T h e p r o p o r t i o n o f t h e s e p a t i e n t s t h a t m i g h t p r o g r e s s t oi n t e s t i n a l o b s t r u c t i o n o v e r t h e y e a r s i s i m p o s s i b l e t oa s s e s s a c c u r a t e l y , a l t h o u g h i t i s w e l l known t h a t t h ep r o p o r t i o n o f a l l c a s e s o f s m a l l b o w e l i n t e s t i n a l o b s t r u c -t i o n d u e t o a d h e s i o n s may b e a s h i g h a s 74% ( 4 ) .We h a v e d e m o n s t r a t e d t h a t , o v e r a 2 5 - y e a r p e r i o d , t h e

p r o p o r ti o n o f g e n e r a l s u r g i c a l , a d u l t a d m i s s i o n s d u e t oa d h e s i v e o b s t r u c t i o n w a s 0 . 9 % a n d t h a t 3 . 3 % o f a l ll a p a r o t o m i e s w e r e f o r a d h e s i o n s c a u s i n g o b s t r u c t i o n .B e v a n ( 5 ) h a s r e p o r t e d a n a p p r o x i m a t e f i g u r e o f 1 . 5 % o fa l l a d m i s s i o n s b e i n g f o r i n t e s t i n a l o b s t r u c t i o n f r o m a n yc a u s e , a l t h o u g h t h e n u m b e r d u e t o a d h e s i o n s i s n o ts t a t e d . T h e h i g hn u m b e r o f o b s t r u c t i o n s a f t e r a p p e n d i c e c t o m y m u s tr e f l e c t t h e f a c t t h a t t h i s i s a c o m m o n l y p e r f o r m e do p e r a t i o n a n d n o t t h a t a p p e n d i c e c t o m y i s p a r t i c u l a r l yp r o n e t o p r o d u c i n g o b s t r u c t i o n . S u r g e r y b e l o w t h et r a n s v e r s e m e s o c o l o n a c c o u n t s f o r t h e m a j o r i t y o f o p e r a -t i o n s s u b s e q u e n t l y p r o d u c i n g a d h e s i v e o b s t r u c t i o n .
