> PURSUIT OF JUSTICE Few come as well prepared as Alan Zaunbrecher to be our next district court judge. The depth of his stellar legal education, combined with his breadth of legal experience, is unmatched. Alan brings to the bench 33 years experience in federal courtrooms and 35 of the 41 state courts litigating more than 200 civil trials. He has served as a special assistant attorney general for the State of Louisiana and admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Some call him a referee. Some call him umpire. Yet others call him special master. Regardless of the title, they all refer to his keen ability to be objective, firm and fair. For the past ten years and more than 1,000 cases later, Alan has been a professionally certified mediator in complex litigation. My experience in this arena has made me a better attorney, and I know it will make me a better judge. Respected by his peers, he was elected president of the Greater Covington Bar Association and was one of nine attorneys in the state to receive the prestigious 2012 Pro Bono Publico Award from the Louisiana State Bar Association for his volunteer legal services to the poor. He’s been a guest educator demonstrating trial techniques for Tulane and Loyola trial advocacy programs and continuing education seminars lecturing on insurance coverage, evidence, mediation and negotiations, all with the mantra of “justice delayed is justice denied.” Alan has handled an incredible variety of legal matters. He has represented companies and individuals and been appointed “special master” to hear evidence and rule on cases. With a soft-spoken, yet commanding presence, Alan Zaunbrecher leaves you with an indelible impression – competent, decisive and fair. Alan Zaunbrecher for Judge, 22nd JDC P.O. > TRUSTED HUMANITARIAN> DRIVEN AND DETERMINEDHaving made their home on the northshore in 1983, Alan and Sue and their three children ingrained themselves in their state, community and church. Governor Mike Foster appointed Alan to serve on the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, also known as the Superdome Commission. As chairman, he proudly oversaw the building of $200 million in construction projects; namely, the N.O. Arena, Alario Center, and Zepher Field, among others. Never letting go of his love for sports and developing our youth, Alan has officiated high school, college and state final four basketball games for 12 years and served on the Super Bowl XXXI Host Committee and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. The Covington Bar Association, with Alan as its president, awarded a $10,000 grant to provide direct financial support to local armed service members suffering a life-changing injury in Iraq or Afghanistan, increased pro bono cases by 60 percent, co-chaired the Bench, Bar and

Badge Build that brings judges, lawyers and law enforcement together for a month of building for Habitat for Humanity and provided direct financial support for the 22nd district court’s drug court. Alan, now nearly two years into his term, is proud of his service on the President’s Council of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “For the first time in St. Tammany Parish, we have a one-stop cancer center for testing, diagnosis and treatment. It is modern, cutting-edge technology treating everyone regardless of their ability to pay.”

Alan has had an impact on everything from our economy and environment to our youth and to people in need. He grew up and remains of catholic faith and is very active in St. Peters Catholic Church and Tchefuncte Bible Study. He enjoys bow hunting and is an avid gardener and conservationist.

Born in Rayne, LA in 1954, Alan Zaunbrecher is the fourth of six children. His father, Richard, was a superintendent for Columbia Gulf Transmission Co. and his mother, Verna, a homemaker. Alan’s formative years were divided between southwest Rayne and Franklin, Louisiana and Middle Tennessee while his father worked along the gas pipeline. Alan was a standout student, multi-sport athlete and leader in high school. He was president of the student council, participated in football, basketball, track, and Boys State, and was an outstanding graduate in 1972. Few of his mother’s or father’s family had finished high school. None had finished college. Thus, his parents instilled in him a God-fearing, educated, and hard-working ethic. As he recalls, “I was

not rewarded but expected to make As.” As a child, he worked in his grandparent’s country grocery. As a teenager, Alan spent his summers working in the Tennessee tobacco fields for 75 cents an hour.

Had it not been for a football scholarship, Alan’s dream of attending Tulane would have been just that. He didn’t take his good fortune lightly. He worked the graveyard shift on the New Orleans docks and then attended class that was followed by football practice. A football injury ended his playing career but not his love for the game. Alan became a graduate assistant football coach for three years while attending Tulane Law School. While at Tulane, Alan caught the eye of and married the lovely and studious Sue Lynch. While Sue studied for her MBA in Chicago, Alan graduated from Tulane Law School and reached the pinnacle in legal education with a Master of Laws, with distinction, in 1992.

ON THE COURT OR IN COURT PROCEEDINGS, ALAN ZAUNBRECHER HAS BEEN PRESIDING, MAKING OBJECTIVE DECISIONS AND ENFORCING RULES FOR YEARS. ALAN ZAUNBRECHER IS POISED TO PRESIDE AS YOUR NEXT DISTRICT COURT JUDGE. “I’ve known Alan for over 40 years. He has the

education, training and experience to be an outstanding district judge for the people of Washington and St. Tammany Parishes. I can think of no one more qualified than Alan Zaunbrecher.”

— Former Gov. Mike Foster
