Rigorous training in biological theories, biomedical procedures and environmental studies are the hallmarks of our Biology program. Core courses include: biostatistics, botany, cell biology, ecology, epidemiology, genetics, and microbiology. With electives like immunology, animal behavior, herpetology, ichthyology, ornithology, mammalogy, and organic evolution, students can easily sample all aspects of the biological sciences, or specialize in one narrow area. Students also take courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and mathematics. Graduates from this program move on to medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, graduate school, advanced veterinary training, and into government and industry. Graduates of Medaille’s associate degree in Veterinary Technology may transfer into the Biology degree program without loss of any credits. Epidemiology: the study of health and illness Herpetology: the scientific study of reptiles and amphibians Immunology: a biomedical science studying the immune system of animals (including people) Ichthyology: the scientific study of fish Mammalogy: the scientific study of mammals (warm-blooded animals) Ornithology: the scientific study of birds CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Botanist Chemist Dentist Ecologist Environmental Scientist Medical Doctor Neuroscientist Pharmacist Physicist Psychologist Veterinarian BIO 423 ORNITHOLOGY This course is an exploration of the taxonomy and biological characteristics of birds, including their anatomy and physiology, life history, ecology and distribution. The relationship of avians to man will be examined. The laboratory will include identification of native and exotic species, surface and internal anatomy, and field trips to examine specimens in their natural and/or captive environments. Special emphasis is placed on the identification and life history of native New York fauna. Field trips may require time outside of normally scheduled class and/or lab. life sciences club ecosystems • anatomy biochemistry organic chemistry Erlenmeyer flasks microbiology genetics developmental biology scientific method microscopes anatomy Biology 18 Agassiz Circle Buffalo, NY 14214 (716) 880-2200 www.medaille.edu biology.indd 1 11/18/09 3:17:26 PM
