STATEMENT OF RESEARCH AND TEACHING INTERESTS

Research

I propose to continue developing my research on several aspects of QCD

theory. My current and future theoretical results will be also directly relevant

for phenomenological applications and experiments performed at Jefferson

Laboratory as well as at other, both existing and planned, facilities world-

wide: HERA (Hermes), Brookhaven National Laboratory, Large Hadron

Collider at CERN (Alice), GSI (PANDA and PAX), Laboratori Nazionali

di Frascati (Daφne II).

The most striking feature of QCD, that singles out the strong interactions

from the other known interactions, is that it exhibits two limits: the short

distance regime where, because of the property of asymptotic freedom, the

coupling is small and quarks and gluons interact perturbatively (Perturbative

QCD, PQCD), and the long distance regime where the coupling becomes

strong, and quarks and gluons are bound into hadrons. Although the two

regimes are studied within completely different theoretical methods, new

interesting avenues were recently proposed that by addressing the problem of

the correspondence between the weak and strong couplings, purport to bridge

the gap in our understanding of the strong interactions. In this context,

an attractive possibility is given by the extension of AdS/CFT to QCD.

“Bottom up” approaches are currently being developed according to which

starting from QCD one envisions its five-dimensional holographic dual. An

important requirement for such approaches is that on one side results are cast

in a form that allows for reasonable comparisons with QCD phenomenology,

namely in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS), hadronic spectra, etc..., and on

the other, that predictions for some of the puzzles in the strong regime of

QCD are given.

The main themes of my research deal with two of such puzzles namely

parton-hadron duality, and the connection between high energy inclusive and

exclusive experiments.

Parton-hadron duality is the similarity between the cross section for a

hard process calculated in terms of its probe-parton scattering subprocess,

and the measured hadronic cross section averaged over a given kinematical

variable that characterizes the process, such as Bjorken x or the energy.

As the invariant mass produced in the hard process decreases, one observes

that the DIS, partonic type prediction seems to interpolate smoothly the

resonance structure of the cross section. In other words, duality reflects the

ability of describing a hadronic process, although in average, in terms of

partonic degrees of freedom only. Parton-hadron duality was first observed

by Bloom and Gilman in 1970. The onset of this phenomenon is, however,

i

Page 20: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - SIMONETTA LIUTI i. Professional …galileo.phys.virginia.edu/~sl4y/bionew.pdf · 2007-03-16 · BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - SIMONETTA LIUTI i. Professional Preparation

still presenting many unexplained and rather mysterious aspects. As written

recently by M. Shifman: “In spite of the dramatic developments of QCD

... the notion of parton-hadron duality remain(s) vague ... with the basic

questions unanswered”.

In my work I focus on interpreting experimental evidence that is sugges-

tive of a possible failure of standard PQCD approaches in the large Bjorken

x region. In particular, from the analysis of recent inclusive electron scat-

tering data a discrepancy unravels between the curve from the perturbative

regime and the resonances interpolation, that I singled out as a violation

of the parton-hadron correspondence. The latter can be further interpreted

as a signature that we are entering a semi-hard phase of QCD, where pre-

confinement effects might arise. The analysis of “duality violations” was ap-

plied to both the unpolarized and polarized inclusive measurements of proton

structure functions where a sufficiently large and accurate set of data in the

resonance region are available. In future work similar techniques will be ex-

tended to a number of different processes, e+e− annihilation into hadrons in

the Daφne II regime, hadron-hadron collisions, semi-leptonic decays of the τ

lepton, and of heavy quarks, in order to explore the question of universality

of such a phenomenon.

I have been also intrigued by the possibility of studying the exclusive-

inclusive connection using Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). GPDs

were developed in the past few years as a new tool to include essential in-

formation provided by exclusive processes in the description of some key

“missing pieces” of the structure of hadrons, namely the distribution of par-

tons in the transverse plane with respect to the hadron’s motion, and the

quarks and gluon orbital angular momentum’s contribution to the total spin

of the proton. An even more recent promising aspect of GPDs is in the

insight they might provide on hadronic structure in three dimensions, at

variance with the one dimension mapped out in DIS. Most studies have cur-

rently focused on the partons’ joint impact parameter, b, and momentum

fraction, x, distribution, describing the x-dependent distribution of partons

at a given transverse distance from the proton’s center of momentum, and

directly related to the Fourier transform of GPDs at zero longitudinal mo-

mentum transfer. The achievement of full 3D images of the nucleon will

require in addition the usage of the Wigner distribution, or quantum-phase

space distribution, an object whose extension to relativistic quarks and glu-

ons is currently under study. Since the processes measuring the nucleons’

GPDs are quite elusive from the experimental point of view, I suggested ob-

servables related to hadrons propagating in the nuclear medium. Nuclear

filtering effects as well as nuclear medium modifications can in fact provide

extra constraints on both the transverse size of hadrons, and on GPDs in

impact parameter space. Another developing field where I will utilize the

ii

Page 21: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - SIMONETTA LIUTI i. Professional …galileo.phys.virginia.edu/~sl4y/bionew.pdf · 2007-03-16 · BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - SIMONETTA LIUTI i. Professional Preparation

important new insight on hadronic structure in coordinate space provided by

our approach to GPDs will be the study of particle emission source sizes in

hadron-hadron scattering, including relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Finally, all of the efforts outlined above require knowledge of multi-

variable functions, from the simplest Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs)

that need to be mapped in Bjorken x and momentum transfer, Q2, to

the highly more complicated Wigner distributions. An interdisciplinary re-

search group at the University of Virginia including besides myself collabo-

rators from the Computer Science Department and from the Mechanical and

Aerospace Engineering Department, was in fact formed to develop calcula-

tional strategies to address this type of problems with “semi-automated”, or

“dynamically-data-driven” computing techniques. We have successfully car-

ried through the first stage of our project aimed at devising a parametriza-

tion of PDFs based on a specific Neural Network (NN) algorithm, the Self-

Organizing Map (SOM). The advantage of SOMs with respect to NN tech-

niques recently introduced to parametrize PDFs, is that they are designed

to single out possible sources of systematic errors, or of theoretical bias, that

might affect the final result. A paper on the subject is in preparation.

Funding

My research is currently funded by two separate grants listed in my CV. The

NSF grant is specific to the computer science/physics collaboration. The

DOE one is currently paying part of my salary. A tenure-track position

would allow me to utilize DOE funds for supporting students, as well as for

a research assistant.

Summary and Long Term Goal

My long term goal is to build/participate in a highly competitive hadronic

theory group that would both complement, and provide opportunities for in-

teraction with the intermediate energy experimental groups. I have already

shown some leadership in this context, with the support of my current DOE

grant. In fact, I succeeded in attracting to U.Va. several international col-

laborators, in starting from scratch a research theory group including besides

myself two post-docs and a few graduate students, in organizing a Subatomic

Journal Club aimed at graduate students, and, finally, in proposing and sub-

sequently concretely organizing the First Workshop on Parton-Hadron Du-

ality.

Teaching

All of my research efforts are complemented by teaching. As shown in

my CV, I have had some success in advising both undergraduate and grad-

uate students. In addition, I have taught a number of courses at different

undergraduate and graduate levels. In an era where physics research is suf-

fering from a lack of interest from the young generations, it is of the utmost

importance to reach out to them by communicating enthusiasm for our field,

and to provide them with guidance and role models in what I believe is one

of the top human endeavors. In my teaching I vigorously pursue these goals.
