Leprosy, what does it mean?
(Sample of person with leprosy
Leprosy or Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae for short) is a disease caused by a rod-
shaped bacillus called. It affects mainly the skin and the nerves.
What is the first symptoms of leprosy or M. leprae?
The first sign of leprosy or M. leprae is usually the appearance of patches on the skin.
It can be on the arms or face. These patches are accompanied by a loss of sensation in the
areas affected.
Is a leper person can be treated? Where is the treatment available?
Yes, infected person can be cured with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT). It is a
combination of at least two of thefollowingdrugs:
Rifampicin, Clofazimine, Dapsone, Ofloxacin and Minocycline. MDT is taken for one
dose (for single-lesion leprosy), six months (for the mild type or PB leprosy), or one year (for
the severe or MB type). MDT is available FREE in health centers all over the country.
He/She can be diagnosed and treated at the nearest health center or health post as leprosy
services have been integrated with general health services.
What can we do to eliminate stigma and discrimination against people affected by leprosy?
For a start, we should never define them by their disease or use derogatory terms
such as leper. Let us call them buy their name. Another thing that we can do is that, let us
offer them and their families our support, accept them as who they are and treat them
with the same as anyone else. Remember, Every person is born free and equal in dignity and

human rights. (Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
How will I get leprosy?
Leprosy can be transmitted through the air via droplets from the nose and the mouth
during close and frequent contact with untreated persons with leprosy.
Can we eliminate leprosy?
Well, the elimination strategy is based on detecting and treating all cases of leprosy
using MDT and thereby reducing the disease burden to a very low level. The key will be to
ensure that all new cases of leprosy will continue to have access or take MDT services.
How can we say that the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem is feasible?
Leprosy or M. Leprae is one of the few infectious diseases to meet the strict criteria
for elimination:
y There is a cure named Multi-Drug therapy (MDT).y Leprosy can be determined on clinical signs alone. Practical and simple diagnostic
tools are available.
y The untreated, infected human beings are the only one source of infection.
Why do we aim for elimination and not on eradication?
For when we say eradication, we would mean the complete absence of the disease
and the organism that causes it throughout the world. At present, we lack the tools both
to protect people from developing leprosy and to diagnose and treat the disease in its sub-
clinical form. As a first step, there is a significant resource to be required in order to
develop and deploy the necessary tools, and hence, it was decided to aim at elimination of
the disease as a public health problem rather than eradication.
What are the most important messages about leprosy for the community?
Below are examples of messages about leprosy:
y Leprosy is like any other diseases that caused by a germ.

y Leprosy can be determined from clinical signs alone. A pale or reddish skin patch thatlacks sensation is a sign of this disease.
y Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) kills germs and stops the spread of leprosy after the firstdose. Patients on treatment do not spread leprosy. MDT is available and free of
charge at all health centers and facilities.
y If there is an early and regular treatment, it can prevent deformities in your body.y Leper patients who completed their treatment even if they have disabilities or
residual, skin patches we can say that they are already been cured.
y Leper patient can lead completely normal lives, before, during and after theirtreatment.
