NEC Biometric Application Framework is a multi-service, robust, scalable, extensible, biometric-based middleware platform that has the potential to support multi-modal capabilities and a wide-range of services to empower customer to improve and enhance their security and investigation offering by leveraging the benefits of biometric information.

NEC Biometric Application Framework serves as a centralized repository of all biometric information such as Photography, Fingerprint, Facial, IRIS, and others.

NEC Biometric Application Framework embraces the concept of being a borderless system and knock-down the needs of physical barriers. It will empower Government to conduct real-time centralized screening, verification and enrolment anytime, anywhere via wireless technology like General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and wireless fidelity (WIFI) connectivity.

This Application Architecture consists of 3 architectural layers, namely the Biometrics Service Integration Layer, Biometrics Service Implementation Layer and Biometrics Infrastructure Layer.

Biometrics Service Integration Layer

Biometrics Service Integration Layer is the technical infrastructure that connects the stakeholder application systems (i.e. Biometric Passport Registration and Enrolment; National ID Card; Automatic Border Control; Biometric Mobile Screening; Biometric Access Control) with the reusable services provided by the Biometrics Service Implementation Layer. This layer will have the impact on any proposed systems with regards to the following areas: standards, flexibility, interoperability, performance, security and capacity management.

Biometrics Service Implementation Layer

All biometrics services are implemented and managed in this layer by leveraging on both the Biometrics Infrastructure Layer and the common supporting services within this layer. Any proposed systems can access to a broad range of biometrics services, such as fingerprint identification, facial verification and retrieval of history photo images, to various stakeholder application systems that require such services, regardless if these application systems have their own biometrics-based identity resources. Domain management enables the proposed system to manage all biometrics from all identity resources and provide the required biometrics services to all the requesting domains securely and efficiently.

Biometrics Infrastructure Layer

Biometrics Infrastructure Layer facilitates the biometrics infrastructure for any proposed systems by providing the unified biometrics repositories and the highly scalable biometrics matching system. The unified biometrics repositories are used to host various types of biometrics from various biometrics identity resources. For the ease of system integration, the services are exposed to the external systems via the most commonly used interfaces such as Web Services, Messaging and Secured File Transfer Protocol (SFTP is usually used for batch interface).
