Biographical Summary

Dr Hilmi Mukhtar received his B.Eng in Chemical Engineering from University of Wales Swansea, United Kingdom in 1990. He then continued his MSc and PhD at the same university and completed his studies in 1991 and 1995, respectively. He has vast experience in teaching, research, consultancy and administration. He is currently serving as the Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.

In administration, he is recently holding the post of Dean of Faculty of Engineering. Previously, he was holding the Director of Transformation Office from April 2011 to April 2016 and was the Director of Undergraduate Studies from April 2006 to March 2011. From 2003 to 2006, he had held the position as Head of Chemical Engineering. Prior to this, he was the Deputy Dean II, who was in charged with undergraduate distance learning program at the School of Chemical Engineering Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) from 1996 to 2001. In research, he has been participating in many research projects funded by Ministry of Science, Ministry of Innovation Malaysia (MOSTI), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Petroleum Research Fund (PRF) and University Internal Research Fund. His research interest is in the membrane technology which includes development, modeling and application for separation processes in gas and liquid systems. He has graduated 18 postgraduate students, and many more ongoing candidature. He has published more than 150 papers in journals, seminars, conference proceedings and bulletins at the national and international levels. In consultancy, he has the expertise in designing teaching and research laboratories as well as equipment. Currently, he is also the Malaysian Qualification Agency panel for accreditation of national academic programs. He has served as external thesis examiners at Master and Doctor of Philosophy levels for Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He was been appointed as the External Program Examiner for Gas Engineering Degree Program, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), from June 2010-May 2011. He has served as reviewer for number of international journals including the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering (CJChE), Journal of Physical & Chemical News, International Scientific, Journal of Separation Science and Technology, The Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering, Macromolecular Research, Journal of Natural Gas Science and Eng, Journal of Industrial and Eng. Chemistry, Journal of Materials Sciences and Applications and Journal of Membrane Science. In addition, he is also served as the research project evaluator for Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF). He holds the Fellow of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and Charted Engineer (CEng), United Kingdom.
