Bioenergy results from converting

biomass into useful forms of energy,

most commonly by burning wood to

gain heat. By using renewable forms of

energy from local sources, it is possible

to reduce the dependence on fossil

fuels, protect industries from electricity

shortage and reduce carbon emissions

at the same time.

Increasing need for environmentally

friendly fuel

The private market as well as the market

for large-scale power stations is growing

rapidly. This is mainly a consequence of

the Kyoto Protocol, which covers more

than 160 countries, representing over 55%

of the global greenhouse gas emissions.

Leading market share

ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL is a major

player in supplying and supporting wood

pellet producers all over the world and

holds a share of more than 50% of the

Raw material sources from:• Timber industry• Sawmills• Paper industry• Furniture industry• Building industry• Agricultural by-products

Scopes of application • Wood pellets• Wood powder• Other biomass pellets

Advantages of pelleting• Reduced transport costs• Simple handling• CO2 neutral fuel• Homogeneous and manageable fuel• Environmental

biomass fuel market as well as the wood

grinding market, which supplies wood

powder to power stations. The amount of

CO2 neutral fuel produced on equipment

from ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL replaces

almost three million tons of oil and gas per

year.

Key processing machinery

ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL designs

solutions based on highly advanced key

machinery for wood grinding and pelleting,

inclusive of chippers and dryers for the

processing of wet and/or green wood prior

to the pelleting process. Compression by

means of biomass pelleting provides a

substantial density increase. By converting

wood chips into compressed wood

pellets, the increase in density typically

corresponds to a rise from 150 kg/m3 to

650 kg/cm3, which generates significant

transport, storage and handling savings

as well as various other environmental

advantages.

DryingRaw material: SawdustThe drum drying system dries the raw material before the fine-grinding process. To ensure an evenly dried product, the raw material is conveyed pneumatically by a stream of hot gases and dried in a convective process until reaching an amount of residual moisture of approx. 10%.

Fine-grinding It is recommended to grind raw materials in a hammer mill to achieve homogeneous pellets. The large surface and open fibres of ground products facilitate the steam absorption in the cascade mixer. Steam and high temperature in the cascade mixer soften the lignin in the wood, after which the pelleting can take place without addition of binders. The Multimill hammer mill works with an airflow that optimizes the grinding process and carries the wood meal on to the separation in a cyclone or a filter.

PelletingThe pellet mill ensures a high output and an efficient control of the pellet quality. The pellet mill is dimensioned for large forces and provided with exchangeable wear parts. The efficient process control ensures high flexibility and optimum energy utilization. The energy consumed to operate the pellet mill and heat the steam corresponds to 2.5-3% of the wood energy content.

ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL offers two types of biomass pellet mills:

Pre-grinding size reduction Raw material: Wood chipsRaw material supplied as wooden chips in sizes of approx. 100+ mm requires a size reduction in a chipper and a hammer mill prior to the subsequent drying process. The Optimill hammer mill is intended for high-capacity and optimum particle size distribution by means of an energy-efficient rotor design and replaceable wear liners in the grinding chamber.

Pellet mill PM30Sturdy PM30 pellet mill with highly efficient double-reduction gearbox for optimum die speed. High-speed belt drive and heavy-duty pellet chamber for optimum and safe production.

Pellet mill LM26Strong LM26 pellet mill with highly efficient and reliable single-belt drive. Resilient V-belt drive for protection against severe shock loads. The flywheel effect of the mill sheave dampens pelleting surges.

CoolingCooler for wood pellets prior to packing and storage. The friction generated in the die during the pelleting process develops additional heat in the pellets, which has to be removed before sifting and storing the pellets. The pellets are cooled by air taken from the surrounding area, and therefore the pellet temperature will always be 5-10° C above room temperature. The cooler retention time and the wood pellet diameter are decisive for the cooler dimensioning.

Air cleaning filterEFF filter for efficient dust separation at low working costs, including advanced cleaning nozzle with optimum flow and unmatched low energy consumption for compressed air cleaning of filter bags.

Final siftingFinally the pellets pass a sifter for removal of crumbles and dust, which are reused in the process.

Process control ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL offers modularly designed computerized controls for individual key machines, complete processing channels and complete plant controls.

The one-stop-shop concept

ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL is a

unique company with the ability to

manufacture and supply each and

every key-processing machine in

the pellet production line. With an

extensive knowledge of each key

process, we are able to provide a

compatible and homogeneous solution

from start to finish.

Our concept is simple and effective.

We strive to be a “one-stop” all-round

supplier for all pelleting needs. Our

packages are customized to suit

specific requirements, whether it be

know-how, engineering, individual

machines, complete processing lines

or spare parts and service.

Efficient pellet production

The production of wood pellets

is influenced by various

physical properties, such as

moisture content, particle size

distribution, bulk density and

operating parameters, including

die shape specifications,

operating temperature and power

requirements.

Wear-resistant and environmentally

friendly equipment

All conveyors and processing

equipment are made of corrosion-

resistant steel to withstand the tannic

acid liberated from heated wood, etc.

The process line is working at under-

pressure to minimize dust escape and

improve the working environment.

The biomass equipment from

ANDRITZ FEED & BIOFUEL has been

adapted to the functions and strength

especially required for biomass

products. With the combination of

quality machinery, process know-how

and general experience in the project

supply, we offer optimum solutions

for any kind of biomass grinding and

pelleting.
