Major Synergistic Activities:

(i) Currently serving as Chair of the Department of Biology at NEIU. During past five years, have spearheaded the implementation and refinement of a new undergraduate curriculum, developed an Essential Skills course for biology majors, increased usable space for faculty-student research by 40%, converted a room used for storage into a departmental computer lab, and thoroughly reviewed and updated all of our articulation agreements with community colleges.

(ii) Servied for two years as a member of the Executive Board for NEIU’s CCRAA grant-funded and newly-created Student Center for Science Education (SCSE). The board of the SCSE is funding faculty-student research activities and a visiting scholar program, is overseeing outreach activities with area community colleges, and is overseeing construction of a physical space to house the SCSE and the renovation of four teaching labs in the STEM disciplines.

(iii) Am serving as co-chair of the Environmental Science Working group, which includes members from the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Geography & Environmental Studies,

Mathematics and Physics, and is working on the development of an interdisciplinary Environmental Major at NEIU. We conducted surveys of institutions, agencies and employers in the region in order to determine how to structure the major in order to best prepare students for employment and graduate work, and to develop a regional network that will help sustain the major. Hosted an event (October 2009) in order to begin developing strong relationships with these regional institutions and agencies.

(iv) Have participated in NSF-funded SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Summer Institutes for the past two years. A group of faculty members from six departments at NEIU have attended these institutes as part of our efforts to develop the Environmental Science major (see above).
