among the flaxseed group.

The current study was not designed to uncover the specific mechanism by which the oils improve skin health.
