Doosan Babcock Biomass

Coal-to-biomass fuel conversions give you access to efficient power generation and lower emissions. Doosan Babcock has decades of experience in developing 100% biomass and biomass co-firing combustion systems, with large-scale references across Europe and North America.

Breathing new life into your plant

Optimum asset utilisation

Coal has fuelled power generation for over 100 years, but the need to tackle climate change is challenging its future viability. As a result, existing coal plants are at risk of closure despite having significant design life left, which is subsequently leaving utilities with stranded assets and putting considerable pressure on reserve capacity margins.

Doosan Babcock’s biomass conversions allow you to continue to utilise these assets, avoiding the need to build new plant or close coal plants which may have only used a fraction of their design life, while at the same time offering low-cost CO2 neutral power generation.

Flexible coal-to-biomass conversion solutions

• Attractive economics as the capital outlay for the existing plant is often fully or partially depreciated.

• Opportunity to bring plant to modern standards and renew time-expired components with modern equivalents and increase plant performance with modern high efficient turbine components. • Bespoke technologies designed to meet each plant’s needs.

• Opportunity to meet future NOx and SOx compliance with lower capital expenditure due to the low nitrogen content and lack of sulphur in biomass fuels.

• Conversion technologies focus on boiler plant, PF and CFB combustion; steam turbines, from simple refurbishment to full steam path retrofit; and life-time extension to match the plant future.

• Wood from sustainable sources is clean, renewable and carbon neutral.

Typical conversion scope • Upgrade of the fuel handling system for biomass is required including fire and explosion suppression.

• Existing vertical spindle mills may be modified or replaced with new vertical spindle or hammer mills as appropriate.

• Reduction of mill inlet temperature is required due to lower ignition temperature of wood. Additional heat can be recovered to minimise impact on efficiency.

• Existing burners may need to be modified due to larger particle size of pulverised wood, or alternatively a new low NOx biomass combustion system can be provided.

• Additional primary or secondary NOx control technologies such as OFA, BOFA or SNCR may be required to meet emissions compliance.

• Bottom ash systems may need replacing with a dry bottom ash conveyer.

• Primary air fans may require upgrading due to higher pressure drop associated with transportation of biomass.

• Modifications of heat transfer surfaces such as the superheater or economiser may be required, dependent on boiler design.

• Additional water lances or soot blowers may need to be installed to control ash coatings on heating surfaces.

• Efficiency improvement measures such as flue gas cooler or turbine upgrades can be utilised to maximise efficiency.

Doosan Babcock Biomass

Our burner technologiesDoosan Babcock is a trusted partner for the delivery of reliable and efficient steam production, bringing together over a century of experience in burner design to provide combustion technologies that maximise the performance of your plant.

Doosan Babcock‘s 70MWth Clean Combustion Test Facility is the world’s largest burner test facility, designed for the development of combustion systems. In 2013, the facility was upgraded to enable the firing of wood pellets. Operated to the highest environmental standards, our test facility is capable of testing full scale burners up to 70 MWth and firing a wide range of coals from anthracite, bituminous and sub-bituminous to pre-dried lignite and biomass fuels.

Optimum asset utilisation

Doosan Babcock‘s biomass burner builds on our Mark III burner technology, utilising the widely proven air register design in conjunction with an optimised fuel cartridge, specifically designed for biomass fuels.

Doosan Babcock has developed a low NOx biomass burner that efficiently fires both white and black pellets.

Our 2nd generation low NOx biomass burner showed a consistent 45-50% NOx reduction over our 1st generation biomass burner across a typical range of operating stoichiometries.

We supply and install new combustion systems and controls, make all the necessary modifications to boiler pressure parts and tubes, and address impacts in auxiliary systems.
